Well, ok, at least can now just concentrate entirely on winning games in the League. That is the only way they are going to get hands on siverware this season.

Celtic defender Caitlin Hayes is closing in on a move to Women’s Super League (WSL) outfit Brighton and Hove Albion, The Scotsman understand.

A pivotal member of the Hoops side since joining in September 2020, the Seagulls have identified the The Republic Of Ireland internationalist as one of their top January targets, with talks now believed to be at an advance stage between all parties for an imminent transfer

Hayes’ departure in this window would be a huge blow to Celtic’s hopes of retaining their Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) crown, with the reigning champions currently occupying fifth position in the SWPL, and trailing league leaders Glasgow City by six points.

Linked with moves to England, Spain and America in the opening weeks of the January transfer window, Hayes started the club’s 2-1 SWPL Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers on Sunday. Celtic head coach Elena Sadiku had hoped to keep Hayes at the club for the rest of the season, but the overtures of the WSL appear to be too strong

Speaking last week on the speculation surrounding Hayes, Sadiku said: “Caitlin is here and will continue to play for the rest of season. I believe she is going to be here. If her agent has something to do with the rumours then that’s up to them but I have not heard anything. She is here and she is playing for Celtic.”

Hayes agreed a new three-year deal with the club just 18 months ago, and the ex-Lewes player has developed into a huge fans’ favourite during her time at the club. She has also become a regular starter for the Republic of Ireland national team, earning 17 caps after first making her international debut against Northern Ireland in September 2023.

Scoring a number of vital goals to help her side win their maiden SWPL title last May, the defender also headed home the goal that helped Celtic beat Glasgow City 1-0 in the SWPL Cup final in 2021 and break their 11 year wait for silverware. She also twice played her part in the club’s back-to-back Scottish Cup wins in 2022, and 2023.

Hayes going is a massive, massive loss.

Agree with this, if Hayes goes it would undoubtedly be a big loss. Can only presume that Brighton are offering more money than what Celtic are and wants to test herself down in the WSL, whether it is now or in the summer.

Celtic FC Women can confirm that Caitlin Hayes will depart after four years with the club, signing for WSL side Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee.

The Ireland internationalist joined ahead of the 2020/21 season, fulfilling her dream of playing for her childhood team.

Caitlin quickly became a cornerstone of Celtic’s success, contributing to one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Over the course of her time at Celtic Park, Caitlin made 153 appearances and became known for her eye for goal, netting 40 times.

In May 2024, Caitlin played her part in helping Celtic secure their first-ever Scottish Women’s Premier League title, a historic achievement for the club.

During her time with the Hoops, she also lifted the Scottish Women’s Cup in 2021/22 and 2022/23 and scored the decisive winner in the 1-0 victory over Glasgow City 2021/22 SWPL Cup final.

Caitlin also played a role in the backline as Celtic qualified for the UEFA Women’s Champions’ League group stages for the first time during the 2024/25 season.

Her outstanding performances earned her numerous accolades, including Celtic Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, and PFA Scotland Player of the Year for 2023/24.

A fans-favourite, Caitlin’s iconic pink pre-wrap and her contributions, both on and off the pitch will be remembered by both fans and the club alike.

After completing her move south of the border, Hayes bid farewell to the club, saying:

"It has been nothing short of one of the greatest honours of my life to wear the green and white

"My nine-year-old self would never have believed that her wildest dreams would become her reality. But I guess, after all, I was just a ghirl with a dream and a fan that got lucky."

'I wish nothing but success for everyone involved with Celtic Football Club. Once a Celt, always a Celt.'

Head-coach, Elena Sadiku added: “I want to thank Caitlin for everything she has done for the club, the fans and the team, overall, throughout her years here.

“But especially since I have come to Glasgow, she has been very important for the team on the pitch.

“She has been a great character. She is taking the step now to the Women’s Super League, with a great time like Brighton.

“She is achieving one of her dreams, which I’m always going to support my players to achieve their dreams and try to reach their full potential.

'We all wish her the very best of luck with everything, both in her career and in life, and hopefully one day we can see her back at Celtic.'

Celtic FC Women are thrilled to announce the signing of Scotland internationalist Abi Harrison, who joins the club in the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old striker has signed a short term deal until the end of the season, marking her return to Glasgow after six successful years at Bristol City.

Harrison began her football journey at Celtic as a youngster coming through the Academy, making her first-team debut at just 14 years old.

After her initial spell with the Hoops, the striker moved to Hibernian FC, where she enjoyed a hugely successful four years.

During that time, she won the Scottish Women’s Cup in 2016 and three consecutive League Cups between 2016 and 2018.

Harrison’s goal-scoring ability stood out as she claimed the Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons, scoring 15 goals in 2017 and an incredible 25 goals in 2018.

In January 2019, Harrison joined English side Bristol City, where she became a key player and the club’s all-time record scorer with 40 goals in 128 appearances.

She was instrumental in Bristol City’s promotion-winning campaign in 2023, helping them secure the FA Women’s Championship title.

On the international stage, Harrison earned her first Scotland call-up in 2016 and made her full competitive debut in 2021, scoring a dramatic last-minute equaliser at Hampden Park against Ukraine.

After making her return to the Hoops, Harrison said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be back at Celtic and can’t wait to get going again. A lot of people know that it is a bit of a full circle fairytale for me.

“I made no illusions when I left the club as a 17-year-old that it was my dream to play for them again one day.

'As soon as I signed for Bristol, I said the only club that I would leave Bristol for was Celtic.'

“It probably still hasn’t hit me yet that I’ve been able to do that. That will come and process when I pull the shirt on for the first time in a game.

So, I think it feels amazing, and I know it’s just going to keep getting better, especially for me and my family.

“They can see my not only live my dream but also live there’s as well as we are all Celtic fans.”

Elena Sadiku added: “We’re very excited to bring Abi into our squad. She has great experience in both the Women’s Super League and the Championship.

“She was a very important player for Hibernian when she played in Scotland, and obviously she has represented the Scottish National Team at senior level too.

“Her presence in the penalty area and her technical ability to score goals is something that is going to hopefully help us add more goals and be more clinical.”

I think Harrison is a solid signing. Team needs some strength up front.

Hayes leaving leaves a bit of a gap, expect someone in soon.

Well the Ghirls have been down in terms of goal production this season, and finishing has been part of that issue, so it's good that they've looked to address this, at least in the short term.
