Inverness hold talks with Celtic over cooperation agreement

INVERNESS Caledonian Thistle have been in talks with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic regarding a possible cooperation agreement between the two clubs.



Caley Thistle interim chief executive Charlie Christie confirmed they have held discussions with Celtic regarding loaning players between the two clubs throughout the season.

He also confirmed they have held talks with two other unnamed clubs about entering a cooperation agreement, but said no deals have been finalised.

The cooperation system which has been introduced in Scotland this season, provides greater flexibility to the existing domestic loan quotas. It enables players in the key ‘transition phase’ of 16-21, who are eligible to represent the Scotland national teams, to join a lower-league club but be able to move between the parent and cooperation club throughout the season to increase playing time.


A number of lower league clubs, including Elgin City, have entered cooperation agreements with Premiership teams to loan players this season.

Christie confirmed they met Celtic’s Professional Player Pathway Manager Shaun Maloney who was at the club to hold talks.


He said Celtic were impressed with Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s approach to football and that they have also held talks with other clubs.

Regarding cooperation agreements, Christie said: “We have been offered it by two or three clubs. Shaun Maloney drove up from Glasgow and said to me that they had done the data on the way Caley Thistle play.

“He said that we are only one of two clubs in League One that they would put players to and that is compliment to Scott Kellacher. Celtic is one we are looking at.”

Christie said however they would want to make sure that any players that would arrive at Inverness would be good enough to play in the team.

He said: “When you look at the quality we have in our team, it is like us loaning players out to the Highland League, they need to be playing.

Are we able to have a cooperation agreement with one club in each division?

 

Think so Huns have done that with Stirling Albion Alloa and Raith I think we’ve done it with Ayr and looking at 2 more could do worse than EK in league 2 Si Ferry there and play good football

 

Kind of makes the whole B team set up defunct if we are going to have multiple lower league clubs lined up to play our youth players.

Id prefer that in any case. Any player with a realistic chance of playing for celtic should be able to cut it at a low professional level. But its doesnt feel like a very joined up development system.

Would rather Hamilton to be honest, keep the youngsters closer to Glasgow than away up North to fecking Inverness.

Actually for me it brings more to the B team, the lowland is the start, then you go up the leagues as you age and improve.

 

I'd take any team up for it, not all will want to do it.

 

But unless the B team is going to be an under 16 set up, how far off the level of celtic would you need to be in order to not be able to cut it at championship or league 1 level and need to be playing stirling uni and civil service strollers to develop? It feels almost impossible that a 18-19 year old will go from lowland level to celtic first team within a few years if they arent already good enough to play for ICT

 

We should try cap the age at 17/18 max for players playing in the lowland league for us. Anyone older has to be loaned out

 

We announced Ayr as it officially 1st August.

Reading what they’ve said, they asked, we looked at it, said some platitudes to them and didn’t do it.

We would have looked at loads of different options, but Broony being at Ayr made it the best of them. He’s showing promise as a manager, plays a decent style and if we want somebody to trust to guide young players who hope to play for us a recently retired captain with over 600 appearances makes more sense than anything.

I like that Maloney scouted out every option clearly though. Ayr could also have been the lazy choice not much thought put in.

 

Just great that they spend time making friends instead of spending time filling up empty positions on the field.

 

Yeah it’s actually great to hear we’re using data and analysis…and also maloney is going to visit and meet them. Not just an old jobs for the boys case.

good to see and I’m also so so surprised we managed to get Maloney to do this role. I’d imagine he had a many offers on the table for different roles elsewhere within football

I think we can have an agreement with a team in each league though so Inverness is still a possibility. I suppose if the teams end up in the same league we would need to drop one.

 

Given teams getting promoted or relegated you would imagine there would be a clause that would cover that situation if it meant 2 teams we had an agreement with ended up in the same division for the following season. Likely we have time frames as well in place on these agreements on how long they are that would require renewals to keep them going longer term.
