Agreed...Roy Keane (aged 19 at the time) was a semi-professional with Cobh Ramblers in League of Ireland when he was signed for £47K by Notts Forest.

I remember travelling the length and breadth of Ireland following Derry City at that time and Keane, whilst a decent player, wasn't exactly shaking the foundation of Irish football.

You have to speculate to accumulate.

I think you're totally right. Im all for taking a chance on young players from the Irish league given our constraints. I was just having a wee jab at your pollyanna faith in the ability of our scouts/manager to pick out the GOOD ONES given our recent record. :50: I won't be holding my breath waiting for these players to blossom into the next Roy Keane.

I think the fact they are coming from the Irish league throws a lot of people off these signings, if they were coming from Europe people would think they would ave a better chance of making it. as for that numpty demanding first team footie, get ta *

If you actually took the bother to read the article you'll see he does not demand first team football.

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/football/spl/celtic/2008/12/01/i-won-t-join-celtic-to-play-in-reserves-warns-hoops-transfer-target-niall-mcginn-86908-20937944/

He merely states that he would rather stay at a club where he can get first team football. There is a big difference.

Read it and don't be sucked in by sensationalist headlines designed to alienate the guy before he has the chance to put on the hoops.

Cant say its a bad move just beacause these players are unknown.
as its been sayd already, unknown players have made it to the top.

    Lets just see what happens

Just to point out, Keane never played against Derry for Cobh.

Another point, McGinn played the last 30 odd mins for norn iron V Hungary two weeks ago and created more chances than the entire rest of the team did in the whole game.

Man of the match and that was his debut! He just won the Irish young POTY and was MOTM in the recent cup final in Dublin.

I think he will hold of for a championship club though as he is adamant that he wants to be involved in a first team squad.

I think it would take him 6 months to get that at Celtic Pk.

i liked that fella mc ginn from derry saying he'd only come here if he's guaranteed first team football! i like to see players from here do well but surely they'd be better going to a lower league english team than coming here and rotting in the reserves

Didn't hear many people in the UK screaming Henrik's name before he signed for us!

Turned out not too bad either eh

love when we sign good celtic men , people who know what it means to pull on that jersey and run out in the hoops.
