Couple of films over the past couple of weeks

Sinners - A * version of From Dusk Til Dawn. Wont watch this again.
Weapons - Unbelievable bad. What is happening to modern horror. This guy is also giving me the fear about taking on the next Resident Evil film.
The Conjuring: Last Rites - Pretty decent. You know what you're getting with this franchise but i enjoyed it, even if there was nothing new.
Funhouse Massacre - An extremely fun and cheesy b-movie gorefest. Took a punt and it paid off.
Terrifier - Gore for the sake of gore, but it gets pass marks as its essentially a crowd-funded piece. Was alright.
The Ritual - Really enjoyed this. Supernatural, folk horror type of film.
Beast of War - Pretty bad shark movie despite apparent good reviews. The one plus point is the use of practical effects with the shark being a puppet as opposed to cgi.

Watched Beast of War the other night. Was bearable.

Watched Strange Darling again. Not many films I see these days that I go back to but thought this was great.

The Roses. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Coleman. Very good. Entertaining & hilarious from beginning to end ... never a dull moment. Exemplary acting and palpable chemistry from both leading actors (Cumberbatch & Coleman). 8.5/10. I would've given it 9 if not for the somewhat abrupt ending (which I get why they did and which still works).

    The Commitments.

It's been on my backlog for so long.

Good little film and it is what it is. My favourite part about the film, and possibly the most underrated aspect of it, are the snapshots of Dublin life at that time. They really captured a moment in time there.

Go track down The War of the Roses, from the late 1980s, with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. It is even better. Much darker and funnier, and considering those 3 had worked together a few times previously, especially Douglas and Turner going at each other so hard after all the adventure etc of Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, makes it so much more of a slap to the face. If you liked The Roses, which is basically a remake of that, definitely worth checking out the original.

Will do, mate. I actually only finished watching The Roses before dinner at around 1800 hrs earlier this evening (started watching it last night, but fell asleep). I then found out whilst eating my dinner that it is a remake of The War Of The Roses like you say. :50:

Ballad Of A Small Player. Solid film. Colin Farrell, as per, is excellent ... the guy can act and seldom picks bad movies. Defo in his element here. Had never heard of Macau prior to watching this movie. I'm very intrigued by it as it has a high HDI of 0.934, as calculated by its government and has the 3rd highest life-expectency globally. Territory is extremely urbanised, holding the status of the most densely populated on Earth. 2/3 of the total land area is built on land reclaimed from the sea. And The gambling industry of Macau is seven times larger than that of l vegas. CIty has one of the highest GDPs per capita and gdp cppp in the world.

    Edit: 8/10

Having been a huge fan of Leslie Nielsen films was kinda wary on new Naked Gun, but whilst Im not going to go overboard, for what it was I have to say it was 10/10 funny at moments.

I had hoped to have went to pictures to see it, but not sure how I woulda coped as I was absolute gutting myself at points in the film. The binoculars thing woulda had me kicked out a cinema Inwas that creased.

I'm looking forward to see this tonight with my misses. Looks like a great work of art and a mix of culture.

I generally feel the same way but I also reckon it's partly my own fault so to speak. I've just got high demands when it comes to acting and films these days can never hold my attention for long enough. There are some gems out there though and if I wasn't so ignorant I would consider them.

It's probably just that Western cinema is a little exhausted and we've had our time in the sun for now. We're running out of ideas for the most part. Most of the films coming out are sequels to a franchise that started 20+ years ago or rehashed ideas with a different cast.

Sinners being a poor man's From Dusk Till Dawn (to quote @Fontaine) highlights this, and I think Sinners is one of the better English language films this year (such is the dearth in quality films out there right now).

Films coming out in Asia / Africa / France are the most interesting right now and have been for years. New ideas, new perspectives, innovative ways of storytelling, and everything else you want in a film.

I agree that alot of ideas are played out. I do think though that there is still plenty of margin for already explored ideas to be done in a different way. Dusk till dawn was a classic vampire movie with good cinematography but its difficult to compare it with others like the lost boys which explored more interesting and complex ideas I thought. Vampire movies don't have to be linear, compared to zombies which is a trusted formula of seige usually and i'm quite happy if it stays that way as classics like dawn of the dead can only be replicated and never beaten. But i recognise also that its my personal taste, zombie siege movies give me comfort and unless its the same seige formula it will never satisfy my needs. I remember watching that film where a couples yacht overturns and they were eventually eaten by ocean sharks. It's still one of my favourites and i've forgotten the name but the acting was much like blair witch, more realistic than performance and I can appreciate that too.

That's the one. I remember walking past the cinema and i heard a couple talking about how bad they thought it was but i watched it on sky and thought it was good.

I saw 'sinners' tonight btw. Decent enough, I can see the dusk till dawn similarities quite strongly actually. Starts off quite slow but gets better.

I thought Open Water was decent for what it was.
I've tried to watch Sinners twice now, but can't get into it for some reason.
Too much alcohol possibly, coz pretty sure it's a good film from what Ive heard
