Newcastle United are tracking Scottish Premiership youngster James Wilson - with the striker's name cropping up after a number of spying missions north of the border.

Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle have stepped up their recruitment drive in Scotland with trips to Dundee United, Motherwell, Aberdeen and St Mirren in recent weeks.

The 18-year-old has starred for Heart of Midlothian this season and netted five times in the Scottish top-flight, alerting a number of Premier League sides, including the Magpies. Edinburgh-born Wilson burst on to the scene north of the border last season and has been a regular for Hearts this term

Sources at Tynecastle suggest that Newcastle are keen on the teenager who has scored eight career goals at senior level. Wilson has already been capped by Scotland and featured in the 3-0 defeat against Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

He has a market value of around £1million and has been checked out by both Old Firm clubs Rangers and Celtic. Newcastle are trying to bolster their back-up squad and Eddie Howe is keen on first-team ready youngsters to stake a claim next season

Wilson and Miller are the two outstanding young Scottish players within reach. Sign both.

I'd be tempted to loan him back to Hearts but he could contribute in our squad as is. He's great at dropping a bit deeper and linking play, got some great technical ability.

When i've seen him playing I haven't really been impressed, never seen him doing very much on the park. He is also built like a young boy who wouldn't probably be near first team football yet for us.

For £1million it's not much of a gamble but would probably be a couple of year before he got a game.

Danger would also be if we signed him and loaned him back to Hearts for 2 season say, would they even play him, it's not like he plays for them now as he's one of their best players, he doesn't make that much of an impact. If we signed him and loaned him back they'd probably use him as a sub. They're maybe playing him hoping someone buys him. Same for other teams in the League if we loaned him to Motherwell or St Mirren im not sure he would play there either.

Nowhere near good enough for us..

    Doesn't look very mobile
Doesn't look very good building/linking the play
    Doesn't look particularly strong

Infact the 2 or 3 times ive seen him, he's missed sitters and looked out his depth..

Aye reminds you of that Callum Elliott or whoever from Hearts about 15 year ago, similar skinny, lanky, slow, soft young forward who I think they also played since he was about 16/17 and tried to hype up who amounted to nothing and never really did anything for them either.

Not convinced he has any of the attributes needed to develop into a regular for us.

Miller, aye. Hickey you could also see it, even. This lad doesn't stand out to me.

In saying that he's only had about 10 shots on target and scored 5.

We have been trying to sign him for a while now. Around the time we lost Doak to Liverpool we tried to sign up 6 young players from across Scotland, Wilson was one of them but he opted to stay at Hearts as his chances of getting to the first team were higher.

We actually only managed to get one of the 6 to sign. I think it was someone from Partick.

Not surprised, probably saw Hickey and thought yeah why not.

I don't rate him tbh, but he's young still and it's not bad returns for an 18 year old really. If he was to sign I think we should be loaning him out instantly to make sure he gets game time. Someone in our league would take him.

I agree, unless an 18 year old was an exceptional talent going to play first team football straight away, I wouldn’t advise any youth players to be signing for us.

It would be a gamble but that actually should be a USP of ours given our domestic dominance, that we could afford to give a very young talent immediate first team football but we haven’t really done that with anyone since Frimpong.
