Forgot he won that as well.

The equivalent to us telling Neymar to do a trial this season for us, in fact no it's not, because Rivaldo is(was) much better of course.

But could you imagine if we had the chance to sign someone like Neymar (ignoring the fact he's a * for a moment), and we asked him to do a trial for us ? We would be laughed at by all of football.

Yeah, which was what I meant when I said "Martin O'Neil copped the flack for that"...
Back in those days it was O'Neil who done the talking, but Lawwell would be signing off on the money and I would be very surprised if he wasn't involved in insisting on seeing the player in action before committing to the deal. MON would know all about the player and would know how he was regards fitness etc. The trial before spending had (as we've discovered since) Lawwells stamp all over it, but O'Neil was fronting the conversations and would be the one who said it.

Aye I know but still, it's still way too early for the panic posts. We've actually had 3 or 4 rumours already end of December. I'd say Araujo will be done and then a striker or winger after, to begin.

That way you phrased that last sentence reminded me of ‘A Christmas Carol’.

Rangers were dead: to begin with.

Not getting my hopes up this time. I genuinely can't ever remember being as disappointed by a window as I was last summer, because I went into it with total confidence that we were going to strengthen. Everything seemed in place. The money was there, all the talk was that the recruitment structure was now in place and to go out and get Brendan Rodgers so quickly after Ange left seemed like a real statement of intent. I still can't quite believe that we had a negative net spend in the end and ended up weaker than we went in.

I know some of the money went on the new contracts and that was worth it; but even so, I was honestly shocked. We're still weaker now than we were a year ago.

Lot of catching up on the MoTM polls @Keano88.

Saying that most where probably "nul points" up until a few weeks ago anyway.

It is too early but I remember also thinking this in the summer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in panic mode just now either, but I wouldn’t have a pop at anyone who is either, because after the summer, there is zero trust that this board are competent enough to bring in what we need this window. Or any window for that matter.

Some of the deadwood we have really is poor. I mean, it needs to just be dealt with as urgently as possible.

This is who I would like to see moved on in January and then the summer to free up the space we need.

    January OUTs with NO FUTURE

    Benjamin Siegrist
, not getting game time and clearly wants to move on. Contract runs for another 2 seasons but will clearly take a move to be closer to his bird in Australia. Would let him leave for nothing, to be honest but I think we could probably get £250k or something from an Australian team. +£250k

Gustaf Lagerbielke, just not worked out for him here and I doubt he ever makes it here with his lack of pace. He certainly doesn't look a bad player and he's going to be one of them players who does very well for a team who don't play a high line. We paid £3m for him but can see us getting at least £2m back for him, from a team somewhere in Europe. His performances in Sweden are still worthy of a £2m price tag for me. +£2.25M

    Yuki Kobayashi,
never making it here and I believe he was signed on a free. Unlikely that we will get a fee for him right now and his likely destination will be back in Japan, similar to Ideguchi. Go back home, play well and earn a full time move there from next season. Could maybe get a nominal fee of £750k for him or something after a season over there, like Ideguchi. +£3m

    Alexandro Bernabei,
yeah, not happening here either and we all know it. Surprisingly, he's still very well thought of back home in Argentina and the move to Europe could still be on if Italian clubs firm up their interest. We spent nearly £4m on him and we will get nowhere near that but we will definitely be able to recoup half of that. A sale of £2m makes a lot of sense but I can see him going out on loan first, probably for 6 months or so. +£5m

    Kwon,
still one of the strangest signings I believe we have ever made. However, it's clear he's not going to be favoured here and it's time to cut our losses and move him on. The club paid nearly £1m for him and it's very unlikely we get anywhere near that, this time around. However, another one who could go out on loan to the K1 league for a season and make us some money back, if he performs well over there in the top league, we could probably get £500k back or something. +£5.5m

    David Turnbull,
splits the Celtic support a lot, does Davie T. I like him and I think his stats are incredible for a midfielder but he just doesn't have enough in his locker to be part of our midfield as a 1st team player. Contract is also up, come July and he is now able to sign for another club for nothing, on a pre-contract. Likely we will do a deal with a team so they can get him in now. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect £500k in a deal for him, now. +£6m

    Yoseuke Ideguchi,
I think we all know that he's moving on to the champions, in Japan. Vissel Kobe have already tied that deal up, believed to be about £1m. Or just under. For the sake of a £100k, I've just added £1m to the potential total we could recieve. +£7m

