Brendan Rodgers has delivered an injury update on Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The veteran keeper, 38, sustained a shoulder injury while playing for Denmark against Portugal on Sunday evening.

The Danes lost 5-2 in their Nations League tie, after leading 1-0 from the first leg in Copenhagen.

Speculation has been rife in the days that followed, with suggestions that Schmeichel could be out longer term, rather than just a few weeks.

Now, Rodgers has attempted to clear the situation up, as he spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow's Scottish Premiership game against Hearts.

He said: "Well, we don't know how long he'll be out. We're still waiting to hear on that.

"He's obviously got some issues with his shoulder.

"I spoke to him the other day and he's okay. He's obviously disappointed that they lost their second game, but in the main he's okay."

Asked directly if his season could be over, the Northern Irishman replied: "I don't know. We're just waiting to hear back on the scan."

On some of the criticism and personal comments the keeper has had to face regarding his weight, Rodgers added: "One, I haven't seen it. I don't know what was said.

"All I know with Kasper is, and the reason I brought him here, he's still a top class keeper.

"If you look at his performance level for us over the course of the season, he's been absolutely brilliant.

In big games, he's put in big performances. He still has that hunger and desire to play.

"When criticism comes, sometimes it's not civil and it's personal, sadly.

"Kasper is an outstanding goalkeeper. He's been brilliant for this club since coming in, and he's been an incredible ambassador for his country."

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel isn't likely to undergo surgery for the shoulder injury he sustained on international duty with Denmark.

Schmeichel was in agony during the Danes' defeat to Portugal last week and was subsequently sent to hospital for assessment before his arm was placed in a sling.

The veteran shot-stopper was replaced by Viljami Sinisalo for Celtic's 3-0 win over Hearts on Saturday.

It's not yet clear how long he will be on the sidelines. However, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers thinks it is unlikely he will need an operation.

The club are set to find out more when Schmeichel has another scan on his shoulder at the beginning of next week.

Rodgers said after Celtic's victory, "I spoke to Kasper last night. He's got a scan on Monday. We don't believe it needs an operation.

"It's just going to be about how long it takes for it to repair and heal. So we should know more on Monday.

Schmeichel has made 46 appearances for the Bhoys already this term and has confirmed his stay at Celtic beyond an initial one-year contract.

Impressing with some big saves and smart use of possession in all competitions, including the Champions League, Rodgers is, of course, keen to have his goalkeeper back on the pitch.

However, he's comfortable turning to Sinisalo for now.

The Celtic boss added, "Obviously, we want Kasper back, but it's an opportunity for any player, especially a young goalkeeper. So I'm happy if Vil has to play.

"I really like his authority. We've seen him as a young keeper that could come in, have a season investing in being an understudy, from learning from a top keeper and the mentality of a very top keeper, knowing that he wasn't going to play so much.

"I've seen him grow from pre-season, where he was good in the games. He played a game here before, didn't have a lot to do, but he was assured.

"You see him today, he comes in, it's a big game, Celtic vs Hearts. He makes the save, he can take the ball and knows the lines of pass. I thought he was excellent."

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has given an update on the injury status of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in an interview with Celtic TV.

The Denmark number one, who captained his country last month in their double-header versus Portugal in the Nations League – picked up an injury late on during the second leg in Lisbon, though he played on due to his national team having no more substitutions available.

In an interview with club media on Tuesday (April 1), Rodgers revealed that Schmeichel is optimistic on returning soon, though he will be unavailable for the next few weeks. He said: “We’ve had some news, and we’ll see over the course of the next five to six weeks, is what was mentioned.

“But this is just something that day by day we have a look at it. The timeline that was given to us was around about that, but Kasper tends to think it might not be as long as that.

“Certainly in the immediate future he won’t be available.”

When pressed by the interviewer on whether or not the 38-year-old will play again this season, Rodgers responded: “Yes, I believe so.

“But, like I say, we’ll just have to keep an eye on it.”

So far this season, Schemiechel has played 46 times for Celtic in all competitions, putting in stellar performances both domestically and in Europe. Signed on a free transfer following his release from Anderlecht in Belgium, the goalkeeper missed last Saturday’s Scottish Premiership match versus Hearts at Celtic Park.

Finland international Viljami Sinisalo made just his second start for his new club, as well as his league debut, keeping a clean sheet in what was a routine 3-0 victory at home.

Sinisalo has three caps for his national team, who was signed from Aston Villa, following an impressive loan spell at League One side Exeter City – managed by former Celtic defender Gary Caldwell.

5-6 weeks... so will be early-to-mid May before he returns, but at least is not entirely season ending.

    * sakes. Hopefully he recovers fully.

Hopefully Sinsalo has learned a lot from KS and manages to do well. I'm sure KS will be around to give pointers as well.

Given that, I don't think Schemeichel will play again this season, they won't want to risk him.
I reckon the jersey is Sinisalos's for the taking now.

It's an excellent window of opportunity for him and hope he does well but I'd be very surprised if he displaces Schmeichel from No.1 any time soon.

When is the cup final meant to be? Wondering if he'll be back for that.

Huns game likely to be 3rd game after the split, unless league is won before the split, as the Spfl won't want to risk possibility of us winning the league there so that would be weekend of 10th of May, so 6 weeks time. Gotta imagine that will he his target if that's the case

    * I thought he was injured!!!

Obviously he's not able to play due to the injury, but a boost seeing him on the training pitch.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reckons Kasper Schmeichel's return to first-team action could be 'sooner' than expected.

Schmeichel made a quickfire return to Celtic training at Lennoxtown today after initial fears of a six-week injury lay-off which had the club's supporters buzzing all over social media.

The goalkeeper had been sidelined due to a shoulder injury he suffered while on international duty with Denmark on March 26th.

The Dane was back in training ahead of the trip to face St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership this weekend at McDiarmid Park.

Pictures showed Schmeichel out on the grass with his teammates with no visible signs of any strapping on his arm.

The Dane indulged in some light no-contact training with his fellow shot-stoppers and looked delighted at being out on the pitch.

Rodgers revealed that Schmeichel could be up to speed ahead of schedule and the Irishman joked that his feet were in good nick.

The 52-year-old said: "No, no, he's clearly not damaged his feet.

"So, he can use his feet and work on his touch and whatnot. I think the time we've been given has been five to six weeks by the medical experts, but that could be sooner.

"So, he feels good, he's got some mobility, he's got rotation there, but we just obviously have to be careful with the blade and his shoulders.

"He can do other things, so he's out on the training field and working on the technical side of his game."

With Celtic just three Premiership wins away from securing their 55th title and 13th league flag in 14 years as well as a Scottish Cup semi-final on the horizon the sight of Schmeichel back on the training field is a huge boost for the squad.

Schmeichel's absence handed an opportunity to back-up Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo who made his first league start of the campaign for the champions and kept a clean sheet during last Saturday's 3-0 league victory over Hearts at Parkhead
