    Marvin Compper(s) 2 Du (Wei)... sorry, couldn't resist a little Sinead O'Conner, :p

Both amassed the grand total of 1 appearance each, in the Scottish Cup against lower league opposition, and even in those they were crap. Such an anomoly, given that both had decent careers aside from their time in Glasgow, but those 2 have to genuinely be up there with the worst signings, along with the likes of Raphael Scheidt. Still beggars belief that £5m was spent on him.

    Just food for thought...

1947/48 was the worst ever season in Celtic's history, avoiding relegation in the 88th minute of the last game of the league season, and 2 players were brought in the January of that season, each played just 1 game and one of them remained at the club for 3 more years without ever getting another shot at the first team. So you would have to think that Phillip Gormley and Robert Fraser of that team would have to be up there with among the worst ever, fi they were so poor that, despite making their debuts, neither could break into the worst Celtic first XI ever again.

Or goalkeeper Willie Goldie, who'd had a couple of brief trials with the club before he was signed in August 1960, made his one and only appearance for Celtic first XI when on 1 October 1960, Robert Kelly (the club chairman) on board the team bus, spotted Goldie walking to the ground (as a supporter). Kelly had the bus pull over, pick Goldie up, and Kelly insisted that Goldie play that day ahead of John Fallon. Celtic proceeded to lose 2-0 to Aidrie, with both goals coming from goalkeeping errors in the first half. Goldie never played for the Hoops again and was released later that same month.

I often think of Martin Hayes. Superstar and marquee signing of 1990. Modeled the new kit and everything. All over the back pages of the papers saying "im going to do this....and Im gonnae do that". Had made over 100 appearances for Arsenal scoring 30 odd goals so you would assume that the guy was decent.

He only made 7 appearances for us in 3 years and scored zero goals. Even Cascarino was getting in ahead of him. This was the dark ages, the long long years of winning nothing for us. Finishing 4th in the league two seasons in a row and all that. But still Martin Hayes could not get a game and on the very brief times where he got on the park he never scored a goal

Know where you're coming from, @hiphopaddict some of those guys during that last year or so of Cesar, then Brady & Macari really did beggar belief, and Hayes is a good shout as being emblemic of that. His best at Arsenal was already a good couple of seasons in the rear view mirror and by the time he came to Celtic was little more than a fringe player, and that is precisely what we got. Indeed, it could be said that the whole Judas fiasco contributed to this, as that was clearly who Cesar had in mind coming into that 1990/91 season, but after that happened, meant looking elsewhere, resulting in the return of Charlie Nicholas and the signing of Hayes.

That said, there is no getting around the fact that Hayes was clearly already past his best and after that first season he was sent out loan the next 2 years, and still couldn't get a game at those clubs either. Again, so many problems when the old Board was running things and the general scouting and signing of players was definitely a big part of that.

Virgo played a 10-12 or so games IIRC in that first WGS season before being sent out on numerous loans over the remainder of his contract. It should be noted that he wasn't signed to be an automatic first team starter - he was brought in as cover for first choice pair of Balde & McManus, and really wasn't until Bobo went to ACON with his national side, that Virgo got his run in the side.

It's clear that overall Celtic was a step up too much for him - although if I'm not mistaken I remember being at one game when he was the man of the match, so at least on one occasion he proved his worth, which is more than can be said for any of these others that have been mentioned. He also had some knee trouble I seem to recall, but can't remember when that fits in the time line.

Anyhow, I suppose should call a halt on this sort of chat, as it's not the right thread for it really, but to wonder at the wonder that is and was Kenny. :56:

I remember this period well as it was when I started going to the games. The Kelly, Grant and White board seemed to think that bringing back old players would bring back the trophy winning years. The re-signing of Frankie Bhoy McAvennie epitomizes this. He'd just got out of court, dodging a cocaine charge. He was then ready to sign for Partick Thistle because no one else would take him. Then our brilliant old board thought that re-signing him would pacify the fans who were kicking off big style at the time when the 'sack the board' campaign was getting in full swing.

I remember the fans still loved him. Same with Nicholas. But both were a shadow of the players they had been the first time around. They then also signed players just because they had been half decent playing with big clubs. Martin Hayes being one of them, Gary Gillespie and Lee Martin being another 2 examples.

Saying that though when Fergus came in we then went and re-signed Andy Walker probably with the same view that because he had played for us when we were winning trophies that this would automatically happen again.

Anyway sorry, none of this has anything to do with Jonjoe Kenny.

With the bitter exit in the cup round of 16 at 1. FC Köln (1:2 aet) and the following league defeat at SpVggGreuther Fürth(1:2) Hertha BSC have had a few successful days. Despite being in eleventh place, the chances of ending the season with the hoped-for return to the Bundesliga are slim, given that they are only five points behind third place and just one point behind the leaders.SC PaderbornAlthough the situation is still intact, Berlin should also consider the possibility of a third year in the second division.

    Bournemouth and Celtic Glasgow interested
Jonjoe Kenny, whose contract expires at the end of the season, also wants to play in the top division again next year at the latest. According to "Sport Bild" (edition of December 11, 2024), there are several interested parties for the 27-year-old right-back, who has been able to advertise himself with one goal and six assists in the first 15 match days, particularly with his offensive qualities. The Englishman is said to be on the list of AFC Bournemouth, currently eighth in the Premier League, and the Scottish major club Celtic Glasgow, which is represented in the Champions League.

Because Hertha BSC cannot really afford to lose Kenny on a free transfer in the summer, it is even possible that he will leave during the winter break. This would probably mean an additional seven-figure income, but would also mean a loss of quality, possibly with significant consequences for the club's chances of promotion.

Is that another Glasgow Celtic that's interested in him? That's a wild link.
