I wouldn't be surprised if he's back within a couple of weeks, if there's no tear or break.

A DANISH journalist has sparked major controversy this week after taking aim at Kasper Schmeichel in the aftermath of Denmark's Nations League defeat to Portugal.

The Celtic goalie, 38, kept a clean sheet in Denmark and saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo in the second leg in Lisbon but failed to prevent his side from crashing out in the quarter-final following a 5-3 aggregate defeat after extra-time

The Denmark captain has been his nation's No.1 for a number of years but many now believe the veteran's time playing with the national team should be up.

He's now found himself caught up in a wild row over his performances back in his homeland.

The Danish PFA have decided to step in and get involved after he was mercilessly targeted with digs regarding his weight in a major publication after the second leg.

The journalist who wrote the article even shockingly compared the goalie to a child with polio.

Schmeichel was hailed by many fans for his brave effort in Portugal after he refused to make way despite suffering a nasty injury during the game.

He was spotted in a sling at full-time and the injury could source him out on the sidelines fora number of weeks, according to reports in Denmark.

Blasting the article published by Ekstra Bladet, PFA chief Michael Sahl Hansen said: “It is way over the line. Hopefully, the journalist is undergoing some serious soul-searching.

"The way of writing about another person is completely wrong. And we in the Players' Association have to say that clearly and distinctly.”

He added: "(It's) completely distasteful to try to denigrate a player in that way, by drawing parallels to a deeply serious illness and by fat-shaming.

"Anders Olsen's article is a flawed, flat and sad example of the need for this particular initiative. The article is under all criticism and could easily make him a strong candidate for the role of clown in an upcoming campaign film for the initiative

We must have room to discuss and debate in Danish football. And it is of course entirely appropriate to have professional opinions and analyses about the game and performances.

"But it must be done in a proper way, where one does not descend to such a low level and engage in direct personal attacks as here. And here the media (also) have a great responsibility not to incite a hateful or borderline tone

"I believe that Anders Olsen was not up to the task, that he must have gotten carried away in a really angry tone, and that in my world he owes an apology."

The newspaper's editor-in-chief refused to apologise for the article and says he "stands by" his writer who published the piece.

Editor Knud Brix said: "I agree that there may be some who are offended by this but our writer has chosen to use these words. I stand by that, and I think it is within the bounds of what an article should be."

Schmeichel's performances this season haven't suggested any sort of issue with his physique. Typical * journalist vying for clicks.

    Schmeichel out indefinitely

    - Kasper Schmeichel is undergoing tests, he will be out for several weeks - we don't know yet if it will be longer, says Brian Riemer

Kasper Schmeichel traveled home from Portugal with his arm in a sling.

The 38-year-old national team goalkeeper suffered a shoulder injury in extra time that left him writhing in pain and struggling to complete the match.

At the time he was injured, Denmark had made all substitutions.

If Brian Riemer had replaced Kasper Schmeichel against Portugal, Denmark would have had to play with ten men because Denmark had already used all six of its substitutions.

    - I never considered replacing Kasper, so we had to finish the game with ten men. We were chasing a goal, and one wing shot Kasper Schmeichel is still better than Rasmus Nissen Kristensen on goal.

    - After all, Kasper could still play with his feet, says Brian Riemer, who was in dialogue with Kasper Schmeichel on Tuesday.

    - I've spoken to Kasper. He told me that it was one of his proudest days because he was captain of Denmark.

    - Now he is injured, but whether he will be out for a few weeks or longer, we do not yet know, but he requires attention. The positive thing is that examinations have shown that it is not a fracture and something that is career-threatening, says Brian Riemer.

Brian Riemer will not assemble his national team until June, when Denmark plays two test matches at home against Northern Ireland and Lithuania. The first match on June 7th will be played in Parken, while the match against Lithuania will take place in Odense on June 10th.

    International breaks strike again.

it's one thing getting injured, but that reads like they purposefully played him on, knowing he was injured and preferred risking him over playing with 10 men.

His injury may now go from a supposed few weeks, to anything up til September.
I guess we will never know how long can be attributed to the fact they (from what that reads above) kept him playing.

Hate international breaks for this *. Managers have no care for the actual players.

