Whatever happened to this? Why do we neglect the talent we have on our doorstep for more pricey, untested foreign risks?

I personally hate that we have missed out on the Steven Fletchers, James Mccarthys and the likes in the past.. Id even liked to have seen us push the boat out for Goodwillie when he was on form.

Even recently... we have overlooked Johnny Russell, Andrew Robertson, Ryan Gauld, Stevie May. I liked how WGS cherry picked the best- Hartley, Robson, Mcdonald, Caldwell etc.

Would a Stuart Armstrong bring more to our team than a Nir Biton?

Granted we have reaped financial reward from foreign players like Wanyama... But for every Wanyama we have had a few duds.. Surely buying players we know more about represents a smaller risk? We dont operate in an inflated market like England so why dont we do more to secure the best talent Scotland has to offer?

Buying Scottish doesn't guarantee success either . Sometimes players who look stars playing for provincial Scottish teams freeze when they join a big Scottish team .

Foreign players dont guarantee success either. We should look at more homegrown players they know how to play in the SPL, the lad pawlett at aberdeen looks decent

Steven Fletcher doesn't deserve the reputation he has amongst some of our supporters. He's a good player but he hasn't really done much.

    David Goodwillie? :smiley-laughing002:

Robertson, Armstrong, Gauld & Russell would have added real depth to our squad but they'd have cost us £8m+. In hindsight that'd probably have been a far better investment than Bitton, Boerrigter, Tonev, Pukki, Baldé, Bangura, et al. but I suppose our scouts would have really known the United players and their limitations, whereas players playing outwith Scotland might just be that bit better or that but worse - it's a bigger gamble but there's a chance that we'll unearth someone like big Victor (Stuart Armstrong, for all that I think he could do a very good job at Celtic, will likely never reach the level that Wanyama will).

Armstrong & Russell would have been well suited to Lennon's sides.

    100% Totally agree....

Always thought the teams needs a good handful of local lads that understand Celtic and would hurt just as much as us when we get beat.

    Excellent post.

You also have to bear in mind that we have a lot of moaning * in our support - we were moaning about signing players from Ajax & Schalke, imagine what we'd have been like if we'd gone for United players. :56:

All about risk and reward no doubt the suits at celtic find this more beneficial than young potential from local teams.

After seeing the dross we have had lately then has to be scrapped

Fletcher is a quality finisher. Depends what you are judging him on really.. he was on a real purple patch for Sunderland before he got a bad injury playing for Scotland. Now he is getting back to fitness, and probably more due to the fact Sunderland never got Borini, he is back in the Sunderland 1st team and scored two and made a goal at the weekend. Bare in mind Fletcher was a £12m player. So he must have some kind of reputation with someone other than our supporters too.

Goodwillie was linked to us for a while and he too had a season of very good form for Dundee Utd. He had really good technique but things have went * up for him since going down south.

Jordan Roades didn't have his normal 40+ goal a season last year and isn't getting linked with anybody. Blackburn is a joke of club and he is a Tim if we could get the price down to 4mill ( I know they paid 8mill but there owners don't look interested ) would be a great deal

Johnny Russell & James McCarthy are the ones I am most annoyed about us not signing. We turned down the chance to buy Russell, and then not long after, we signed Griffiths. It made no sense whatsoever.

Over the years the only ones id say we've missed out on were McFadden, Fletcher, McCarthy and Russell, the rest im not bothered about.

Mccarthy and fletcher, Mccarthy * me off most as he was a star in the making and we could all see it, plus the fact he was cheap as anything and dying to come.. * joke to be honest..

Fletcher is a quality player hampered by injury, scored.goals regularly and into double figures in the .pl for teams like burnley and wolves i think? Scored plenty when he went to sunderland at first and go injury after injury.. He'd easily be our target man goalscorer if he was here and score for, anyway hibs didn't want.to sell to us..

Clearly we don't believe in the talent on our door step and more importantly we must not believe in the value and profit we can make on Scotlands youngsters..
We should look closer to home, I'm sure the likes of johnny Russell etc could do a job for us at the very least as squad players and we need to.balance it out with raw prospects from Europe and tried/tested and proven in our own back yard..

There is definite homegrown talent we could be integrating in with what we have for cheap and vertically little risk..
