We should be really pushing the boat out to get 3 or 4 quality players for this. All we need to do is finish in the top 24 (out of 36 teams).

Then we get another 2 games to potentially reach the last 16, which would be 10 UCL games in total for us.

For once, there is a realistic chance of reaching the last 16. Make some * signings!

I feel like it's harder than ever to reach the Last 16 now.

They set this up to make it easier to get to the later stages for the big rich teams, to make sure the big Leagues are guarenteed to never slip down the rankings and and lose their places, to add 2 extra teams from the big Leagues and to funnel more of the money to them.

This is basically step one of the Super League.

I'd bet within 10 years, probably 5 they will add 4 more teams from the big Leagues guarenteeing the top 4 Leagues 5 teams plus 2 extra for 6 and will skew the money to them.

The next change will probably be going to 40 teams, with the 4 extra teams being 5th placed from England, Spain, Italy and Germany, everyone playing 10 games and then only the top 16 will be in the Last 16. This is them only making the first step towards that.

Like now they guarentee everyone in the CL 6 coefficient points that count toward their countries coefficient so England etc with 4 and 5 teams automatically are starting European campaigns now with like 4 coefficient points as a country before any of their teams play a match means like French teams need to win about 12 European games a season more than German, Italian, English teams etc to have any hope of every taking their place in the top 4 which will never happen. They essentially closed off the top 4 now.

Then when they redistributed the money this time, they funneled most to the knockout rounds and give you more for finishing higher up the table and the new Value pillar pretty much guarentees all the teams from England, Italy, Spain and Germany and France who pay the most for TV rights get the most money from that as well.

Remember when they add 4 more teams to round it off to 40 soon and scrap the like Last 16 play off round, they will get more TV money and will brand it as making the competition more prestigous by having 4 better teams and that will bring more money from TV rights and now everyone will get more money and an extra home game.

The draw is set to take place at 5pm in Monaco on Thursday August 29.

Teams who finish in the top eight will qualify automatically for the last 16, while those who place ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged knockout play-off for the chance to join them.

    Would like:
Inter and Dortmund (maybe even Bayern if they haven't got it together yet)
Brugge and Shaktar (Atalanta would be fun after their lowball O'Riley offers)
    Bodo (revenge) and PSV
    Brest and Bratislava

Back in the real world, I hope we avoid the English sides. Would be horrible being smashed by Aston Villa.

Surprised Monaco in pot 4, definitely team to avoid as they would probably give us a doing.

Majority of Pot 3 and Pot 4 teams really all look Europa level at best and likely will reflect as the games are played. Safe to say about 85/90% of those pot 1/2 teams will qualify to knockout rounds leaving the rest to scrap it out for the remaining 3/4 places

I have a funny feeling should we make all our signings we are targeting they won't get into the groove until later in the season, by the time we are out of Europe. Seems to be a regular occurrence for us this last decade.

With an 8 game league like this think quite a lot of teams will end up with the same amount of points. Assuming if teams are tied on points it goes to goal difference. Maybe going by goals scored before goal difference would have been a good idea - encourage teams to go for it more.

The top 24 go into the knockout round tough, so not beyond imagination we can get there if we get a favourable draw!

    You sure that's right?

If each team gets 2 teams from each group, would that not mean pot 1 teams end up with 2 other pot 1 teams? We'd only have 2 pot 1s?

    I've probably missed something

I think it will suit us tbh in the old format you lose first game your under a lot of pressure in the second game as you can’t really afford to lose it because your normally out if that happens
If we lose first two theirs still a chance of the play off in this format because it’s more like a league than group …. One things for sure goal difference could well come into it so can’t let the heads go being 1 or 2-0 down try keep it respectable if we are gonna lose a game
