Their recruitment has been incredible if they then go get him. I was super impressed by their centre backs last night. Huge, fast and can ping a diagonal ball or fast pass through the lines.

They look good alright. It's all about ambition, I don't think we have a problem identifying players. Our board is the issue, they push our players out the door as soon as moderate money comes up, no plan to replace them - just get the money in. When it comes to buying players we baulk at what the money is. It was widely reported we were pursuing the likes of Jashari, Kvistgarden, Pavlovic in recent years - we baulked at what we could have got them for then which was would have actually been very shrewd deals if we met the asking price (which we could have afforded) at the time - instead we walked away and their market value rose and rose.

We have the same problem with youth players. We have lost Vata, Doak, Dembele, Cummings and Kelly in recent seasons after all had made their 1st team debuts. Why? Because we are tied to a small wage structure for youth players. Doak was clearly a generational talent, we grew up a Celtic fan, he made his 1st team debut at 15/16, he was brought up to the 1st team - the pathway was there to get the football but we insisted no not making him a serious offer. He went to Liverpool and has just been sent out on loan there and has played his football at a level not any higher than he would have at Celtic. I don't believe our youth team players are leaving us for footballing reasons. They are leaving us for financial reasons. How much do we think Liverpool offered Doak? Or West Ham Cummings? Maybe 10-15k a week max I'd say. That's about 500-750k a year, £2-3m spread over 4 years on a 4 year deal. Should we not be investing that in our top youth prospects? We invest more than that in your Tilios, Holms. Kwons etc. I firmly believe all those players would still be at Celtic if we made them decent contract offers.

Think you’re spot on with nearly all of that but I’d disagree on the youth aspect. It is quite a risk to pay them more. Look at Kelly and Dembele (he now looks okay at QPR) but say we give them a 4 year contract at 10k and they then didn’t fulfil their potential. It could create a scenario where other youths (who believe they’re as good. Which most young footballers will do) will demand that figure to sign on each time they turn pro.

apparently we did push the boat out with doak too but sometimes we just can’t offer what English prem teams could give away without a blink. Look at Chelsea, imagine what they’re outlay is for every youth/u19 player that have is. Be crazy in comparison

 

maybe out of our price range as not sure what st. Gallen would want for him. But really coming into his early potential now and started the season on fire. If we wanted him we’d have to get in quick before he moves back to a top 5 league.

 

Doak is apparently on 15k at Liverpool. He's a generational talent. 15k a week over 4 years is a 3m outlay over that 4 years, its a smaller investment than we've made on Tilio. Take the Kelly example, what do we think he's on down south? Maybe 5k a week, were Celtic to have matched that offer, it's a 1m outlay over 4 years. Surely its worth that risk? These are not vast sums of money we are talking about for a club like us. We are consistently hemmoragaing our best youth players because we won't pay them a moderate wage. We are losing out them to clubs like Watford, Brest, Milwall who don't even have a fraction of our budget.

How much do you think Borland is earning at Villa?

 

I think we should be keeping a close eye on that Finlay Robertson at Dundee, was all over the huns today and is supposedly their best player.

Not one for this window, but if he keeps it up id be looking at him come January.

 

Thought he made a number of very poor decisions late on. Played the wrong pass a number of times when Dundee were on the break.

 

I think, like Dundee themselves, he got knackered late on.

Not the finished product and im not saying we go for him this window, just someone to keep an eye on.

 

I don’t disagree it’s worth the risk. It’s definitely feasible we give that amount to a few youth players and ALL soon expect to be paid close to that amount.

Aidan Borland left us for Villa a couple of years ago, was highly rated and has made his senior debut for them in the League Cup. We have another Borland lad on the books currently too.

 

I wouldn’t know how much he’d be on then mate. I know there’s a few lads that have left like Adam to Man City, Hepburn to Bayern etc. who have done absolutely nothing so I think there is a huge element of risk to giving these youngsters £££.

although you never know whether say Hepburn had stayed with us, would his career be different? I guess we’ll never know really

 

Agent said after how we treated him in 2019 he would never do business with celtic again.
