check this out, I was amazed that we have had so few actual out and out left backs at Celtic over the years, I mean Tommy Gemmill was the man but post Gemmill my fav has to be Tommy boyd and Tosh Mckinlay but check out this list.

    Lee Naylor 2006-
    Mark Wilson 2006- (really a right-back)
    Mo Camara 2005-06
Ross Wallace 2002-06 (started as left midfielder)
Ulrik Laursen 2002-05 (also played centre half)
Momo Sylla 2001-05 (he played everywhere, including here)
    Joos Valgaeren 2000-05 (on occasion)
Steve Guppy 2001-04 (on occasion, really a left midfielder)
    Stephen Crainey 1999-2004 (full-back)
    Michael Gray 2003
    Tom Boyd 1992-2003
    Stephane Mahe 1997-2001
Tosh McKinlay 1994-99 (originally played at full-back)
Dariusz Wdowczyk 1989-94 (really a central defender)
    Paul McLaughlin 1989-91 (a full-back, made only 5 appearances)
    Anton Rogan 1986-91 (really a full-back)
    Danny McGrain 1967-87 (really a right-back)
    Mark Reid 1977-85
    Alan Sneddon 1977-81
    Graeme Sinclair 1982-85
    Brian Whitaker 1983-84
Andy Lynch 1973-80 - captain for two years while McGrain was injured
Jim Brogan 1963-75 (often played as sweeper)
Tommy Gemmell 1961-71 (also played right-back)
    Jim Kennedy 1955-65
    Frank Meechan 1952-59
Sean Fallon 1950-58 (played full-back and centre forward)
    Alex Rollo 1948-54

Oneill hardly used wingbacks, preferring the three centre backs. I think we are probably hurting from that a little bit.

Naylor makes me cry. He cannot defend, he cannot attack, he cannot cross. Someone please tell me why is he a Celtic FC starter :55:

you reckon the reason we dont have a good enough left back is because 3 and a half years ago we didn't play one? :97:

Used to love Tosh and Mahe. Michael Gray was decent too, but wanted too much money. I think Mahe still holds the record for the fastest ever yellow card.

Apart from Tommy Gemmell, imo Tosh McKinlay has been our best left back, that man could cross a ball, i'll always remember that cross for big Pierre's header for 3-3 against the huns, legend :50:

I would have added Jackie McNamara to that list as he played there for a great many games and did excellent there.

yeah he was excellent in his first season but unfortunatley for us he's been pish ever since :54:

i didn't realise loovens was left footed :87: if so why dont we try him out at left back :icon_idea: also, maybe thats why he's been pish at right centre back

Err don't mean to be pedantic here but what you're describing is the wingback system 3-5-2... I.e. O'Neill would prefer Alan Thompson and Didier Agathe at wingback, and Thompson was really a left midfielder...

What do you mean "really a full-back"? Because left backs are full-backs!
