    Precisely.
When some of our fans try to explain away singing that as a commemoration of the Easter Rising or the War Of Independence, it embarrasses me, and makes us look as bad as the Huns.
It is a Provo chant. My Grandfather (* Rest Him) was, like me, fiercely patriotic, and it was partly through his influence that I got my love for Celtic and my deep nationalism. Point is, he hated the Provos, and thought that they did nothing to advance the cause of Irish freedom and unity.
When you look at what's going on in Stormont now, you have to agree he was right.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating your Irish ancestry at Parkhead and elsewhere, but there are more appropriate ways of doing it. I'd rather sing 'Willie Maley', 'Four Leaf Clover', 'YNWA' etc til the cows come home, than have to sing songs that really don't have anything to do with Celtic.

    Hail, Hail!

    I don't. :icon_mrgreen:

But anyway, there is a bit of a double standard here. There's a line between banter and offensive but I'm not sure anyone would agree exactly where that line is.

The problem is in Scotland very few of the fans have much unbiased knowledge of this and the complexity of it all. For me, if you are going to show support for an organisation who take life then you had better make sure that you know all the issues. pira never had a mandate for violence. Very few in the south like them and until they had given up violence for some time they even were the minority party among northern nationalists too. You will never get accurate figures but I doubt much more than a third of northern nationalists ever supported violent campaigns. For a start it would have gone against most peoples religious beliefs to kill in cold blood.

but its not a state. There has been no state of England since 1603 (if I remember right). A lot of foreigners call Britain England but its wrong and annoying if they actually mean the whole island/state. Either Britain or the UK is better. Britain is a sort of short hand for the UK which in full is a long winded title. Great Britain is similar but it doesnt include Northern Ireland.

Well "State" is a relative term. For instance the State of California.
Regardless, he didn't say "The State of England is a monster" -- he just said England. Does England exist or not exist as an entity? I think it's kind of obvious that it does, even if for the last 400 years it's as a separate part within a "whole".

    Simple answer.
Celtic should BAN anyone caught at games singing IRA songs, your a disgrace to this club and NO ONE in the club wants you. Why don't you all * off and STOP dragging us down with you.

You can still sing the celtic symphony but making a few adjustments. For example change Oh Ah Up the 'RA to... Oh Ah Samaras!! there we go problem solved :icon_mrgreen:

    Spot on mate.

Regarding the bit about your ancestry and beliefs, I Myself living in England and having a liking for Celtic along with my other club can attract questions from time to time.

Certain people believe that i shouldn't follow Celtic because im English, sorry but what's that all about?!

If only those people could read your post, it would change their bigoted and ancient views. It doesn't matter where were from or indeed what religion we believe in, the common cause is the support for the football club and what happens on the pitch.

Every Celtic fan i have ever spoken too has shown me great respect, most have found it amusing in the nicest sense that an Englishman one day decided to pick Celtic as his favourite Scottish club!

    All the best

    Hail Hail!

I don't have a problem with these songs in themselves but the fact is, if you sing these songs at matches, you are damaging our club and giving people license to tar us with the same brush as them across the water. Love Celtic? Steer clear of them!

The huns are far worse, small minded majority of fans, we have a minority but even then the songs the huns sing have far more hate and bitterness in them.
