A shortened explanation, I'll try to be neutral but I warn you know, I may be biased towards the Palestinians...

Palestine (or the state of israel as it is now known) has always been contested by the Jews and the Arabs. Before 1947, Palestine was under British control and Jews and Arabs lived peacefully side by side. In 1947, israel was chosen to be the new homeland of the Jews. The UN voted for the state of israel and said the land should be shared like this:




israel moved onto the land and kicked around 3 million Palestinians out of their homes and Jewish Immigrants moved straight in. The neighbouring nations declared war on Israel and most thought israel would be wiped out, but they were backed by US weapons and managed to defeat the other countries. Around half the Palestinians moved into refugee camps in other countires and half moved into refugee camps in Palestine.

Throughout the years israel has controlled thgose Palestinin areas. They control access, what gets and out, who gets in and out. Those refugee cams that were set up temporarily when israel was created are now permanenet cities in the Palestinian area. Throughout the years israel's army has been supplied and trained so well its now the 4th most efficient and well-equipped army in the world. Palestinians have resorted to violence, sme people draw parallels to the conflict in Ireland, with the Palestinian' compared to the IRA and the israeli's the British army. So yeah, both groups absolutely hate each other and imo, will never be at peace.. Palestinian factions will never be crushed, but the israeli's wont either. And that's a brief description for you mate..

America is the biggest backer of isreal. it has vetoed'd nearly every UN security council resolution condemning israel. Those planes used to kill around 500 Palestinians in the past two days were American made. The bombs dropped were imported from america. America gives israel more money than it gives to all thrid-world countries combined.

rewriting history is always used to get your point of view across.war was declared on israel by its arab neighbours as soon as the state of israel was declared,as mandated by the u.n,israel was invaded by said arab countries whose avowed aim was the destruction of the fledgling state and the massacre of its people,read some unbiased history,many times during the following 60 years attempts have been made by israel to barter land for recognition by the arab states and peace,to date only egypt and jordan have seen fit to recognise israel and live in peace with it.yes atrocities have been carried out by both sides,but to suggest that only israel is the aggressor is childish and so one sided as to be laughable,80 rockets were fired into israel last wednesday,thousands this year,during the ceasefire hamas did nothing to prevent the firing of rockets,no rockets were fired from the west bank were a separate govt now lives virtually at peace with israel,trying to broker a lasting peace and claim a place in the world of nations,now if you are going to protest,you must know the facts,and some of the facts you may not like.the first duty of any government is to protect its citizens,israel has that right,terrorist organisations such as hamas,hizbollah,and iran,syria as governments who sponsor these groups site rocket launchers in civiliian areas thus when israel strikes back,casualties are inevitable,this hamas knows it callously allows its people to die,it suits their purpose

 

The * palestinians are still firing rockets in to israel, why don't you looney tunes and your * PLO islamic * brigade go take a * to yourself. How many Christians are murdered in Islamic * holes like Pakistan, Iran and Darfur while morons on here are screaming support for muslim terrorists.

How many Jews have been ethnically cleansed from Islamic * countries, and if, as the islamic nazis claim, it is their land, why are they in Britain then spouting their hatred. using their * logic this is our land.

another thing that bothers me with a certain section of the celtic support is the assumption that they are always right,the poppy "protest",palestine,john reid,gordon strachan ffs,and its not even an argument,they are right,and thats it,some of the statements about the history of the middle east conflict are laughable in their inaccuracy,yet they are peddaled as fact and truth,to all fair minded people,i say ,do some research,check out the facts,dont take what some self interest group says as fact,and im not jewish,in case thats the next thing thrown,im scots irish,catholic raised who happens to have an interest in history,real history,not fiction

 

OK i tried posting earlier but got deleted or something! Most people writing have lived in a cosy/no worry lifestyle nothing to worry about love to glorify terrorists/opposition! all i can say is i grew up as a catholic in east belfast seen a lot of *! supporting terrorists/so called occupying forces its not big its not clever and there is certainly not anything glorifying about it! its a load of *! cant understand why anyone on here supports either side israel/hamas are just as bad as each other this is the 21st century ffs really * me off when people support so called terrorist and governments the only thing people should be supporting is unity and peace for human beings

 

Dont think we should let an opinion get in the way of an actual fact - and the fact is that Israel's bombs have killed hundreds of innocent civilians over the last 48 hours.

Now bare this in mind and define "terrorists." Not suggesting for one second that Hamas are entirely innocent over the years, but for heavans sake, this to me is ethnic cleansing on a huge scale and supported by the Western World.

Also I'm waiting to see comment from Israel on the 8 UN workers that have been killed. I tell you mate, I've worked for the UN in Lebanon (back in the mid 80's), ordinary good people with a good skill set, and you work for them wearing your light blue vests with your UN emblam, you get your badges and your shirts and you're proud to say to your parents and your mates that you work for the United Nations. And I think to myself that yeh, I'm in Lebanon, its probably the most dangerous place in the world (which it was back in the mid 80's), but I'm working with the UN, I'm fine, I'm safe cos I'm United Nations.

Now I dont know the nationalities of those 8 UN people killed. Put the * Bless America and * Bless Israel stuff to one side - who on earth thought about the families of the 8 killed by Israels bombs and rockets, and who on earth is going to call them to say their sons/daughters have been killed whilst serving the United Nations. That stupid cow from the Israeli government (that alarmingly is thinking about running for presidency of the the Knesset), well is she gonna call them ? Dont think so.

The Palestinian people are ok when left alone, just leave them be - they dont mean any harm.

No harm having an opinion mate, but lets not be deflected by what is fact.

 

This thread is disappointing... Z it's not as if Hamas is just sitting pretty and doing nothing getting massacred by Israel. Hamas wants a stranglehold over Palestine and they can't do this with peace... they need war to survive. I think your loyalties cloud your understanding. Basically, this is the picture I get from you (and I've paid attention to many of your Middle Eastern theme debates).

Power will always corrupt people and although Israel responsed using too much force, you would be well advised to show your disgust at both the Israeli government and Hamas. The world is not Black/White, Good/Evil.

 

great post diegan,totally agree,and i agree with yours croydon tim,hamas are fighting a proxy war for iran and hizbollah and the hawks in israel are too quick to jump in,all guns blazing,but the essential point cannot be argued,if hundreds of rockets were not fired weekly into israel then israel would not attack,it is devastating to israeli life to go to war,calling up thousands of reservists,and putting civilian life on hold is not a response taken lightly
