Celtic are in talks with Benfica over a potential deal for Bernardo

Bernardo spent last season on loan at the Scottish champions and there is an option-to-buy clause in the deal for a fee of around £6.5m.

However, it is understood discussions have taken place over potentially lowering the fee.

Bernardo is believed to be keen on a permanent transfer to Celtic after being told he is not in Benfica's plans for next season

Genuinely think we were far too hasty in letting Jenz go. Would have liked to have seen how he continued for the final 6 months of the season. We replaced him with * Kobayashi as well, which ended up being a disaster.

Glad to see we are looking at lowering the price. Price is far too high for what he has shown this season.

As I’ve said multiple times, not against signing him but it had to be on reduced terms so I’m happy to see the club are looking at that.

Portugal u21 captain. Shown in fits and starts how he can play but as a few have said £4m max would be my cut off point

4 mill with an extra 5 percent or so on the sell on is fair to all I reckon. Hopefully opening the door for our 24/25 loan to buy deal with them. While I want the fee lowered we shouldn't try do our usual penny pinching to * relations with benfica either.

For me I would like us to sign a more experienced midfielder and develop Odin and Kelly. If we got him for around the £3m then that would mitigate things. We know the board is not going to give Rodgers a War Chest and to spend £6m on a player that doesn't make us stronger seems daft.

Semantics maybe but to me that's not really lowering the fee, just structuring it differently.

We buy to sell on eventually so to me that doesn't improve any deal.

They got any keepers or left backs of the level of Jota?

Effectively helps cover potential losses though.

If he didn't develop as we would hope, then we aren't out of pocket 6m.

£4m or so would be a great deal, I could see it happening. Him and Sanches in and we're laughing.

We'd still sell him in that scenario so any add-on still adds to the initial price, unless we say sell-on is only for anything above a certain price. Is that how sell-ons normally work?

They tend to be one of two, a percentage of the next sell on fee or a percentage of any profit we make.

Say we sign him for 6m and enter a percentage of profit in the deal. If we don't sell him for more than 6m, benfica would get nothing off us.
If it's a straight up percentage of the fee (say 20%) they'd then get another 1.2m off us, but we would only get 4.8m of the deal, meaning it would cost us 7.2m to have had a flop.

Bring that down to 4m purchase and the potential loss we make is less, should he flop.

No question Jenz is a much better player than Kobayashi. The big German seemed to really like playing fir us too. But that ship has sailed. Hopefully we get Kobayashi sold this summer though.

Thats probably and hopefully what will end up happening. Its a win win for everyone really. We pay a more reasonable fee up front but if Bernardo does a Jota we still end up making a profit after him playing great for us and Benfica pocket some decent extra money.

Usually the sell on is only for a percentage of any profit made on a transfer. So if he did do really well for us and we sell him at a profit while yes Benfica would get a cut of that profit we would still have made a profit ourselves and we of course would only be in that position because Bernardo had developed and played really well for us.

Not sure it should be if it's a loan to buy.

Bernardo's stats speak for themselves. He isn't worth the £6million being mooted. Do I trust Celtic to get someone better for £6million. Yes I do.
