£6m isn’t a bargain. It would be the 5th or 6th highest fee we have ever paid for a player in our history. £1.5m on O’Riley is a bargain.

It isn’t 2000/2001 anymore. If he signs permanently, smashes it, and eventually leaves for a large fee, there’s no doubt that £6m will have been a bargain. Just a few years ago he was extremely highly rated at Benfica as their best academy product. In today’s market, getting the opportunity to take a guy like that and develop him to reach his potential for £6m is a bargain and no mistake.

It’s not. He needs to reach that potential and he’s shown glimpses of being a decent enough midfielder at times this season.

For £6m, there are young midfielders out there who could come in and do far more than Bernardo has done. Especially with injuries to Hatate and McGregor that we have had, it’s not like he’s nailed down a starting berth.

Seems to be a great deal of revisionism about his overall contribution over the course of this season. Jota and CCV were rightly £6m. They showed they were absolutely worth that, probably worth more. Bernardo hasn’t shown enough for me.

Yeah I kinda agree with all this. I like him, but the terms of the deal aren't great if as reported (£6m with 30% sell on). That's what we paid to get CCV and Jota on perms, and it was justified. Bernardo hasn't shown he can come in and be an instant starter or instantly improve our starting XI yet, which is what I'd expect if we're shelling out that amount of money.

Tiago Dantas, on loan at Alkmaar who are sending him back to Benfica because he’s been *. The buy out option was a paltry £2.5m…

There are some incredible players who have captained Portugal u21s and some absolute * diddys. Means * all.

I just think there are better options out there. If this was a proper, well run football club, where we would spend £50m in the summer on 8/9 players, while adding some excellent youths, I’d sign him because the risk would be far lower. This is Celtic and if we pay £6m for a player, he coming into be first choice. It’s that simple. Who’s he replacing in that midfield then? He’s replacing O’Riley and that makes us far weaker when we should be strengthening.

Fabio Viera and Vitinha have also recently captained Portugal u21s. Some excellent players but I’d take u21 international football with a pinch of salt.

Stephen Welsh was captaining Scotland u21s for years.

Imo no matter what we spend we're not replacing him anyway. He's now a £25m+ player. It'll take a season or two for someone to get to that level. I'd replace hatatte with bernardo, and spend big for orileys. Maybe hatatte will decide to be good next year though? Who knows. Think the team will be totally unrecognisable next year. Exciting times ahead.

One thing I really like about him is his attitude. Hasn't been playing much recently the last few months but when he has come on he's contributed really positively

Aye they all have cool names.. Welsh actually looked like he had a bit of ability for his age and then we had him stagnate on the bench. Should have been loaned out for years. Instead he plays like an inexperienced 18 year old.

Agreed. Probably time to sell him now. Even though I still quite like him.

The point is that he will go on to prove it a bargain, despite his limited progress this year. It's a matter of having the foresight to see how it can pan out for him and us, given the right conditions. Think you're putting far too much emphasis on the fee rather than the potential he has.

There’s not enough evidence to suggest that’s the case, though. Everything comes down to fee and potential for us. Jota was £6m and worth every single penny of it after the season he had. I don’t get that from Bernardo. He’s not shown enough to warrant that sort of investment.

For me, I think you can find a far more experienced, more consistent performer at a similar age for around the same price. He’s not a £6m signing for me.

Still think we should be looking for better in the £6 million range tbh but he's not a bad player and produced a few good moments for us.

    6 m is a going rate for Portugal under 21 captain ….
1.5 million at the time for a league 1 player was the going rate maybe wee bit generous ovb the way he’s turned it became a bargain
