GRAHAM Dorrans reckons his ex-Baggies team-mate and Costa Rica star will be a smash hit at Celts after being frozen out at the Hawthorns.

GRAHAM DORRANS reckons Cristian Gamboa will be a big man at Celtic after being deemed too wee for West Brom.

The Costa Rica star is set to escape the Land of the Giants and swap his Hawthorne * for the Brendan Rodgers revolution.

Scotland midfielder Dorrans insists Hoops fans should pay no notice to the fact the full-back spent so long being overlooked by Tony Pulis.

At 5ft 9in Gamboa had no chance of getting a sniff once the Baggies boss brought in a few Harlem Globetrotters.

And while the former Livingston man eventually made the switch to Norwich, he’s not surprised his old team-mate is also making an exit.

Dorrans said: “I’d imagine he’s going to be raring to go at Celtic. It’s been a frustrating year or so for him since Tony Pulis came in.

“He played a lot in his first season but he’s maybe not tall enough to be playing at West Brom at the moment. Cristian’s not the biggest but make no mistake, he’ll get stuck in.

“When Pulis came in he wanted to go his own way – a bit like it was for me there – and he found himself out of the team.

"He’s been frozen out at West Brom so will be desperate to get out and back on the pitch every week. He won’t be going to Scotland to sit on the bench.

“Celtic will be getting a hungry player. This is a bit opportunity for him to play with a club like Celtic. The Celtic fans will really take to him.”

Dorrans insisted Gamboa’s strength is on the ground rather than in the air as the Costa Rican is one of the quickest players he’s seen. The 26-year-old’s game is about belting up and down the touchline and getting balls in the box.

Dorrans can see how he’d fit in to the Rodgers master plan as the Hoops boss has spent all summer souping up his squad with speed merchants.

Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele – along with homegrown sprint king James Forrest – have turbo-charged the Celts attack.

Gamboa will slot right in with the flying squad – and give them a run for their money.

Dorrans – who is targeting a return from a groin injury after the international break – added: “Cristian’s a really good player and a great guy. I’m sure he’ll fit in really well at Celtic.

“He’s an attacking full-back or wing-back who loves to get forward and he’s got a great delivery on him. I’ve got no doubt he’ll provide plenty of assists in Scotland.

“His main asset is his pace though – he’s absolutely lightning.

“When it came to the sprints he was one of the fastest at the club. He definitely left me behind, that’s for sure!

"There are not many quicker in the game and I know Brendan Rodgers is always talking about getting pace in to his team. Cristian will give him that.”

Gamboa might have spent a season in the stands but Dorrans is sure he won’t get stage fright at Celtic Park.

The former Rosenborg defender has 47 caps for his country and was one of the star turns as Costa Rica reached the World Cup quarter-finals in Brazil two years ago.

His displays there tempted former West Brom gaffer Alan Irvine to splash £2million to bring him to the UK from Norway and Gamboa managed to hit the ground running in the Premier League in his first season before the boss got the bullet.

Dorrans said: “He’s not going to be intimidated by playing at Parkhead.

"He’s got a lot of experience, he’s played in the Premier League, he’s got lots of international caps and he’s played in World Cups.

“I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to playing in the Old Firm games and in the Champions League. He’ll cope no problem.

“He’ll do well. His main strength is going forward and Celtic get a lot of possession, especially in Scotland.”

Gamboa has been aware size matters at West Brom for more than a while. He managed just a few minutes here and there under Pulis last term and hasn’t had a look in this season.

The writing was on the wall back in March when he said: “I don’t play because the boss doesn’t like me.

“He has always liked these two-metre tall defenders and likes to play with four centre-backs. He doesn’t like wing-backs capable of attacking.

“My style doesn’t suit his style. So, I have no chances of playing.”

Gamboa had heard it all before. The big two sides in Costa Rica – Deportivo Saprissa and Liga Deportiva Alajuelense – both told him he was too small to make the grade as a pro.

But the defender insisted being written off was the makings of him. Gamboa said: “When I went went to those clubs they said, ‘Don’t call us, we’ll call you’.

“I ended up waiting nervously beside the phone but it never rang.

“I can laugh now, even though at the time it was hard.

“Being small made everything more difficult for me but also helped me build character.”

CELTIC are delighted to announce the signing of Cristian Gamboa from English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion on a three-year deal.
The Costa Rican internationalist has notched up almost 50 appearances for his country and he was a star of the side that reached the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals.
A pacey full-back with attacking instincts, the 26-year-old has spent the past two years at The Hawthorns after impressing for Norwegian side Rosenborg.
He has also had spells at Fredrikstad and Danish outfit FC Copenhagen, having left his homeland at the age of 21.
Gamboa becomes Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Moussa Dembele, Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair and Dorus De Vries.
