Didn't mention copy and paste. The lady doth protest too much.

He’s getting more rests than ever with a week or two off here and there not playing for Scotland.

I always think after a game he’s rested it interrupts his flow and doesn’t help. Scott Brown was the same way, skip a game to rest his legs next game he looked worse off for it.

Getting his rest the international breaks is fine for me. As long as when he is playing and not being rested he is fit, we have had the habit of him playing through injury, us 3-0 up at halftime and not taking him off.

If you like that kinda insight I can also tell you that within the club there's a feeling that Kieran Tierney is a really good footballer and our next captain.

The international breaks obviously help but there were one or two occasions where he looked jaded last season. No reason for him to play the full 90 against Falkirk, for example. I do think his game time being managed is important going forward.

The good thing is it’s well known he lives a strict lifestyle in terms of getting to his bed early and resting properly to prepare himself.

He can catch Broony in Appearance list if he completes this season and halfway through next season but needs 5 1/2 seasons to catch Cesar

Larsson was the same. O'Neill talked about having to manage it I'm pretty sure.

It's admirable but also not really his call and does have potential negative consequences.

As someone else said he’s the type of player that needs regular games. There has been periods when that’s been to his physical detriment but now being out of the international scene playing week in and week out for Celtic isn’t an issue - he’s just turned 32 no 36.

The captain shouldn’t ever be rested? :97:

In the modern game, every player needs rotated out every now and then. We can have crazy periods where we play 3 games in 8 days, or worse.

    That’s why you have vice-captains…

I think captains in the modern game have a lot less influence but he sets the standard everyday in training as everyone says.

Of course. That still doesn’t mean he can’t ever be rested. Every team needs multiple leaders-by-example.

I’d not rest him personally unless we are cruising but you don’t win as much as us if there no leaders.

We've become far too dependent on Calmac, even more so in the absence of a #6 since Broon.

We have nowhere near enough big personalities and 'captains' on the pitch.
Calmac has fallen into that role (and done very well) in the absence of anyone else being remotely capable.
We should have 5 or 6 or more natural 'captains' - think back to MoN teams.

Yes, captains should lead by example on the pitch - but not only that, they should be big personalities, constantly demand the highest standards, be the managers right hand and carry that aura great Celtic captains have had.

Calmac is a much better player than captain (not unlike Paul McStay) that's ended up having to play out of position at #6 for last several years.
He has (admirably) papered over multiple cracks and issues in our team and recruitment and has become a lazy excuse for not investing at #6.

Another year will pass and he'll still play almost every game, out of position - until age and number of games catch up with him and the club only then wonder what to do.

Think it's a bit harsh to say we don't have any other leaders in the current team. CCV, AJ, Schmeichel and Tierney are all the type of guys that could be very good captains as well as leading by example like Cal. We are over reliant on him at times but then he also takes on that responsibility fully as well and that's a credit to him, he's one of us after all and loves playing for Celtic.

I do agree things are improving now on the potential captains, but when Calmac took the armband and over the last few seasons, we've had virtually nothing.
I've nothing but good things to say about Calmac, but he's been taken advantage of and not given the support around him he needs - you saw the pressure he was under in the cup final.

I agree. I think we miss another leader in midfield, but the backline is filled with leadership.

Nygren might be that. Has his head screwed on and was vice captain at Nordsjaelland I believe

Precisely, so we can more than afford to preserve our captain’s fitness every now and then.

Unbelievable. Am I right in thinking clubs back then didn’t play as many games as we do now? I know champions league was a smaller competition so less games to the final.
