The 2009 World Darts Championship begins on Friday, 19 December, taking place at Alexandra Palace for the second year.
Unlike many of the televised tournaments, the PDC World Championship is played over a "sets" format. In the first round, matches are "best of five" sets with each set being played as the first to three legs.
The prize fund for the 2009 World Darts Championship is the largest ever with £740,000 being distributed between the players, depending on how far they progress. Being knocked out in the first round bags you £5,000 but what they're all playing for is the £125,000 winner's prize and the title of World Darts Champion - of the PDC at least.
The first round will be played from Friday until Tuesday 23 December before the tournament takes a break for Christmas, returning on Saturday 27 December.

The third greatest sporting event of the year has now begun. Come on the POWER.

Barneveld needs to lose more weight, when the bright lights shine, Barney wilts.

Van EIJDEN v Anastasia DOBROMYSLOVA. The russian princess has just won the first leg. Looking at the biggest upset since Lloyd George gave them the vote.
