was in brussels last week with a hearts fan and a motherwell fan. we had a few drinks and they asked me after i'd been to the toilet which nationality I consider myself( obviously were discussing me when I wasn't there as I told them I was a celtic fan earlier on that day).I thought , strange question, but answered irish scottish. they looked at each other knowingly and said 'typical celtic fan'.insulted, I asked them if italian american or german french were nationalities which they had a problem with. they said that was different. eh, why?

    This is pub chat, intit?

Use Scots-Irish it sounds better. People 'll think you're a yank if you say that too. Total mayhem will ensue.

Call yourself what you want. Except Deirdre.

    Moved to pub....

In answer to your question, if you have Scottish and Irish blood in you, then feel proud to call yourself that.

I consider myself Scots-Irish. However baring in mind that to Americans, the term Scots-Irish means Protestant, I wouldn't shout about it.

You are what you feel you are. I would not use the Scots-Irish expression though as that over here in the USA very much means WASP.

I would dispute that point with you. I was born in Malta because my dad was in the RAF. I was there for about a year then moved to other countries. I am definately not Maltese and I do class myself as Irish/Scottish as both halves of my family are from both places and I grew up in Paisley and Dumfries in between going to other countries due to my dad's postings.

My brothers were born in France, England and Northern Ireland but according to you even though they are my brothers and we are all of the same parents we are different nationalities

People are born on a boat or a plane - what nationality are they in your logic?

My kids were born in England and both brought up here - they feel as if they are English, although my daughter saw the light and decided to invoke her Irishness when she moved to Galway and is now married and bringing my granddaughter over there. I am sure when she grows up she will feel Irish.

Not everything is black and white - there are too many grey areas

If you do it because of the Celtic connection thing then your not really irish scottish but if you do it because you've got irish blood or connections then its cool :50:

If they asked you the question and thats your reply then there's nothing wrong with being proud at what you are.

It's usually when people run around throwing it in other folks face's they become peeved, just sounds as if they fancied a wee moan really.

I'm Scottish, but I like the Irish part of my heritage. Going further back I find the probable Norwegian element interesting too. But I am Scottish, though with Irish genes or whatever too. One and the same really.

I agree with those who say you are what you 'feel ' you are. My eldest son considers himself Spanish but says he's Scottish as well, but more Spanish really - he is only 6, so forgive his argument. All his own opinion too, based on what he knows of Dad. My other son is only 3 and is a total space cadet: says he wants to be Japanese cos he already knows how to speak it. (I kid you not.)

But it all boils down to what you feel you identify with yourself. At the end of the day it'll only be a small part of what makes you you. All the other bits are more important, I think anyway. Nice to be Scottish. And Irish. And both. And a Tim. And me. And you. Go for it.

Im Scottish but very proud of my Irish roots. I would also say i was Scottish if asked, but i would have no problem with anyone saying irish/scottish at all.

exactly, but is this no the point of the post,

that folk with irish roots are calling themselves irish scottish or scots irish

its the same as all those new yorkers calling themselves italian american, but they were born in america with italian roots, YOUR AMERICAN!

so i suppose im more than entitled to call myself irish-scottish, but dont want to or have never felt the need to

id like to be half japanese though

    You lot are all normal.....

Im fooking English/German due to my ancestry.

    How fooking mad is that?

It can be fun in the major football tournaments though when England fail to qualify or get knocked out on penalties
