Forgot about kouassi that takes spending to nearly 25 million over five windows only spending 2 million on squad players in defence

I think his point is lawell says cant get them and the manager goes oh well go for these such players when we would be better off saving our money and play some youths of our own

Hayes was signed in June 2017, almost as soon as the previous season ended. It's not like we tried for others then had to settle for him. Rodgers most certainly wanted him.

If he is really settling for 3rd or 4th choice why give us the "quality over quantity" bullshite.

Couple the quality over quantity quote with his recent interviews, and it all points towards him being overruled in player recruitment.

Yes. I have no doubt that PL has a lot to answer for but there are so many people on here blaming him and the board for being tight with money. I certainly agree with that - BR wanted McGinn and (while I think he was over-priced), BR should have been backed. In the end, the club looked inept and we lost out.

However, its so *** obvious that our defence is *** and has been for quite some time. I think BR has to be accountable for this - look at our track record in buying defenders/GKs since BR came on board.

    Gamboa - 1m - never plays
Kolo - decent short term signing for top level experience
Compper 900k - total waste of money
Hendry - 1.5m IMO average SPL at best.
De Vries 450k - poor and cost us in games

I don't buy into the BR being told who to buy nonsense. He's his own man and he raved in public about Hendry.

If you look at BR's history at Liverpool - he is not good at buying defenders - if you talk to decent Liverpool fans, they'll tell you that.

I wasn't too upset about being thumped by PSG + Barcelona (they can spend 150m on 1 player!). However, all 3 goals against AEK were our own fault (Lustig involved in all 3) and its cost us dearly.

I think we'll still win the SPL but we'll lose more games than before - We'd need a lot of luck to win both cups again.

It's all very well asking PL/the board to splash the cash. To be frank, if we got say 6m for Boyota and BR was given that +4m to spend - I have no confidence at all that he + Congerton would spend it on defenders or even if they did - would they be of Hendry/Compper standard?

This time last season Rodgers was asked about signing defenders, he said the defence was fine. That is on record. No Brendan, the defence is not fine and anyone with half a brain can see that. Very strange, can you imagine if we had made it to the cl group stages with the central defence we have, I honestly don’t know what the * Rodgers was thinking. The fact we are making such a big deal over the emission of Boyata just shows what a * shambles our defence is. I couldn’t give a * if he played some games for Belgium in the World Cup, he is and always has been a liability. * sad state of affairs and although the board aren’t blameless Rodgers had made a * of the defence.

So if we had qualified for the cl group stages this is the cannon fodder of a central defence we would have been relying on:

Ajer - let’s not kid ourselves, he has looked good in the SPL but completely inexperienced at European level. Should be learning under experienced defenders not thrown in and expected to contain the some of Europe’s best strikers.

Hendry - Wasn’t even a stand out for Dundee but would have found himself in the cl group stages. Poor * wouldn’t have known what had hit him.

Boyata - The fact such a big drama has been made of his abscence shows what a shambles our defence is. The guy is liability, but because he played a few games for Belgium in the World Cup this has been forgotten about.

Jozo - All over the place, not much more to be said.

Absolute madness that Rodgers would think these players were adequate. The very first thing he should have done is sort out our defence....two years ago. Is there really any Celtic fan out there that couldn’t see our defence needed serious strengthening? Rodgers has done a good job in midfield and attack but his idea of a central defence is so bad it’s hard to comprehend.

Aye, it's mad that Rodgers is sitting there telling Lawwell to "* off" as he begs him to take the £10m kitty specifically for defenders.

Deila refused to address the problem in attack, Lennon refused to address the problem on the wings and defence - doesn't matter which manager we've got, they've always got gaping holes in their team.

Peter Lawwell is at fault, and get him to *.

Its because as a club with not enough funds we have to sign players that might, maybe, could turn into a good or great player, good enough for the first team.....sadly as we have seen with signings and players from the youth ranks the % that don't make it is high. Buying projects leaves you with a high % of failures....buying players that have already proved to be good enough cuts the risk and failings.
p.s. we have seen it often enough, player does not get game time...fans moan.....player gets some game time due to injury or preseason friendly.....player plays *....dropped again.

Or so we're conditioned to believe. Maybe we should just pack up and call it a day as a club, if that were the case.

Sevco have spent big the past two seasons, and have nowhere near the turnover we do.

