Would like to see ange build an elite b team , cherry picking the best from the b squad and adding some from out of contract players to others looking to get closer to first team game time , get them gelling for 2 years and ready them to build a new first team

Celtic is delighted to announce a new contract extension for Ben Summers, with the midfielder committing his future to the club until 2025.

The 18-year-old is one of the brightest prospects in the Celtic youth system, having started his journey in the Hoops as a seven-year-old back in 2011.

Since then, he has worked his way into the B team and has become a regular in the side, managed by both Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus, which is competing in the Lowland League and UEFA Youth League this season.

With the new deal now signed and sealed, Ben has his eyes set on continuing his development through the ranks and hopefully making his mark in the first-team in the near future.

Speaking exclusively to the Celtic website after signing the contract, Ben Summers said: “I’m delighted to get the contract over the line.

“I’ve been here since 2011 when I was seven-years-old and to be here for an extra three years is an honour.

“I feel proud to still be here and to get another three years is an honour and I’m really happy.

“My goal is to train and play as well as I can, and if I get my opportunity then I need to take it with both hands and be here for many more years.

'There’s no point in getting to this stage and then resting. I need to keep going and wait for my opportunity, and if I keep training well then I don’t see why I can’t get that opportunity.'

“This is the right club for my development, I’m really happy here and I have been since I was seven.

“I’ve been with Darren O’Dea since I was 16 when I signed my first professional contract and now working with Stephen McManus as well this year, both of them have increased my development.

“The way we’re playing and the opportunities we have with the Youth League, there are a lot of opportunities to show what we can do and I can’t wait to keep going.”

I don't know anything about him but I want to keep any youngster at the club for as long as it takes to determine if they're going to make the cut.

I hate losing youth players before they've kicked a ball for us properly.

When Ange Postecoglou named the Celticsquad to take on Hibernian in the SPFL Premiership, one name stood out.

With Aaron Mooy unavailable due to injury, Matt O'Riley was restored to the starting XI but in the Dane's place on the bench came an up-and-coming B team midfielder: Ben Summers.

Summers has yet to make his senior bow for the Hoops but it is understood he has trained regularly with the first team over the past few months alongside fellow youngsters like Bosun Lawal and Rocco Vata.

Part of the academy system from the age of seven, the Celtic official website relays that Summers was placed in the B team for the start of the 2021-22 season.

He combined B-team duties in the Lowland League with some games for the under-18s. This term, he has already bagged a handful of goals and a few assists as the Hoops mount a title challenge in the Lowland League.

Summers also, as the club website attests, played a young Tommy Burns in a documentary about the club legend's life.

Contract status
At the end of September 2022 the club announced Summers had committed to a new deal through to 2025.

International status
Summers and fellow B-teamer Matthew Anderson were both called into the Scotland Under-21s squad earlier this month for friendlies against Sweden and Wales in Spain.




What they said...
Former B team boss Tommy McIntyre sang his praises last season, calling him "a talented kid" who possesses "great footwork and knows where the goal is".

B team boss Stephen McManus called him "terrific" just last month and pinpointed the impact training more often with the first team has had on his development.

Meanwhile, he has been referenced by first-team manager Postecoglou directly in previous press conferences too.

The Australian said: "I think that the work Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus are doing at the moment is outstanding. We’ve already had Bosun Lawal and Rocco Vata with us but there are guys like Matthew [Anderson], Ben Summers and a couple of others.

What he said...
Summers has clear designs on where he wants to improve his game - and it bodes well for his chances in a first-team so focused on attacking output.

“It's something I need to add to my game, more goals and assists,” he said recently after scoring against Championship side Queen's Park in the Glasgow Cup. “I’ve spoken with the coaches about it.

“I think in that position, on the edge of the penalty area, I can sometimes take an extra touch and try to look for an extra pass.

“But this time, I was just focusing on getting my shots away. I had a few shots in the second half, which I maybe should have finished. But it’s always something I can look to improve on.”

It was something of a surprise to see young Ben Summers on the Celtic bench today but Ange Postecoglou reckons his performances in training merited the decision.

Summers, still just 18, was part of the matchday squad for Saturday’s victory over Hibernian and while he didn’t get any minutes on the pitch, it would undoubtedly have been an occasion he relished.


The youngster has been a regular for Celtic B this season, getting himself on the scoresheet five times from midfield in the Lowland League. He’s one of a clutch of youngsters who could make a senior squad impact over the next 18 months, per comments from the manager in January.


Asked about his inclusion, Postecoglou told BBC Radio Scotland [14:32]: “We’ve obviously got a couple of injuries in the midfield area with Aaron and Tomoki out. Ben has been training with us for a little while, he’s been really strong in the B team this year and performing well.

“He looks the part in our training and we needed another midfielder on the bench today, so he gets his chance. At a big club, it’s hard, but the reality is you do get an opportunity like he does today, it doesn’t take much – a couple of injuries.




The key thing for young players is to perform well when they get the opportunity, train well and gain the trust of teammates and coaches. Ben gets his today.”


Summers is a player on the up and comes across as a determined character who is eager to listen to coach feedback and improve as an individual. Just a couple of weeks ago he spoke about the desire to add a more consistent goal threat to his game, for example.

B team coach Darren O’Dea has also singled him out for praise in the past, while former Academy coach Greig Robertson suggested he is one of the players who could make a big breakthrough at the Bhoys.

Summers was included on a pre-season trip to Austria last Summer and had been in line for further trips to Australia and Portugal during the winter break, although injury scuppered those plans.

 

Shame we were never really in a position to give him a few minutes. Still some buzz for him though getting on the bench.

 

You'd imagine that when the league is wrapped up....Summers, Vata and Anderson may get some minutes..

 

Future Celtic Captain Material. I hope that Calmac is mentoring him and keeping an eye on him. Delighted that the Celtic B lads are doing well.
