Celtic faced Estrela da Amadora at Benfica’s training campus today (July 12) and, despite an intense and hard-working performance from the Bhoys, they suffered their first defeat of pre-season, losing 3-2 to the Portuguese side.

The match marked the first appearance in a Celtic jersey for Kieran Tierney since his return to the club this summer, whilst Benjamin Nygren also got his first minutes as a Celtic player, playing the full 45 minutes of the second half.

In spite of the disappointing result, however, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reflected on the match as another positive pre-season step when he spoke to Celtic TV at full time.

“It was a really good exercise for us,” Brendan said. “ We’re only a couple of weeks in and there were some good moments, some not so good, young players getting opportunities, some players playing their first minutes of pre-season.

“We’ll get sharper. The guys have had a heavy week, so they were maybe a wee bit leggy today.

“But it’s that point in the season where you have to push and get through that, that’s all about building your fitness.

‘The guys will always look to play our game model, to press and to play, and we did that.’

“We had some really good moments, the goals were excellent. And then we got caught out, especially in the third goal, just pressing at the wrong moment.

“But all that comes with the evolution and understanding of how we play.”

Another pesser today....he thinks there's a lot of work going on :39:
Also doesn't leave us in any doubt where he is on improvements needed - for umpteenth time.
    Over you you, blazers

"I think there's work going on behind the scenes. It's clear we need to improve the squad. A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, there are loads of names floating about."

Rodgers said: "I think the positions you've mentioned, we're clear that we need to improve our frontline.

"We lost Kyogo in January and another player with Nicolas gone. That's a lot of goals that's gone out of the team.

"So for us, we need to strengthen that area of the field. But the guys back home are working hard on that."

"The pre-season is always to assess. We know the model here at the club is always to improve them.

"Sometimes that means they come in and you assess and look, and look to see what's right for the development of them and the team.

"That's what I'm about, getting a collection of individual players that I can see development and improvement in.

"If they are going to be close to the first-team, they'll stay and do that. If not, we may feel they need to go out.

"Ina's that example. I just wanted to get the chance to see him and we'll continue to do that.

"But we know in the background that if we need to move on that position, that if we need to move on that position, that's something that we will be ready to do."

Brendan Rodgers insists he won’t let speculation surrounding his future become a distraction after holding crunch talks with Dermot Desmond.

The Celtic boss revealed he held face-to-face discussions with the club's principal shareholder over the summer as rumours swirl over whether he’ll extend his stay beyond the end of the campaign.

Rodgers is entering the final 12 months of his three-year contract and has yet to indicate whether he's ready to stick around for longer

And the Northern Irishman kept his cards close to his chest when asked about his summit with Desmond.

He said: "Yes, we spoke with all the guys. I had a meal and a chat around a number of things. So, yes, I had a nice meet.

"We touched base on it. But it is primarily just a chat around things. Like I said, it's still a long, long way out.

But my focus is really just now getting the team ready and making us really competitive and exciting for this coming season.

"But a year's a long, long way out."

Supporters are desperate for answers but Rodgers insists the looming uncertainty won’t weigh on his mind.

He said: "No, not at all. I think that I have to earn my place here at Celtic.

"And that's what I felt when I came back. And it's no different.

"It wouldn't matter to me if it was one year, one week or ten years

I'd be super motivated to progress the team and keep us moving forward.

It's not really a long way out.

Obviously playing coy there. You'd imagine that meal was primarily about his future.

Don't think his contract situation is as worrying as is made out tbh. Aye, ideally they get it sorted soon but I don't think it significantly affects things on the park, or in terms of recruitment for that matter.

Desmond will provide his backing for this season regardless what happens at the end of it.

Oh no a media circus! That's definitely worse than losing our manager halfway through preseason.

He's been given money to spend that no other manager has since MON. They let him spend £9m on Idah when nobody else in the world thought that was good business. They let him break the transfer record for Engels. At some point he has to take some accountability for the signings he makes. I'd like to see the board do more too but after spending a combined £26m on those two and Trusty I'd be a bit weary of giving him big money to spend on "quality" players too personally.

To be honest, I’ve pretty much always expected that he’d do his three years and that would be it - maybe with a slight chance of an extra year if things were going exceptionally well. Given some of the alleged motivations for his return, he’s obviously not going to want to risk things potentially turning sour as they did last time around.

A strong final season and then a graceful exit at the end of the contract is probably ideal from his perspective; and, at the risk of being controversial, it’s maybe not the worst outcome all things considered.

Im sure his plan is to try get back the premier league ultimately. Realistically I dont think the board throwing an extra 20 mil on transfers to him will change that. I think they probably know that as well.

The uncertainty over his future will feed into the players, as it does the fans. Just gives me an uneasy feeling about the coming season, wish we had some kind of clarity on it all.

Fecking Groundhog Day with the same pish comments "lots of work going behind the scenes", "need to improve the squad" "strengthen areas" and my favourite "the guys back home are working hard". FFS, (and I know there's still a few weeks left to do business) why are we always having to put up with this * year after fecking year

Brendan's length of stay will depend entirely on this window.
The blazers must realise that and show the ambition he has been calling for the last 3 windows.
Or perhaps they don't see him as more important than the 'model'?

Clock is ticking Peter, ante up - or lose an elite manager, and face the fans wrath.

I like Rodgers and I hope he stays beyond the three years.

But hes left us once for the premier league and its naive to think he wouldnt do so again. The board arent going to throw out their model to satisfy a manager that they know will likely want to return to the premier league when the opportunity arises. I would say they have shown a willingness to stretch it though in the last couple of windows.

We spent close to 40M in the last couple of windows. That includes breaking our transfer record and stretching our wage cap to secure Tierney.
