Belfast used to scare the * oot me.
My wee sister and my mum were big into Irish dancing. World Championships were at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast 1997. Me and my dad (who had worked there in the 80s) went driving round and it was still really intimidating. 97 was right when it was just calming down...and it was still eery and not a good atmosphere.

Then I went with a girl from portadown in 2001 and went to Belfast and it still felt a bit dodgy but a lot better....maybe it was because I was a bit older

But now I go and you could just as easy be in Glasgow or Edinburgh. It just feels like a normal city. Still all flags and murals but the scary feeling seems to have gone. It's a much better atmosphere now.

Used to eat in a place in the city centre called 'Shenanigans'....don't know if it's still there but the ham, colcanon and cabbage was off the scale. Absolutely brilliant it was

Went about 5 years ago for the ice hockey and the impression l got off the younger generation is they couldn't understand what everyone was fighting about. Felt the city centre was a totally a safe place to walk about at night

My mate went about 10 years ago and this is his story.
You get the tour bus that goes up the shankhill, then through the peace wall and then up the Falls. You can get off at any point and take pictures. I know this too, cause I've done it myself.

Well he gets off on the Falls road and doesn't get back on the bus. Walks about taking photos of the IRA cemetery etc and the murals. Then decides he's going for a pint at a pub he has came across. Goes in...people all looking...like walking in a pub in the Wild West he said.....pint of Harp (he loves harp).....barman gives him the pint. Then he asks him. "Are u the guy walking round taking pictures?"
Shat himself he says. How the * did he know that?
Guy says "this isn't a tourist resort son, your walking about here with a Scottish accent taking pictures.....people round here don't take chances"
Barman called him a black cab back into the city centre for his own safety. He says he absolutely shat himself. People watching everywhere. Scary *

Don’t get doing those sort of tours in the first place. It’s like doing a tour of Glasgow visiting spots where people have been shot or stabbed to death.

We visit our relations in Killybegs, Donegal once a year and, depending on my ferry crossing times, we sometimes book into a Belfast hotel overnight. I've been doing this for years now and I can honestly say that the city centre is no different from any other big city centre. We are wise enough not to stray outside the city centre into the more dodgy areas and visiting the murals etc. hasn't been on my list of things to do.

Thing is mate. Belfast isn't s very big city. It's no nearly as big as Glasgow for example.
There's not a big space between the city centre and the housing schemes. It's only a few streets away.
I'd put it at about from Buchanan Street to Bridgeton Cross (in Glasgow terms) and your right in the middle of it. No far. Probably that distance.
A few streets up in Belfast and your on Crumlin Road and then it begins....

I've always made sure I don't have too many beers and not go wandering as, like you said m8, the dodgy areas aren't too far away.

No disrespect to any Belfast natives on here, but I find it unfathomable that anyone would part with actual money to spend any time there, what with all the alternatives in Europe.

A depressing shithole. Like a greyer, gloomier Glasgow with a more tense atmosphere.

Dublin is more expensive. But far far better.
    And the women are prettier
And they don't have a Belfast accent! It's very very angry sounding

And there are less prods and no brits at all except tourists