One things for * sure mind you. You can't be taking on this league campaign and Europa league with that stinking defence. This needs sorted and it * needs sorted pronto. I mean as soon as that plane lands back at Glasgow * need to be behind their desks identifying targets and making calls.

No short term fixes * long term.

    Overruled by who?
Who is bringing players in over the managers head?
The manager is ultimately responsible for who comes in to his squad and he surely has the final say on recruitment. If not then he is a 1st team coach and there is a director of football that we don't know about.

There are no defensive options shortlisted. Rodgers pertained to this in a previous PC. saying that boyata wouldn't be sold as it would not leave enough time to get in a replacement. That, to me , means we haven't even looked at any CBs. if we had potential targets then surely if wouldn't take over 3 weeks to get an offer and deal together.

Of course Lawell and Desmond aren’t blameless but Rodgers should have made it a priority to sort out the defence but he made a * of it, end of story. He spunked £3.5 million on kouasse that should have been spent on a central defender. He signed Gamboa and compper who are nowhere... the board might be tight-fisted but it still doesn’t get round the fact Rodgers has * up big time with the defence. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing when he said last season our central defence was fine, we then went on to get * humiliated in Europe getting pumped 7-1, 6-0 etc. We are now a year on and * all had been done. Sorry but as much as we all like Brendan the truth is he has failed badly defensively

Kinda reminds me of keagan's Newcastle team, he wanted to outscore his opponents. That may work for us domesticly but as we have seen, we will be found out in Europe.

Best way to give yourself a chance to win a match is to stop your opponent scoring!

He does have to take some of the blame, putting all the blame on the board is a bit silly considering the money spent. Eboue Kouassi cost us 3-4m yet Rodgers plays him once every 10 games has to be questioned, gamboa 1m should be ahead of lustig but for whatever Rodgers sees lustig as some sort of 'reliable' defender. Lee Congertons recruitment has been * awful but there are certain players where you do think it was only a Rodgers decision such as Jonny * Hayes. Ntcham probably cost more than what the aek athens starting xi cost which is why Rodgers should be doing better with the players available this season. Blame for this is definitely on the board but Rodgers has to set up better in europe and that useless * congerton needs to get out the club.

We are going backwards and signings like Izaguirre coming back proves that (please don't try and justify this signing because it reeks of laziness by the scouting team). Even Tierney needs to be challenged at left back, Izaguirre coming back is hardly going to push him is it? Like Sutton said we spent more on disco lights than on our defence even though we let in 9 goals in 3 games at home last season in the group. Something will give way very soon since we just lost 40m, but our board wouldn't invest at least half of that back into the team so * them.

60% boards fault for not investing 10-15m on sorting out one of the worst celtic defences in recent times , 30% rodgers fault for failing to find a formation that can be competitive in europe and identifying the right personnel , 10% congertons fault for his * scouting network and can't work on a budget. Any positives going to come out of this?

His comments about the supporters not being happy unless we had Billy McNeill at the back seem very silly now.

40 million wasted by the greedy * tory * in the board, decorating their 3/4 homes as they store their cash in the British Vigirin Islands, tax free. * them all, what a * waste of money those selfish *. Sign a * defender you * *. As soon as they stop believing in European success the club is dead. They can get to *.

Well, what's done is done so we move on from here. Any positives going to come out of this? - good question.

I think the first move is to get rid of Boyota for the best price we can - no brainer.

The situation between PL and BR has to be sorted - even if it means DD banging their heads together. If it can't be sorted - PL can go - I'm pretty sure that DD can find a competent CEO who will be happy to earn 1m+ per annum.

My main worry is BR's philosophy of how to set up a defence which is reflected in the quality of the defenders that he has brought in - very poor.

I don't know if it's just him or a combination of him and Congerton but whoever it is couldn't pick a defender to save their lives.

Someone made the analogy of Keegan's Newcastle team which I think is very apt. If anything really positive is to come out of this, it should be that BR invests in at least 1 centre back whose first priority is to defend! and organize the defence. Did you see the state of our defenders after the 2 AEK goals - **** pathetic - all just looking at each other and no-one taking responsibility.

BR had the same issue at Liverpool! I'm afraid if he sticks to this philosophy, we will be like Newcastle - great to watch but ultimately losing out in high scoring matches.
