Again, that may be right. Maybe it is Lawwell who is the reason we haven't modernised; but do we know that for sure? The good thing about ignoring Lawwell and simply demanding a modern professional structure is that it demands the right result regardless of whether or nor Lawwell has been the main obstacle.

If this is true, it is an actual embarrassment.

Sorting out the structure won't work if we have a chairman that wants transfers done his way, or who constantly meddles. To have a modern professional structure that works we need to bring in the right people and allow them to do the job their way.

All we can do is consider what we've seen and heard over the years, and make our best judgement on it. Same as anything else in life.

To my eyes, Lawwell is an accountant who wants to keep the club's spending as low as feasible while increasing income. I think he wants the club to be run his way, and doesn't want to be challenged. Hence there is a reluctance to modernise, and do things differently. It's time for fresh ideas and someone with a modern, progressive approach to be directing the football operations.

For that to work, I think Lawwell has to go.

Good post RR. There's some with a deep set hatred for Lawwell based on not much more than guessing what's going on behind the scenes. Like you, I'm not one way or the other, I'll wait on seeing some facts that he's as bad as some think.

I just think that this constant negativity about him and the board helps no *. Also quite bizarre given we're in the middle of our most dominant era ever.

    Ever?

Not sure if our 20 years of failure to win a knockout tie in europe under his watch compares to the 60s and 70s.

We've became a laughing stock in europe due to the constant downsizing of the club.

Domestic success may be good enough for the board but it's not for vast majority of fans or any half decent manager we attract

I dont usually like to be so aggressive in challenging others' opinions, but that is absolute * bollocks.

    ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS.

Most dominant era against what? A struggling and financially crippled sevco , who still, LAUGHABLY, beat us to the 10iar title with a rookie halfwit manager and a third of our budget.

Constant embarrassment in Europe, when was the last time we made it out a group stage? Or won a knockout tie?

Era of domination? Thats like calling Poland a superpower because its economy didn't collapse like Greece.

Small minded, parochial bullshit, as long as we beat sevco eh?

Ive defended Lawwell right up until last season, i always stated he was Desmonds man, and merely following instructions. But something is * ROTTEN at this club. And forgive me, but fans like you allow it to continue.

Well now that this ridiculous tactic of trying to censor a fan blogger has turned the attention squarely on PL hopefully we'll see a bit of movement re transfers to get us all talking about something else!

You not enjoying the 20 odd year dominance we've had domestically?

As for Europe, everyone would love us to be more competitive in Europe mate but the truth of the matter is, because of finances favouring the english/bigger leagues, I think the best we can do is produce a team that might, on occasion, qualify through the group stages and make it difficult for teams coming to parkhead.

Outwith the Stein era, which was a different time (over 50 years ago) and a magnificent achievement, other than the odd good spell which lasts a couple of seasons, Celtic have had virtually no impact in Europe other that the odd good result. No sure why some have the expectation that we should become a European heavyweight. We should always try and be the best we can be, totally agree, but don't get the level of anger levelled at the board tbh.

I love beating the huns tbh.

A constant embarrassment in Europe, really? What's your expectations for us in Europe mate? How many good seasons have we had in Europe in the last 50 years? Why blame Lawwell?

If it was true it would be good for a crowd fund to help fight a case against him.

@Pogues Can't speak for the two lads you've replied to but I feel a lot of fans frustration with the board/Desmond is the lack of ambition to do any better in Europe. Nobody is saying we should be heavyweights at CL level but we get regularly beaten in Europe by teams with comparable incomes to us and sometimes lesser teams from lesser leagues, so the argument of the bigger leagues having advantages doesn't wash.

We don't invest what we do bring in very well, and have an outdated structure that is not producing results at that level. We're lucky that we are so far ahead of the game in Scotland that nobody can get close to us. That doesn't work up when it comes to us in Europe, not even close. We have the potential to be so much better than we are - which currently is also rans who can't win knock out games. Nobody at board level seems to want to make any changes to improve that status - hence the frustration/anger.

The hatred comes from him saying about giving a set of our supporters enough rope to hang themselves. For me that’s where it stemmed from anyway.

We have not won a single European knockout tie since Lawwell has been in a position of significant power at the club, whilst we have continually downsized on the park. We are completely dominating domestically, nobody could argue otherwise, and every fan has loved that domestic success. It also cannot be denied that for most of the seasons in recent times, we would have had to completely capitulate not to be dominating and winning trophies.

Europe is the acid test for us. Our finances mean that we absolutely should be dominating here at home. When we come up against teams similar to us in Europe though, we have been regularly embarrassed for over a decade now. We don’t give ourselves the best possible chance in Europe, because we have a board that has zero ambition.

Don't get me wrong mate, I know exactly where they're coming from. We all want to see us with quality players doing well in Europe, nobodies arguing with that. But I'm no sure where the level of expectation comes from, given our last 50 years in Europe.
