Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "We need to improve the squad. There's been clarity around that for a long time. Supporters see that. We do in football. We need to improve.

"This is a performance club. That starts on the field. You do that by getting the very best players you possibly can to allow you to perform. To play a style that excites supporters.

"Hopefully between now and the end of the season, the club will get that and that will support us.

"It's not my decision in the end. I can prepare the team, the staff, and the players that are here who have been fantastic in pre-season. We are all clear on where we need to improve, and for whatever reason we haven't been able to do that.

"We're in this position, we have to accept that and not dwell on it, and try and come through it."

I would rather Yang out wide than Idah up top and Maeda wide, at least Yang tries things and has a bit of heart, far more than Idah has shown.

The board have been a shambles in regards to transfers this Summer with the exception of Tierney (although even then the board get no credit for that as it was Tierneys personal decision to come back due to his emotional ties)

However, that side we played tonight haven't spent anything like we have on transfer fees over the last few seasons, they've never spent £10M on a striker and £11M on a midfielder, they don't pay guys £40K a week like we do for Jota, KT, CCV and Cal either

We absolutely swamp their financial reach, their signings this Summer have been free agents and loans, so for as much as the board have a lot to answer for, Brendan still should have been able to field a side capable of trouncing that lot, I mean ffs, that side lost 2-0 away to KuPS from Finland less than 4 weeks ago!

Expect to hear Rodgers using the type of language that would suggest he is beginning to distance himself from the club, keeping his own counsel until his departure at the end of the season.

He probably want's to leave right now but will be important to him to complete the 3 seasons to finish his chapter as Celtic manager.

Such a pity this is the way things are panning out, all could've been so different.

Feel sorry for him as he clearly has ambitions for the club far beyond the board and hes been left hanging by a shambolic performance from the board this Summer.

But we have been unconvincing as a team for some time now and I dont know if he can fully escape blame for that.

Concerned Celtic boss Brendan Rodgersreckons it's normally the MANAGER that is shown the door when fans chant 'sack the board'

It was a tough evening for the Scottish Premiership champions as the Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty held the Hoops to a goalless draw the first leg of the Champions League playoff.

The Celtic fans vented their anger at the Parkhead decision-makers after a sluggish transfer window going into the £40million shoot-out - with chants of 'sack the board' heard ringing out from the stands.

he club now face the prospect of a 7000-mile round trip for the second leg as they look to return to the league phase of Europe's elite competition.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Rodgers was asked if the board would listen to him and the support: "I don't know, I can only concentrate on the team that we have currently. I can't get too distracted by what I don't have...

Pressed on if he understands what the fans are saying, he went on: "Yeah, absolutely. But sack the board?

"I don't know any board that gets sacked, it's usually the manager. At any club I ever see it's the manager that gets sacked, not the board.

"But listen, we have to go away and analyse tonight and see where we could be better.

The guys at the top end of the pitch are giving their all, but like I have said many times - to progress at this level, we need to have more - it's as simple as that.

'But, we won't have that for Tuesday and our concentration is now for Saturday with Livingston to freshen up, with a mammoth journey, and hopefully it ends with the Champions League league phase.

As much as I don't disagree with that in the sense none of them really at the moment represent value for money we can't use that as a stick to beat him with they all played a big part in a double and progress in the CL last season. My big concern around him coming back was recruitment but again that's not a reason to not back him the board will have been fully aware of his record and how it ended first time here with McGinn and the rest. He came out a few weeks back and made the comments about progression or standing still it's mental that any manager has to say that it should be a given and I would loved to have stood still we have absolutely regressed

    Pretty much how I feel.

Two things can be true. Rodgers is quite right in that we should be bringing in better players. And I feel he is in a very awkward position due to the boards incompetence. But he should also be capable of getting a tune out of the players he has signed to beat a team like that at home.

He's far from blameless in all of this tbh and has gone self-preservation mode again. The ego clash between him and PL is an embarrassment and the fact that snidey * is even still involved at board room level after the COVID season is a joke.

Someone mentioned it on here that getting Mark Lawwell the sack probably ended any cooperation Rodgers had with the board and it makes sense. Completely unprofessional way to carry on, like actually pathetic that two blokes not liking each other is causing chaos across the club.

I don't get folk having a go at him we saw what he can do in Europe last year what was he meant to do tonight every single option in a forward position is awful and Maeda is playing with the handbrake on currently as well.

He is the board's human shield. Rodgers is as * off as the rest of us with the recruitment he said as much a couple of weeks back but he still has a squad to keep happy in the meantime. He is asked in every single interview about transfers and short of calling Lawwell and Nicholson a pair of helmets I don't get what folk want him to say.

I agree it's no reason not to give him what he needs, just our anger at the board does let Rodgers off the hook sometimes. His transfer record is * hoaching and always has been. This spell with us just gives more evidence of that.

He was brill in his interview tonight, gave all the correct answers and let people know but not answering some questions that he’s being shafted. Well I mean he and us are being shafted.

I said it another thread but

vs Midtjyland our back 4 was Ralston Bitton Welsh Taylor (Murray came on when Bitton seen red)

vs Cluj we seen McGregor play LB

    vs Astana O'Connell played CB

And the almost annual outing of Bitton at CB

The board set us up to fail in these qualifiers it feels like sometimes we get through in spite of the board and it's genuinely baffling considering how much the * like money

What??? Did you see the injuries we had tonight and the purely basic standard of player to work with???? Get a grip.
