Trouble is, the British army were killing people in Ireland during the first world war.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ean-poppy-protest-video-british-soldiers.html

McClean said he would happily wear a poppy if its sole purpose was to honour those killed in the First and Second World Wars.

And he claimed the poppy is 'now forced on everyone in the UK 'and * forbid someone doesn't wear it, the abuse they have to endure'.

McClean's interview with Kielty in September 2023 was posted on X this morning in which he said there is 'an arrogance and ignorance [in England] where they're taught one side of their history'.

'They speak about the IRA and this and that as terrorists , and you know we look at the British Army as terrorists as well because of what they inflicted in my home city and throughout the north of Ireland,' he said.

He said if the poppy only represented those who fought in the two world wars, he would have no problem wearing one. However, he said, as the poppy also represents those who have fought since 1945 - including during the Northern Ireland conflict, he could not wear one.

In that letter, McClean said he had great respect for those that fought and died in both World Wars, however, he had a great problem with the poppy representing those killed in conflicts since 1945.

In particular, McClean said that as someone born in Derry, he could not support the poppy appeal.

He said: 'For people from the North of Ireland such as myself, and specifically those in Derry, scene of the 1972 * Sunday massacre, the poppy has come to mean something very different.'

He said that after those events it would be 'an act of disrespect' to those people.

As ever at this time of year, it's only the 'right kind' of politics that we're to bring into the football arena.

I'd personally wait outside but I don't really care if people want to disrupt it.I find it hard to give a * about what the media and huns think, they're hardly the bastions of morality.

Feel the same way don't wear the poppy but for one minute for the whole year I can stay silent out of respect of the soldiers who fought and died against the Nazis or we would be living under the third Reich and there would be no freedoms at all .

I just think there is way too much circus events before football games. The only event I wish to see would be the club remembering an ex player who has passed away. And maybe a team photo.
All the other * does my head in, 2 teams of mascots, shaking hands before games, remembrance day, talking the knee, monarchy deaths, LGBTQ, etc. where is it going to end?

These two screenshots of Irish history tell such a different story.

And many WW1 veterans joined the fight for independence after. The huns always try to call out the tactics of the IRA.

It is hypocritical, as if the *'s invaded, Churchill had devised a secret army to use the same guerrilla warfare against them. This included people from each town and village to bomb targets and execute people openly conversing with * soldiers.

It’s virtue signalling nonsense the whole poppy carry on. It’s getting worse each year as well. Absolutely rammed down your throat everywhere you look.

I get your point about a lot of fanfare. But football is a wide reaching thing, and maybe it's good it can be used to get points across. Some of the points you have raised about fighting discrimination against minorities. If you can get people who are heroes to kids to celebrate it then that can have a positive impact on younger people and make a more accepting world, what's the problem?

completely agree on almost every point you’ve raised , this is why I would never wear the poppy or engage in any support for military. However I think there is a distinction between the poppy, financially supporting the poppy appeal and holding a minutes silence.

Also agree we Shouldn’t have minutes silences before football games but we do and they’re not going away , I Would definitely prefer a protest was silent and people didn’t show up till after kick off and allowed those who do want a minute silence to remember ww1 and ww2 to do so (I also understand that this minutes silence has been hijacked for all conflicts) however I think people can observe a minute silence and not be engaging in military support. The whole poppy circus is nauseating and rammed down everyone’s throat to further military support , however I think there is a distinction between observing a minutes silence and wearing a poppy. Neither should be near the football but I definitely prefer non attendance and banners as means to protest rather than disrupting a silence.

Absolutely disgusting to listen to so many on about Celtic fans singing IRA songs during the attempted minutes silence at Killie Sunday.
