Bobby Clark

Bobby Clark, the former Liverpool midfielder, is set to join Celtic from RB Salzburg in January for £6million.

Clark is on loan at Derby County, where he has played ten times this season. However the 20-year-old is ready to make a permanent move to Scotland with Brendan Rodgers’ side, who are second in the Scottish Premiership table. Celtic’s first game in January is at home to Rangers on January 3.

Clark, the son of former Newcastle United midfielder Lee Clark, has become a regular at Pride Park for Derby, who are 20th in the Championship, since moving on loan from Salzburg in the summer

The midfielder made his debut for Liverpool at the age of 17, when he came on against Bournemouth in the Premier League, and later that season came on at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final to help Jürgen Klopp’s side beat Chelsea. He scored his first goal for the club in a 6-1 win in a Europa League victory over Sparta Prague.


He then moved to Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2024 for £10million, linking up with Klopp’s former assistant Pepijn Lijnders, who had left Anfield to take charge at the club. Lijnders had been a development coach under Rodgers at Liverpool, returned to the club under Klopp and took charge at RB Salzburg last year. He was sacked before joining Pep Guardiola as assistant at Manchester City in the summer.

Clark had signed a five-year contract at Salzburg but was keen to return to the UK with the prospect of regular football.

Now that looks like it will lead him to Glasgow and Celtic’s quest to win their fifth successive Scottish Premiership title, and European football under Rodgers in the Europa League.

 

Decent pedigree to be fair … anyone seen him play?

 

Don't know anything about him but the midfield really needs a refresh so all for midfield signings.

 

I saw him play against Burnley where he scored as well. He was decent in that game.

 

What type of midfielder though?

Absolutely not to * on Clarke, we need fresh faces and something new in the midfield but if he's just another type of the same 6 midfielders we already have, is there a need?

Need a proper defensive midfielder and/or an out and out 10.
Not another 8 we attempt to shoehorn to a 3 man midfield filled with 8s

Was extremely highly rated at Liverpool at one point..

Watched a couple of their youth champions league games as Doak was playing and he stood out..

Very technical. Creator type..

Can't remember if he was pacey or no though?

 

I think the board know they need to get business lined up BEFORE the window opens so the fans aren’t on their back straight away.

Doesn't look to have done anything in the 10 games for Derby either..

Need him to recapture that early promise and talent where he was getting minutes under Klopp at times as well..

Looking over Derby forum and fans dont want to lose him, but hes been played out of position. Think hes been playing on the wing but hes a much better number 10. I really hope we are not looking at him as a winger

 

watched a video there of him and he doesn’t shy out a tackle which I like , also think his stats would be better if the Salzburg players where better at finishing, has played in some big games fo someone still fairly young so would be all for this , I would see him more of a Bernardo/hatate replacement

 

What we are paying for is potential. It's a sizable sum but encouraging at least that we seem willing to be taking that kind of risk.

Is he more an offensive minded midfielder?

 

It’s all in preparation for Klopp coming to replace Rodgers like he did at Liverpool. We’ll be signing Robertson next.

I would agree but not for this board. Well worth selling out on a 20 year old talent even if his career seems to be stalking a bit.

It's October FFS, so it's likely rubbish, but if true that gives us at least 3 months to * it right up.
2.9 months of monitoring, followed by 3 days of panic, lowballing and then losing player elsewhere.
