    Couldn't toast the man last night as I had a job to finish off today, but have now settled down with 4 guinness and a half bottle of Jamesons, and the guitar is coming out for a night of celebration of one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

    Sad to hear that he's gone . I was lucky enough to see him ( with the Pogues ) three times . But look on the bright side , he has left an amazing legacy of songs/lyrics . Rest in peace Shane .

    Noel Gallagher always talks about 'great songs and melodies falling from the sky, you need to be there every day waiting to catch them, or someone else will'.

    This is one of those melodies. Shane has tried to fit in words and phrases to the verses that don't really fit, but come the chorus he found the magic. In fact, I'd wager the melody for 'it's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me' fell from the sky, and he mustered the rest of the song just to pad it out.

    Pure magic.
