Never understand why Newcastle sold him to us for pennies after fantastic loan spells.

Also Joe Hart going from Shrewsbury in League 2 to 1st Choice at Man City within 2 years.

Good to get someone in, can somebody please explain why we get new players in on long contracts ie 5 years when we don’t know if they will make the grade here?

Because if we bring a player in on a one year contract and they do well, there’s a good chance they’ll be gone the next summer for nothing (to somewhere with more financial security). We’d be left carrying out a full rebuild every summer with no money to spend because we wouldn’t make a penny from sales.

Two reasons I can think of. If you buy someone for 5 years at say £2m, you can spread that cost over the length of their contract, up to 5 years. If a year is going financially well you may choose to pay it off on your books early. Also I think it makes it harder for people to run down their contract, and after 3 years you still have a valuable asset rather than after 2.

Thank you for the responses on my question, the issue is if they don’t make the grade or are always injured then you can be stuck with a donkey for 5 years.

Pardew was an arrogant * and didn’t really count what he’d done with us as anything ti be taken into account. He said something about judging him in pre-season when he went back there that basically dismissed anything he done on loan at us as Scottish Football. Never mind the heroics he pulled off in Europe against the likes of Di Natale eh? Arrogant *. Pardew and Warnock is the worst of the arrogant mediocre English managers down there, that have had an opinion on the game up here backfire. Warnock with Van Dijk then his utter embarrassment of a job at Aberdeen.

But the flip side is if we’ve scouted them and have done our job properly, we mitigate that risk, and get them in on a long contract so that if they do what we believe they can we have them secured. We’d be * if when we brought in guys like Dembele or Van Dijk they were on a 2 year deal or something.

Long contracts can backfire but they always make me feel more secure that it’s a signing we’ve thoroughly vetted out. Can still backfire when we do tbh, all signings have that risky element

Yeah I agree, and I think 4 plus 1 is a better option but you can't move the fee over 5 years doing that. We are now at a point where Nawrocki, Yuki, Lagerbielke, Kwon, Tilio and Yang all have 4 years left. I can see at least 3 of them being here right to the end.

    * sake, that’s about £12m/£14m odd as well spent on them for fees, nevermind wages. I still have a slight hope for Yang to grow a brain, he has something there. Slight hope though, very slight.

We blocked a move for Lager in January as well didn’t we?:56:

Weren't there injuries leaving us with 3 CBs at the time? We would have sold Scales last summer had it not been for injuries too.

You hit the nail on the head, if you have done your homework on scouting they should be a hit but that is no guarantee. Looking at our history I suspect the due diligence is done via a 2 minute video, our track record over the last few years is not brilliant, we have signed some diamonds but we have also signed more than our fair share of donkeys.

Welcome Sinisalo, I’m hoping you’re our long term solution in goals, 22, an international, just had a full season with Exeter and won player of the year, really hoping rodgers gives him chances around schmeichel and succeeds him in 1-3 years at most. One prospect I’m really glad we’ve signed AND more than a few villa fans are * they sold him, especially so cheaply at £1m, bargain,we hope

just read somewhere that Schmeichels contract is for 1 year with an option for a further year so we may be seeing our new young number 2 a lot quicker, again, here’s hoping it’s because he’s so capable.

Seems like a solid signing with the long term in mind. Schmeichel for next season and maybe the season after and hopefully Sinisalo progresses well during that time to be able to take over after Schmeichel moves on or retires. Wonder will we maybe see him some appearances in the league cup this season. Time will tell but certainly on the gk front the moves we have made make sense and look good for next season.

VILJAMI SINISALO wants to be Celtic’s No 1 — and has vowed to push Kasper Schmeichel all the way.

The Finnish keeper penned a five-year deal when he joined from Aston Villa for £1million last week

Veteran Danish skipper Schmeichel then signed a one-year contract.

Sinisalo, 22, knew the 37-year-old would be joining for the short-term, while he is there for the long-term.

But he’s determined to play as soon as possible, and said: “I’m here to win. I’m here to win as much as I can and I want to play. I want to be Celtic’s No 1 and that’s what we’re all here for. There is a long-term plan in place.

“I signed a five-year contract, but I’ll do my very best to make sure I’m Celtic’s No 1 as soon as I can be.

That’s my goal and I want to be playing at Celtic Park every weekend, and every other week in Europe as well.

“That’s what I want. I’m sure we’ll get to that.

“I knew Kasper was coming in and there’s a plan for me.

“But I want to be Celtic’s goalie and I want to show that to everyone.

If that takes six months, if that takes a year, if it takes two, I’ll be ready for that moment whenever it arises.

“I’ve got huge respect for Kasper. But we’re both here for the same reason.

It won’t be his first taste of Scottish football — and he’s hoping it’ll be better than his last one.

Back in 2020, when football was tentatively starting up again in mid-Covid fan-free stadiums, Sinisalo was farmed out to Ayr United for the experience

He was just 18 and had never lived alone before, never mind during a period when nobody was allowed to mix.

He stayed in a flat just along the road from the Royal Troon links and admits it wasn’t easy at times.

He recalled: “It helps that I’ve lived in Scotland before.

“Ayr was my first experience in men’s football and I learned so much. It was character-building — it was the pandemic, and I was living on my own for the first time ever, since moving to the UK

Obviously, nothing was open. It was Covid, there were no fans at games, no coffee shops to visit after training. You couldn’t really get out.

“You get used to playing in different conditions and different things are required of you."

Sinisalo isn’t the first Finnish goalie to arrive at the top level here.

Antti Niemi became a hero for Hearts after initially joining Rangers.

He was immortalised in that famous radio phone-in clip when a caller suggested he should be selected for Scotland by Craig Brown.

When it was pointed out he was Finnish, the caller replied that he was only 28!

I’ve heard that clip a couple of times. It’s funny. But Antti is a great man and works for Finland now
