It's a little different here in the US (with a different name: Veterans Day); we honor those who gave it to the British Army more than 200 years ago and then we also remember those who served alongside the British Army in WWI and WWII; really all armed conflcits; and in the end we pay tribute and honor them for protecting our right to go to sporting events, arguing over things over the internet, procrastinating, etc.

My suggestion is that you wear the poppy in support of troops past and present regardless of opinion towards current conflicts wherever and pray (hey, remember this team has Catholic roots?!) for their safe return. Don't take the suggestion, well then don't knock anyone for wearing a poppy, just sing loud and proud for Celtic at Parkhead :bbpd:.

We remember, We celebrate, We believe...

Remember a time when Britian fought with America? That is what the 4th July is about in the states.

Good to see that some countries can celebrate thier history while still repecting ours and acknowledging the Americans that fought beside the British and the other nations that were against the * party .

There is some right nonsense being posted in this thread!

Fact: Celitc Football Club have been supporting the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the UK armed forces since WWI

Fact: 7 players from Celtic's book lost their lives in WWI

Fact: Milne, Corbett, Airlie, Paterson, Fisher, Duffy, Gallagher, Shields, Anderson, Watters, Rae, Paton and the captain, Willie Lyon all served in WWII (edited)

Fact: Willie Lyon showed that he also had leadership qualities off the park, he was wounded in action at Normandy, promoted to the rant of Major in the Scots Guards and awarded the Military Cross.

For those above 3 facts alone, the wearing of poppies is justified!

I've asked this question now numerous times and still not received a reasonable reply. To all of you up in arms about us wearing poppies or celebrating remembrance day today, where were your protests before now?

An explanation of why i did not clap :

Bloddy sunday, The ballymurphy massacre, The murders of Aiden Macanespie and peter mcbride - these are just a few of the atrocities commited by the british troops in Ireland. THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE FATHERS, GRANDFATHERS AND GREAT GRANDFATHERS WHO WERE CONSCRIPTED TO FIGHT IN TWO WORLD WARS. THIS POPPY DAY IS ABOUT THE BRITISH ARMY IN HERE AND THE NOW - ANS IS BEING GIVEN EXTRA IMPETUS THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THE FALLING RECRUITMENT FIGURES AS A RESULT OF ITS INVOLVEMENT IN UNPOPULAR CONFLICTS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN

If you were so up in arms over * Sunday why's it taken over 30 years for your protest to surface?

The people who died in WW1 & WW2 were not the English Yobs of today with bulldog tatoos, it was folks like my grandfather who had to do national service, theyd no doubt rather have been in O2 workin 9-5 selling mobiles but the choice wasnt there.

Also remember the people who went to fight for their country probobly only knew the one side of the war which was portrayed in the papers, they didnt have the internet to sift through all the reasons and agendas, they just went out and died because they were asked to.

I respect peoples right to protest and I respect the people who applauded, I was 12 mins late so missed the lot.

If you are going to say that remembering the IRA (the legitimate strain, I forget which one it was) is out of order, then remembering the British Army is out of order. I just don't see how you can have it both ways... Then take into account that there's a German, Italian, two Japanese, and two Irishmen in the squad and it's easy to see how it can be a little bit of a sticky subject.

And I'm very against IRA chanting in Parkhead.

I was proud of the fans today, well done again, booing the losers who left was really superb, they all crept back in sheepishly, it was pathetic, anyway, in my opinion the fans put them in there place and common decency won the day. Fine, if you dont agree with poppies etc, then sit quietly like some did, i respect those people, but those who left should never be allowed back, they were a disgrace! And also...on wednesday against those buggers, the fans did brilliant not to retaliate or lose the heads over the FTP chants, the fans showed great strength and common sense, well done to all decent fair minded celtic fans!

I sympathise with the rebels among us who i include myself but if it means the clubs name being dragged through the mud well i think i would likr to see less media coverage concerning singing rebel its a red face for most celtic fans rebel or not

John Reid will tonight be sitting chuffed at the fact that he has almost completely wiped out the voice of dissent from a once proud support, all in the space of a year. A dark day for Celtic, fans against each other, stewards taking seat numbers of people who walked out, fans in poppies spitting on protesting fans..

Today's the day JR and the PLC have split Celtic in two, I watched two guys walking out lose their season ticket, the reason given to one was because he had a Palestine flag, the other guy for allegedly shouting sectarian abuse. I saw countless other guys who refused to clap during the applause ejected for trivial reasons, one for having an 'un-official' two stick. The same stewards who couldn't stop a wee junkie getting onto the park v Man U. John Reid, are you proud of what you've managed to do. Now that my seat numbers been taken, I won't be suprised if my season ticket turns red and jams at the next game. If it does, * it, I'm not going back.

When he says keep politics out of CP, he really means, keep poltics that could hurt the PLC out of here, it was that * today that brought the biggest amount of politics into the ground, he consulted nobody before giving his consent to the poppy and applause issue.

I think the split has more to do with the fact that the demographics are actually, you know, split, between Scottish and Irish. (There's many more Scottish than Irish but it balances out with the Scots who pretend to be Irish).

Another incident today, and this one's a craker. I * you not, a 13 year old boy taken by stewards and having his details took. The reason, for having a non-official flag. The flag was the Irish tri-colour, the same one thats hanging above the * North Stand. The stewards then said only official flags bought from celtic were ten allowed. Mybe another reason was because the thirteen year old was sitting in area 111, the area where the GB sit.

Again I say it, I deny no one not one single person of their right to oppose something (especially something I myself oppose). What I do have a problem with is them using Celtic and Parkhead as their own political circus. The only thing that is going to happen off the back of that is our club being dragged through the mud backwards and shafted every which way off of the media, neutral football fans and the authorities.

What is the point in it? Go and protest where it matters, Parkhead on a Saturday afternoon when there is a football match on is not it.

All in my opinion. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
