Are wee too lenient with the term celtic legend i have heard the term be used a lot in the last 5 years or so, what to you guys constitutes a celtic legend .

For instance hartson Sutton lubo lennon are the last to come close but one stands out obviously larsson and that's ️a celtic legend while the others i would say great celtic players . They just fall short of the accolade celtic legends imo and recently i have seen people say izzy commons brown before that wanyama could have been hooper could have been Ledley , nakamura boruc etc etc

You guys get the just so i was wondering what to you constitues the label celtic legend and what separates them from celtic greats

Most of the players you have mentioned are definitly Celtic Heroes. They can also be personal legends by commitment, love for the club and ability/achievements/overall performance as players and/or managers.

Lennon , may have earned his Legondairy status , due to the longivity to Celtic service , and to the many roles in which he served Celtic despite abuse from some fans and that of our enemies.
Larsson achieved Legondary status as he was such a wonderful footballer for Celtic for seven wonderful years .

No disrespect but i think the word Legend gets thrown around to much,i think it should be saved for the very best of the best.

Imo Stein and the European cup winning team are Legends as are Martin Oneil a treble winner and Henke who IMO is Celtics best ever player.

Ronny will automatically become a legend in my eyes if we win the treble this season also.

Only ones I can think of who I would call Celtic legends recently are Larsson, Guidetti and Lennon.

Personally, the only figures I consider legends from the 90s onwards are Larsson, MON and Lennon.

Burns too of course, but he is more fondly remembered as a player from the 80s rather than a manager from the 90s.

The rest are heroes or cult figures perhaps, but the word 'legend' should be reserved for the very best of the best.

    (90s - present)

    Legends:

    Larsson
    O'Neill
Lennon (as both player and manager)

    Heroes:

    Seville squad
    MON's treble squad
    Brown
    Hooper
    Boruc
    Nakamura
    Forster
    Wanyama

    Cult figures:

    McCourt
    Guidetti
    Keane (Robbie)

Martin o' Neil does not deserve the term Celtic Legend . I have known Martin for over 50'years . ( before he was caught cheating in Public Exams).
Martin was manager when Celtic won the treble in 2001 , he was also the manager in 2003 despite having a wonderful team Celtic finished the season winning nothing .
MO'N achievements as manager were doewn to his back-up of Assistant and first team coach , very influential. Once Robertson retired through ill health a couple of years later
MO'N's club management career was effectively over .
Martin thought he was B Clough Mark 2 and could do everything different .

Yes a man who was a ball hair away from winning our second ever European trophy is not a legend.

What is up with the trend of disrespecting our former players and managers on here. People fishing for the likes of me to bight back or what?

Don't be silly mate, Martin is not a legend either, if we had won the UEFA cup fair enough he would have been but fallen short of that loses his potential legend status.

Ronny would have a long way to go as well to become a legend here and a treble this season wouldn't do that but it'd be a great start. if he can implement a tradition and Celtic way of playing over the next 6, 7, 8 seasons or so whilst still winning cups and trophies and plenty league titles and also putting up decent showings year in year out in the CL/EL then then he could become a legend, especially if he guides us to 10 in a row.

    Hero, legend, cult figure,

Doesn't matter we should be glad we have so many vying for that status.

A special mention to WGS who was proud to manage us and is still a great ambassador for the club. :shamrock:

Legendary status is normally achieved when excellence in performances is coupled with longevity of service.

Henrik Larsson is obviously a Celtic legend. He was wonderful here for 7 years both on and off the pitch. He could have gone elsewhere, but stayed with us. Scary to think how many clubs must have wanted him at the time.

Neil Lennon is a curious one. I just started typing away there, but * opening that can of worms.

And, Slaw, put your fishing rod away pal nobody is biting :bbpd:

Lennon is definitely a Celtic legend in my eyes mate, he and Larsson are the only ones since the turn of the century imo.

    Jimmy McGrory

    Jock Stein & Lisbon Lions
    Paul McStay
    Henrik Larsson

I think that's the comprehensive list of legends for me

Taking into account the years he gave, and the performance as both player and a manager, along with the crap he had to endure in his personal life purely because of his association with this club, I'd say he was a legend, too.

1.second manager to get us to a european final, first one in over 30 years
2.first treble in over 30 years
3.first "two in a row" in 20 years
    4. ran away with the league 3 times against a rangers side that had some massive names

Perhaps it was down to fitness and not using his squad, but we also came * close to getting to the last 16 in the 2004 season, narrowly finishing 3rd in a group contaning the french, german and belgium champions. He certainly had his faults but that was the best celtic side since 80s and released us from a decade of domination from rangers. Hes not up their with stein but hes still a celtic legend

Lennon called a traitor in the other thread. Why would anyone want to become a legend if people are just going to blacken your name if it suits the current agenda.
