Brendan Rodgers has made it clear he does not want Celtic to stand still in the recruitment department.

The manager was pleased with his scouting staff across the busy summer transfer window where the likes of Arne Engels, Adam Idah, Alex Valle and others arrived.

Big money was spent by the club – including a record fee for Belgian Engels – and it has thus far paid dividends as the Hoops lead the Scottish Premiership and have been competitive in the Champions League.

That Rodgers‘ troops are still seriously in the hunt for a spot in the knockout playoff in Europe’s elite competition is further proof of that.

But Rodgers won’t want his staff to rest on their laurels

The January window is fast approaching and already there are a handful of names on the shortlist with a view to potentially moving to sign players in two months’ time.

One man who has Parkhead as an interesting option is Burnley’s Josh Brownhill.

67 Hail Hail understands the midfielder has been tentatively spoken about within the Celtic Park corridors as they look to bolster their options

Brownhill has a number of other clubs interested and potential suitors from Italy and Saudi Arabia. And it’s understood there are likely to be more sizeable financial packages on the table from elsewhere.

The combative Englishman can sign a pre-contract away from Turf Moore in January with his deal with the Clarets expiring in the summer of 2025.

That would represent strong value for money for the Hoops with the experienced Brownhill having managed more than 180 appearances for Burnley since joining for £9million in 2020

Before that he was a stalwart for Bristol City where he also played more than 150 games

Brownhill joined Burnley from City under Sean Dyche and established himself as a top player there while also working with Premier League giant Vincent Kompany.

Before the Belgian moved to Bayern Munich he had made sure Brownhill had his one year contract extension triggered.

And he explained that the 28-year-old had become “very important” to the Premier League side before their relegation.

Kompany, back in May 2024, said: “We have a player here that is under contract who has been very important for us, so rumours…we’re used to rumours.”

Don't see where he fits in. We were linked with Cullen as well in the summer and nothing was in that

He's a good player, doing well for a Burnley side that's 4th, but would be surprised if he left them if they got promoted again.

Guessing he would maybe be viewed as a replacement for Hatate if he leaves in the summer.

Very random link, a 29 year old for big money and on big money for the strongest area of our squad.

Like the idea of signing more ready made players, but don't see the need for a midfielder just now.

    McGregor, hatate and Engels.
    Bernardo and Mccowan.

There isn't actually space for an established player that wouldn't in turn * the development of others now.

Add to that, we all want Lennon Miller as well.

I assume Hatate is earmarked as the likely one to leave in the next window or two, which would free up a space.
But by the time he leaves then Bernardo or Engels will have stepped in to a firm starting position and Mccowan is great cover. The void left would be ideal for a development player, not an "older" head.

    In the same boat.

I don't see the point of this signing considering it's an area of the park where we don't need 'ready made' players in as we already have that and in those waiting in the wings.

If he was a left back, it'd be a different story.

Celtic have been backed to complete a deal to sign Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill on a free transfer if he is not offered a contract extension.

This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 29-year-old would be “a great option” for Celtic given his availability

Brownhill’s contract at Turf Moor is set to expire at the end of the season as things stand, and he is now available to agree a pre-contract to move abroad in the summer.

That opportunity has put Celtic on alert as they would like to add further depth, experience, and quality to Brendan Rodgers’ squad

However, Burnley could still offer a contract extension before the end of the season as no formal decision has been made at the club about his departure.

The midfielder has made 196 appearances for the Clarets since his move from Bristol City in 2020 and has remained a key part of Scott Parker’s side as club captain this season.

Brownhill has started 27 of their 29 league games so far, chipping in with nine goals and four assists from the middle of the park.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that his performances and availability has attracted interest from a number of clubs

Josh Brownhill is a very decent all-round player and has been for years,” he told Football Insider.

“Over a period of time, he’s given consistently impressive performances which go under the radar.

“He’s one of those players where you talk about others in the team who might stand out more, but you forget him because he’s been consistently solid.

“He’s now doing that for Burnley, and they haven’t half done well this season.

They’ve not made a decision yet about whether they’re going to lose him or not, so they could still hand him a new contract before the end of the season.

“He’s been one of their better players – but sometimes things come to the natural end of their time.

“Josh Brownhill has been a very good player at that level, and in the Premier League.

“So for a team like Celtic, he would bring a lot of experience and quality to their side which is always a valuable asset.

But I don’t expect they’ll be the only ones interested because if he’s going on a free, I think he would improve a lot of sides. They’re well placed at Celtic to do this.”

I don't think the manager is all that impressed with Paulo. He never seems to start him or trust him especially for the big occasion even when both Hatate and Engels form has dipped .
This signing would be a strange one , although I have always heard good things about Brownhill and he is highly rated .

Have never heard of him or seen him play but is he one paced and hit lightweight but tidy on the ball?

If so..... Massive pass. We have plenty of his type

This might be a good option for us, especially on a free.

I believe he can play DM which is what we need, and he covers an incredible amount of ground, combative too.
Ton of experience too at 29, which is another thing we need.

Eh. We have McCowan for that. I was hoping for a player that mainly defends.

Looking at his stats he's played DM CM & AM for Burnley this season, so sounds like a bit of an all rounder, or like every other CM we've got. Good for his experience but I'd like more variety in the midfield options

He does look a box to box type but he also looks like he fair gets stuck in which would be a Hatate replacement I would think.

He is their captain as well. Loads of goals, assists as well. Gets a decent amount of yellow cards, but hardly a red. Shows he knows the tricks but wont go overboard.

If we can get a player like that on a free? Why not!
