A lot of people still revere Castro within Cuba, more an external phenomena to condemn him...and in my recent visit to the beautiful country I was quite surprised to find a people full of life

Every evil figure has those who love them. That doesn't detract from their level of evil. The successful Cubans who fled from the communist takeover are no longer there to tell you how they feel, so naturally the people who stayed and agreed with him will like him.

I am certain Cuba didn't see the majority of their population flee so that metric is flawed to begin with

Castro inspired millions in Latin America to resist and considering he overthrew the US backed dictator on their own doorstep yet lived to 90, impressive. A big reason why he has inspired revolutions around the globe along with Che

I never said the majority fled. I said the successful ones did. So your metric is that the majority liked him, he must be good? Are you a Commie lad?

Majority rules, you should look it up - fundamental principle of democracies...but don't let it get in the way of your misguided WUM on a topic you clearly know little about

Majority likes it, must be good! * way of thinking. Mob rule is not a way to be governed. Give a voice to both sides.

I always thought Castro was worshipped in Cuba and many South American countries, for many reasons but a big one is he stood up to America.

The Cuban people are regarded as being very happy with their basic lifestyles. They have one of the best health care systems in the world.

It's a sad day for the world. He struggled to make a fair and just society in the face of Americans sanctions and many attempts on his life.

    R.I.P. Fidel Castro :shamrock:

love him or loathe him, you must agree he did free the Cuban people from one dictatorship which was a lot worse than what he put in place.
his testament was a 3rd world country that now has one of the best healthcare and education systems in the industrial world.
there has always been a sort of myth that he was a communist, he wasn't, he always described his cause as socialist. he went to bed with the Russians simply to gain help in his fight against the Batista government and the US military might.
a real david versus goliath story.

Poor country, isolated in no small way due to the US - more to blame than Castro, IMO. But as poor as they are, they have a rich culture and are a people full of life - it humbles me whenever I visit and love returning (Apart from the food)

The American Cubans would do well to remember that it was Socialism that saved them from the Great Depression before WWII when Roosevelt created the New Deal to create jobs for the poor by taxing the rich.

    Let the people sing.
Pre Castro, Batista seized power in a military coup & was a ruthless torturous dictator who having lived in the US was ultimately responsible for killing up to 20,000 people. For several years until 1959, the Batista government received financial, military, and logistical support from the United States.
At the beginning of 1959 United States companies owned about 40 percent of the Cuban sugar lands—almost all the cattle ranches—90 percent of the mines and mineral concessions—80 percent of the utilities—practically all the oil industry—and supplied two-thirds of Cuba's imports.
Castro fought to save his country for 40 years against the brute that is the US. Over 35 assassination attempts, CIA budget of $50b to invoke instability & strife.
Capturing of Cuban trawlers, cutting of nets, embargo on basic commodities. The list is endless.
I always wander how prosperous Cuba would have become without having to watch its back all the time. They were basically at War with the US in all but name & in any major war, as Churchill did in th UK, freedoms & liberties have to be suspended & authoritarian rule implemented for the good of the state.
Cuba, without the power to strike back was literally under constant US attack.

    A great, great man imo...
