With me I guess the first music I was ever exposed to were people like The Stones (early stuff), Marvin, Aretha, Smokie, loads of Motown and Deebo and early funk, The Kinks, The Who and of course The Beatles. That was all down to my mum who was a massive soul and r&b fan and my love for soul and r&b has stuck with me. It gave me a good base to start exploring other groups and genres like reggae, ska, northern soul and obscure US funk, but growing up I suppose the groups I really got "into" in a big way were people like Madness, The Beat & The Specials as well of course, The Jam.

Weller's lyrics and his love of 60's soul came powering through to me in a massive way when I was growing up. I really related to the messages coming out in his songs and became a Jam fanatic, buying up loads of imports and rarities. Couldn't get enough of seeing them live either and although that followed on through to The Style Council it was more a watered down version and I became less fanatical in the mid 80's and started to explore other groups, like Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths (Johnny Marr's playing was mesmerising) and a few others, but it was more an exploration than an "into" thing. I kind of lost my way musically in the mid to late 80's but when Screamadelica hit the racks I was all over it in a massive way. I remember listening to the Roses on either Peel's show or some other late night show and being totally blown away by them. The Primals, the Roses and subsequently Oasis managed to capture a feeling and by then I'd already started to catch Weller's solo stuff and his resurgence to me was amazing. That new found vibe that was going on from about 92 - 98 carried me along on a seriously mental wave of live gigs and festivals and got me digging out some of my own oldies and then I got a hold of my mum's original vinyls and started listening to them again and I'd say that from the late 90's I've kind of been stuck in a time warp of 60's soul and r&b and early - mid 70's funk, coupled with the 90's sound that grabbed me so much.

I've explored a few other favourites along the journey, people like Floyd, Marley and really obscure funk and enjoyed them all in their own moment, but I'm a soul boy at heart and don't think that'll ever change!

Erasure, still love them to this day, hard to see them live in Glasgow though as they always sell out within a day!

Save for them Guns N Roses