    James McCarthy,
£15k a week, 4 year deal. Still has over a year and a half left at this point. I don't see anything likely other than him seeing out his contract and even then, I've said we should pay off his contract. Would cost the club about £1m to do that but I believe it would free up another space in the midfield to utilise someone else. I have no issues with the guy, personally. I think he had to sign the contract but the club need to cull the squad and he needs to be moved on. £1m worth of wages paid back, so we lose £1m for the total we could receive. +£6m

    Mikey Johnston,
we have all tried and to be fair, so has he. It's never going to work for him here and he needs to go and play somewhere else. He probably wants to get away from here, now. While, it's not going to work for him here, I believe we can and should receive a decent figure for him, certainly over £1m. He will go down to the championship and play well when he's not up against packed defenses every week. Time for us to cut the cord and let him go, permanently. +£7m

    Marco Tilio,
another one who was brought in during the summer which hasn't worked out and I don't think will ever work out. More than likely brought in because of the city group link. He's going to be the same as the Ideguchi/Kwon deals, where we will need to loan him out for a season with a view to a permanent deal come the following season. Australia is his likely destination but would not surprise me to see a Korean or Japanese team come in for him. A loan deal suits all parties and that gives us the platform to sell next season. He cost the club £1.5m and if we could recoup half of that, we would be doing very well. +£7.75m

    Johnny Kenny,
no chance we get any fee for him. He's on absolute buttons with a season left on his contract. Pay it up and let him find a club somewhere else. Read somewhere that he's only on £1000 a week. Give him a big lump sum and send him on his way. Another space we free up.

So, with all these sales in January 2024 and the Loan deals we make, we could reasonably expect to make nearly £8m in sales, if we do it right. The guys above are never making it here and it's this month we need to be getting them off our books and freeing up space. We have a squad of 33 players! That is far too bloated. We also have 3 players out on loan who I will get to soon. The next part is loans out with a future still possible here.

    January OUTS with FUTURE

    Odin Thiago Holm
, we all like him and we all believe there is a player there but he needs regular game time. Hibernian have been trying to play really good football on the deck and he would definitely suit their style of play. Think he should be loaned out there, with the view of getting regular game time and minutes to get his career continuing on the path we all hope. I would want him back in the summer to assess where we are with him but again, if he needs another full season somewhere? Let's do it. He's only 20 years old.

Yang, I've actually changed my mind about him. I think we should keep him and get him regular minutes. He has shown in the last few games that there is definitely something there but he needs minutes and he's not going to get enough of that here. Consistent minutes in a decent attacking team would do him the world of good. I've said Hibernian for Holm but I definitely think Aberdeen would work well for Yang. He's 21 years old, I don't think he has the time that Holm has but he's got to show something in these next 6 months for me and that has to be away from Celtic.

    Summer Outs

Really, the 3 guys out on loan right now. Haksabanovic, Montgomery and Shaw. Could probably get a bit of money for them but I wouldn't expect mega millions. I think we could get about £2m for them all though, with both Hacksa and Shaw playing regularly and Montgomery getting game time.

    The Big Sales

    Matt O'Riley,
we know it's coming. The club will be demanding top dollar for him and it should be a record fee. £30m. I wouldn't be selling him in January unless it's for unbelievable money , £40m plus. We do know that this is going to be his final season with us and he will go on to the very top. +£30m

    Liel Abada,
I thought the young man would be away this window but I don't think that will happen. He's definitely here until the summer and I think he will likely want to move on then. For a variety of different reasons and not just because of the whole political furore that has gripped the club over the last few months. He's been here 3 seasons, he will probably want to try something new and test himself at the highest level. We will be asking for a large fee for him, of that I have no doubt. We should be asking for £15m but I don't think we will get that much. I think we could get a figure around £12m. +£42m

    Reo Hatate,
I'm not sure if this is a likely sale or not. It's certainly not as likely as the two above but with the way things are with him, he may want to go to the next level. We know he wanted to wait until the window was over before he signed a new deal and even then, I'm not sure he signed it with the intent on staying here long term. However, he's someone we should get getting a large sum of money for and I expect us to demand that large sum. I'd be asking for £20m, he's worth that for me. +£62m

That's a lot of bodies out the door. 11 players out the door with no future, 2 players out the door with the potential to come back into the squad, 6 players out in the summer, 3 big sales and 3 sales from loaned out players. That's a grand total of 17 players out, not including Holm and Yang, who I expect would be back here in the summer fighting to be part of the squad. You also have about £70m worth of sales in there. Could be a huge next couple of windows.

Totally agree with You in regards to the board, It seems that We are back to waiting to see who becomes available instead of planning ahead early for the window opening and getting our targets signed early.
