Played for Genoa V Napoli yesterday and did well despite the 2-2 draw, I thought he was in Romania?

In fairness to the guy, he is (or at least was, considering it’s been a while since I’ve seen him play) a decent enough goalkeeper. In fact, he’d still probably do a job for most of the top sides in our league, to be honest. For us, he was more in the mould of a traditional backup goalie (i.e. a steady pair of hands who would probably be the other domestic side’s no.1) and less of Sinisalo (i.e. a genuine successor) but it still feels like he could’ve had a more productive time here.

Not that I think he was ever really going to be given regular, or even semi-regular, game time, but his shenanigans on the Australian tour seemingly killed whatever scant prospects he had here dead. It was just a bit of a silly way to carry on, especially for a guy that’s never really had proper run or established himself outside of his time with Dundee United.

That Eddie Pearson from Celtic Underground said we were warned off signing Siegrest

That’s interesting, I’ve never heard about that before. I take it he’s suggesting there were issues while he was at United then?

I was watching that Napoli V Genoa game and noticed the name Siegrist on the back of his top and was thinking did we have a keeper called that, shows how little he played. Had to google him to make sure it was him who was with us :56:

Former Celtic goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist has lifted the lid on how Ange Postecoglou convinced him to join the club.

The goalkeeper was brought in on a free transfer from Dundee United in the summer of 2022.

Siegrist went on to make just two competitive appearances for the Parkhead club. He now finds himself on loan at Serie A side Genoa from FC Rapid of Romania.

Recently speaking on The Bondi Podcast, he opened up about his chat with Postecoglou that convinced him to join Celtic.

"I had this famous phone call with Ange Postecoglou," said Siegrist.

When he calls, you say yes. It's one of those, when he speaks, you just buy into it. He's a fantastic coach, a fantastic motivator. As soon as he starts speaking, the deal's done.

"He said, 'Look, you're not guaranteed anything, but, you know, if you put the work in, I guarantee you will get an opportunity'.

"He's going to try and make you a better player, and he said to me, 'Look, you can go sign for another team, play another 100 games, or you can come here, learn something, develop yourself, and I was like, 'Yeah, sign me up'.'

"There's an expectancy of delivering for this club [Celtic], and I wanted to be part of it."

That's what I thought but Siegrist signed 21st June and Ange 10th June so it just about fits.

I’m convinced he was a signing we done so the Huns didn’t, he was behind Bain under Ange by the end up anyway. A worse keeper, but Ange was all about attitude.

Hart talked about a phonecall with Ange to sign… I don’t know, Siegrest just seems like a * to me adding all that up together:56:

I pretty much agree. He obviously did * all at us but it's possible Ange did talk to him. He was a decent keeper at Utd and there was one or 2 opportunities to impress but he obviously couldn't be arsed.

He was better than Bain ability wise anyway no question, Bain had a great attitude though and that was always highlighted about him. Ange would have had him ahead due to that. Siegrest at us my abiding memory was him on instagram in Australia photos of him and his Mrs

Former Celtic goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist claims that there were 'things going on' internally during his time at the club.

The Swiss stopper revealed that he was getting a different message from Brendan Rodgers than the board.

Brought in by Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2022, after Rodgers came in the door a year later, he told Siegrist that he wasn't in his plans.

As a result, the 33-year-old wanted to depart.

"I had an offer from a team that I was willing to go to," said Siegrist on The Bondi Podcast. "They said yes initially, then they changed their mind. Then I was stuck with the transfer window shutting.

"I felt like I needed to play to get my confidence back.

"In January... I had another team going for a league in another country, a top division, playing European football. I was on holiday, actually. Everything was agreed. Then I found out that Celtic hadn't responded to that team in four weeks.

"I did everything, pushed everything. I spoke to Stevie [Woods]. He said, 'In January, you can go'.

"I spoke to the new team, spoke to everyone. It was a done deal. I was ready to pack up.

"Some people on the Celtic board just didn't respond to any of the enquiries from the other team."

When asked why the board went silent over a move, Siegrist simply replied, "Good question."

"There was never a problem between me and Brendan Rodgers," the goalkeeper continued. "It was always very respectful. But there were things going on internally.

"The message I got from the manager wasn't the same that I got from the board.

"That was very frustrating because all I wanted to do was play. I was denied that opportunity twice. It felt like a lost year.

"It wasn't right the way it was handled.

"It just felt like a kick in the teeth."

Siegrist now plays his football for Genoa. He is on loan at the Serie A club from FC Rapid of Romania

Just shows it's fully the board that's the problem.

In every way mate. He was deadwood needing shifted at that point. We know we’re stingy with spending money, but shifting money on the books not wanted we’re equally as incompetent.

    That’s * hoarder behaviour.
