    As the title suggests...

    Willie Maley (1897-1940)
    Jimmy McStay (1940-1945)
    Jimmy McGrory (1945-65)
    Jock Stein (1965-1975, 1976-78)
    Sean Fallon (Acting Manager 1975-76)
    Billy McNeill (1978-83, 1987-91)
    Davie Hay (1983-87)
    Liam Brady (1991-93)
    Lou Macari (1993-94)
    Tommy Burns (1994-97)
    Wim Jensen (1997-98)
    Jozef Venglos (1998-99)
    John Barnes (1999-2000)
    Kenny Dalglish (Acting Manager 2000)
    Martin O'Neill (2000-05)
    Gordon Strachan (2005-09)
    Tony Mowbray (2009-10)
    Neil Lennon (2010-14, 2019* )
    Ronny Deila (2014-16)
    Brendan Rodgers (2016-19)

Not including caretakers who filled in for a game or two, but have included Fallon, who took over from Stein for the entire of the 1975-76 season, while Big Jock recovered from the car crash that nearly killed him. Have also included Dalglish, who took over from Barnes following that infamous night, and was manager for the last 3+ months of that 1999-2000 season.

Is it just about the wins and the losses that count? Is it just silverware that matters? Do you take into account the context of the times or interference from the Board?

The game has changed, from where there was just 6 fulltime Head Bhoys in the first century of Celtic's history, and have been more than double that number in little over 30 years since.

    Who was the best?

Is the best and greatest the same thing?

Who did their best with what they could?

    Who would we rather forget?

    Discuss.

Some of the best stuff i've seen us play was when Tommy was in charge.

“The best” for me is the one with the most individual qualities, regardless of outside influence (ie players at his disposal, financial backing etc), whereas “the greatest” is the one who achieved the most and had the biggest influence. In both cases, as far as our managers go, big Jock is head and shoulders above the rest.

In terms of who did the best with what they could, I’d say Strachan who won league titles and got to the CL’s last 16 only to be knocked out by the eventual champions in extra time. All while cost cutting at that. Burns deserves a big mention in that category too.

As for who I’d rather forget, Rodgers is a *, but I’d go for Barnes or Mowbray.

Stein is clearly the best although Maley's record is unbelievable.

During my lifetime we've had great times under MON, WGS, Lenny and he who shall bot be named.

Honourable mentions to Cesar and Jansen for pulling memorable titles out of the bag when the huns were in full financial doping mode.

Stein is the greatest and best. Strachan or Lennon probably over achieved the most.

Rat, Kenny, Barnes and Mowbray - let's just forget their time in charge.

Top 4 would have to be
    Stein
    Maley
    MoN
    Burns/McNeil.

None of our most recent managers have been close to the greatness of our past. Lenny could do it if he takes us to the 10.

Tommy Burns was manager when I first started getting into Celtic. The team were in a rough place he won the cup and turned the team back into where Celtic should have been and challenging a dominating Rangers team. Without him the ten years post him would not have been so successful (my opinion anyway).
I would rather forget Barnes, I have no idea what the club was thinking.

Still the best football I have seen a Celtic side play, though I think O’Neill’s side gave me the greatest memories.

Don't get me wrong - have many fond memories of the football that the team was playing when TB was in charge, but it has to be said that compared to the dross that we had to put up with in the years proceeding him does colour that to a degree. But it is a big call to say that his stint as manager has such a pronounced legacy, considering the team that MO'N inherited just 3 years after TB departure was vastly different, in that there was only about 4 players that were even at Celtic in TB's final season who were still there when MO'N walked through the door. Tom Boyd, Jackie McNamara, Tommy Johnston and Alan Stubbs (who, with the greatest of respect, did not play much of a role by the time of MO'N's arrival due to cancer and family matters) does not represent a massive legacy.

Not taking anything away from Tommy Burns, but the reasons you've put forward here, do you feel that was entirely down to TB, or should credit be given to the new way that Celtic evolved because of Fergus McCann and the changes he initiated? Was it all TB the starting point for this, or in many ways was he more the bridge between the old school and the new?

    Greatest: Jock Stein

    Best I've saw: Martin O'Neill

Worst: Snake Rodgers (don't give a * what he's won, he's the only manager as far as I'm aware that's walked out on us during a season, that's a good enough reason)
