Celtic is delighted to confirm that it has entered into a new co-operation agreement with Ayr United FC, which will allow increased playing opportunities for a number of promising young Celtic players who are coming through the ranks at Celtic.

The Cooperation System was voted through by clubs in Scotland recently.

The new system aims to provide greater flexibility to the previous domestic loan system by enabling players in the key ‘transition phase’ of 16-21, who are eligible to represent the Scotland national teams, to join a lower-league club but be able to move between the parent and cooperation club throughout the season to increase playing time.

Jude Bonnar and Kyle Ure have moved to Ayr, joining forces with Ayr United Manager and Celtic Legend Scott Brown, and we will aim to create other opportunities for our young players going forward in association with the Somerset Park club.

Celtic believes this approach can be hugely important in the development of young players, particularly in assisting young players in the transition into first teams from academies.

Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers said: “We think this new arrangement with Ayr United will prove to be very useful to both clubs and of course to the young players who we are looking to support and develop.

"A number of clubs are using these new agreements and I think they have the potential to produce really positive results.

"I know Scott and his staff will provide our young players with a fantastic environment over the next period and this will be crucial in their development and their transition to our first team.

Bonnar looked a bit tactically unaware, but I suppose that's what this loan is all about, get him used to playing mens football. Ure took up some good positions, few nice passes and a clever tactical foul.

Think you are allowed 3 different agreements. 1 club in each division. Might not be much in league 2 but setting up with a club in league 1 would be better than lowland league so hopefully we have another partnership in the pipeline

A rare good idea from the powers that be. Gotta be better than playing against non league sides for the youngsters.

IMHO we and anyone else who can should be allowed put their B team in the league system proper with the prevision that a clubs B team cannot rise to the same level as their first team. But no question this is at least a step in the right direction.

I didn't know that. I thought it was just straight up one agreement. But if you can do one in each division that would indeed be a good idea and certainly better than the lowland league nonsense.

    From the Celtic Way

Progress so far and what we're hearing
It remains to be seen whether co-op agreements, introduced by the Scottish FA for the new season, will bear fruit and help thwart the youth crisis in our game. The proof of concept will not become apparent until it's bedded and produces results, or not, over time.

To many, it was no surprise that Celtic signed their first agreement with Ayr United, given the obvious Scott Brown connection. Initially, however, the club did intend to join up with Queen's Park. After those plans were scuppered, eyes turned to the coast.

Sources close to the academy set-up have suggested that Maloney has made a strong early impression in his new role at Celtic, and The Celtic Way understands he was a key figure in sealing the Ayr deal. He personally visited Somerset Park, took in first-team training, and attended their game away to Arbroath last Friday night.

Ayr drew 1-1 in the northeast, with two young Celts, Jude Bonnar and Kyle Ure, both featuring for The Honest Men, the former from the start and the latter from the bench. Both players are at Somerset on co-op agreements, so can be called back to Celtic at any point throughout the campaign, should the club desire. A third young player will soon also join Ayr from Celtic. Brendan Rodgers is finalising his first team plans for the new campaign before sanctioning a move.
