Calvin Stengs appears to be sidelined at Feyenoord. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder and right winger didn't play for the Rotterdam side in their first two official matches and was twice kept on the bench for 90 minutes by Robin van Persie. A move could be an option, and according to SciSports data, Celtic seems a good solution.

Stengs joined Feyenoord two years ago, after transferring €6 million to OGC Nice. The Dutch international excelled during the 2023/24 season, playing a key role with 8 goals and 17 assists in 43 appearances. Last season, Stengs was plagued by injuries and only played fifteen matches, scoring once and providing four assists.

Feyenoord made a splash this summer, bringing in numerous reinforcements for Stengs's ideal positions. They signed Sem Steijn and Luciano Valente as attacking midfielders, and the Rotterdam club also acquired Gonçalo Borges and Gaoussou Diarra, both of whom can play as right wingers. Three of the four signings have already played time this season, while Stengs had to watch from the bench for 90 minutes against both Fenerbahçe (2-1 win) and NAC Breda (2-0 win).

Why should Calvin Stengs go to Celtic?

There was already cautious talk this summer about Stengs's future at Feyenoord, which was reportedly open to a move. According to data from SciSports, Celtic seems to offer a solution. The data analysis firm's Career Advice Tool shows that Stengs has a Club Fit rating of 87 with the Scots. The playmaker would be a perfect fit for Brendan Rodgers's approach to play and also has the prospect of significant playing time at Celtic.

Could be a shrewd signing, fell out of favour at Feyenoord but was class at AZ and started well for them.

Don't think he's that quick mind you, and he's better in the 10 role rather than out on the wing.

I thought we had a rumour there but this is essentially a data scouting tool suggesting he would be a good fit for us.

Celtic have reached out to Calvin Stengs’ representatives to explore a potential move for the Feyenoord winger.

There’s been no direct approach to Feyenoord so far, but that’s normal at this stage. Clubs often speak to a player’s camp first to find out if a deal is possible before opening talks with their club. It’s a sign Celtic are seriously considering Stengs, not just testing the waters

As CeltsAreHere reported on Sunday night, the club made contact last week to check the player’s interest in a switch to Glasgow.

Stengs hasn’t played a single minute for Feyenoord this season. He’s been on the bench for all four of their matches, including two league games and two Champions League qualifiers. Most recently, he was left out of the action in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Excelsior.

Although he’s mostly been used as an attacking midfielder recently, with 13 of his 16 appearances last season in that position, Stengs has played the bulk of his career on the wing. Out of 253 senior appearances, 169 have come as a winger, with 158 of those on the right side. That makes him a clear option to replace Nicolas Kühn, who left Celtic for Como earlier this summer.

One concern will be his injury record. Stengs has missed 41 matches over the past two seasons. That might give Celtic pause, but when fit, he’s shown his quality. Celtic fans saw it first-hand in 2023, when he scored against the Hoops in the Champions League. His stoppage-time first-half strike gave Feyenoord the lead in a 2-0 win in Rotterdam.

Last summer, Charlotte FC agreed a deal with Feyenoord worth around €8 million, which is roughly £6.75 million, but the move reportedly collapsed after Charlotte concerns over a Stengs knee problem. If Celtic do move forward, they would likely need to offer a similar fee.

For now, the ball is rolling. Whether it leads to a full transfer remains to be seen, but Stengs is firmly on Celtic’s radar.

Given his injury history doesn't look like a good move to me. Especially if he failed a medical over a move in the summer.