Could never understand the rush to give him a contract extension, not as if he would be jumping ship.
Should have waited till season end before making the offer.

Giving him a years extension made sense, a fully fit Schmeichel would still be our number one keeper. Another year developing Sinisalo and giving him match time (or scouting for better should he not perform). Hopefully Kasper is back between the sticks before too long.
Don't want us bit in * and having to panic buy another keeper for next season even though we do still have Bain. Maybe we have been blessed with excellent keepers for too long, a good keeper just don't cut it now.:84:

It wasnt an extension as such, more triggered the second year.
It wasnt a terrible move in regards to him feeling he could keep going on.

I think you have to take into consideration his age, level of fitness, the rehab time, and the possibility it could be a recurring injury. Just look at the trouble Kyogo had with his shoulder.

    And ask @Wee Baldy

He will tell you what it is like.

Don’t shoot the messenger here but I’ve heard he doesn’t really train that intensely during the week at Celtic.

This kind of coincides with the fact you rarely see him do a big warm up before games.

Doesn’t really matter too much as he has obviously performed really well for us but it does raise the question if he’s capable of getting back into shape if it is a long lay off and he isn’t training at a high level at the best of times

    Regardless, cracking player

Hopefully we're in the market for another keeper just incase it is worse than expected. His distribution has been massive for us at times so another keeper that comfortable on the ball would be a bonus.

Kyogo missed like 2 games after his initial shoulder injury and got subbed off with it a couple of times. He was ever-present the past 2 years before he left

Celtic can expect to receive financial compensation after Kasper Schmeichel was injured whilst on international duty with Denmark, according to Keith Hackett.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider he was dismayed to see the Hoops’ goalkeeper injured after a “delayed” offside flag from the assistant referee

The 38-year-old Premier League title winner joined Celtic in the summer, following a brief stint with Anderlecht in Belgium

Schmeichel’s form for the Hoops has been a welcome surprise since replacing fan favourite Joe Hart, starting every game in the Premiership and Champions League this season.

However, the Danish goalkeeper is now set for a period on the side-lines following an injury against Portugal

With Denmark hanging on in their Nations League match against Portugal, substitute Franciso Trincao scored to send the game to extra-time.

The former Wolves winger then found the back of the net again, to give the home side the lead and with it, added momentum.

Pushing forward in search of a winner in the two-legged tie, out-of-favour Liverpool striker Diogo Jota was put through on goal, before colliding with Schmeichel, leaving the Danish shot-stopper clutching his shoulder

The linesman then signalled the Portuguese striker was offside after contact between the two players

However, with manager Brain Riemer having used all of his substitutes, the Celtic keeper was forced to play on and could be heard screaming in agony at each shot he faced.

Much has been made of the Nations League, with some of it’s most vocal critics highlighting the added strain it puts on players to play more games.

Schmeichel’s injury will now be a major blow to Celtic, as he is expected to spend at least a few weeks out injured.

Having been asked about whether the Hoops may be in line to claim compensation for Schmeichel’s injury, ex-PGMOL chief, Hackett, confirmed to Football Insider they would, whilst also highlighting the issues with the officiation process when it comes to the offside rule, saying:

“I am sure that Celtic can expect compensation following the injury to Kasper Schmeichel.

“Sadly, I have stated on many occasions that the delayed offside flag will result in potential injury whilst forward and goalkeeper are challenging for the ball.

“The assistant is operating the recommended process on tight offside decisions where VAR is in operation

It frankly surprises me that we have not seen more injuries of this nature on delayed offside flags.”

As outlined by the FIFA Club Protection Programme (CPP), Celtic are entitled to a maximum of €7.5million on a daily pro rata basis, provided the injury lasts longer than 28 days, as the first 28 days are not covered. The compensation will be based on Schmeichel’s wages.

Celtic will now be forced to turn to Viljami Sinisalo whilst Schmeichel is out, with the Finnish goalkeeper having only made one Scottish Cup appearance all season.

Kyogos keeps reoccurring because he hasn't had surgery on it. Kasper wouldn't be able to put surgery off seeing as he's a keeper. Plus the reports I read said it wasn't dislocated anyway
