Have actually thought that myself this year. He’s 30 now and it has just seemed like where has the time gone!
But have wondered who will replace him. Can’t see anyone coming through the ranks as he had or even at other Scottish clubs (a la broony) but it is something that should be being considered now.

Might be already with the likes of Holm or Bernardo.

See when talking about replacing McGregor are we talking about as a captain or as a midfielder. As good as a player that McGregor is I actually wonder if we try and replace him like for like or revert to more of a physical player and defensive minded relying more on others to play out?

Anyway my controversial opinion is that by the end of the summer 24 transfer window I think up to 6 key members of our first team squad may move on, with 5 of those looking for a move to a bigger league. Leaving us with a pretty big rebuilding job.

Look, I know it's much too early to say if Scales can keep this standard up; but hypothetically, if he can keep it up and is still playing to this standard, say, a year from now, he seems to have the mentality to be a future captain.

How is that a controversial opinion? "Scales might be captain if he's good enough".

Controversial is something like "I believe that Larsson died when he broke his leg and was replaced by a dreadless lookalike who was even better".

The trebles are certainly not expected, but a league season where we have the best players; the biggest budget; best resources and experience of winning titles we absolutely as a fan base should expect to win the league every year. That's not entitlement it's just simply a failure if it's not achieved.

The way the league cup was reformatted means we essentially have to win 3 games to get to win that, and the Scottish Cup we've always been strong favourites for.

Doing 4 trebles in a row is a mental run of success though, unprecedented actually. That should never be played down.

OK, OK. Got it. Alright then, here goes:

When I watch old footage and I look closely, I'm not fully convinced the Derk Boerrigter song was entirely anatomically accurate. There. I've said it. :54:

My controversial opinion, is that young home grown players don’t get enough opportunities in our first team.

The excuse that many will use, is that most are not good enough and there is too much pressure to win the league every year and so we don’t have the luxury of waiting for prospects to develop.

But then we often see players come into the team when there is an injury crisis and do well… but it’s more by accident really. We don’t seem to have any coherent plan as a club, to phase out older players and gradually replace them with younger players - like say the Dutch or Portuguese clubs do regularly. When they sell one of their top players on, they always seem to have a player earmarked as a replacement and it’s a reasonably smooth process. We seem to always be caught flapping around trying to make a quick fix signing in these scenarios.

I think as a club, we are plagued by a lot of short term thinking which ultimately hurts our long term prospects of developing a high quality team that could maybe progress further in Europe.

Really it takes a manager (or series of them) to have the courage to promote youth while also maintaining a high standard of performance in the league every week. I’m not saying it’s easy to do, but it can be done. The fact is though, it really needs to be a club ethos and something that you actively promote as a club just like a style of play for example.

I’ve always been quite embarrassed by how few Scottish players we have in our starting 11 most weeks. It really should be part of our culture as a club to develop high quality home grown players, when you look at our history with the Lisbon lions and quality street kids etc… this used to be a big part of our club’s identity.

But we’ve basically abandoned this for quick fix signings in the last 20 years. I’m not anti-foreigner in any way… there is a place for quality signings obviously. It just frustrates me that so few of our fans seem to care about this aspect or the pride we used to have as a club in producing our own players. Guys like Maestro for example, are a big part of why I started supporting our club. I do wonder if those days will ever return in my lifetime or ever really!?

Sorry, bit of a rant there! lol

Part of the issue is the guys who are good enough are now being poached by the likes of Bayern, Liverpool, Leeds etc. So we don't even get the chance to see some of them in the first team before they leave.

No my controversial opinion. But talking in the work van with a couple of older guys who lean towards the huns......they were saying in the late 70s and 80s Danny McGrain was well known as a dirty player.

I was only born in 84'. So I cant remember McGrain playing for us at the time. But anytime I've watched old footage of him he's just looked a stand out class act. Also from the way other ex players talk about him...they have nothing but admiration for him.

These two guys in the van though assure me that he was a dirty player. Cannae imagine that. Terry Hurlock....there was a dirty player.....surely no Danny

Thats me exactly. I never stop thinking about those times while we are having such success in the present day. I started going in the Lou Macari season and it was diabolical. Rangers pumped us most of the time....and on the occasion when we did sneak a win against them our fans celebrated like we just won the league. Even although we'd be sitting 4th. We finished 4th for 2 years in a row. We were going and playing teams like Motherwell expecting to get beat. It was truely awful. And the way the old board tried to put positive spin on everything in the Celtic View.....the new stadium in Cambuslang pish....it was just embarassing. That was some plan that from Kelly.....a whole stadium just given to us.....all paid for by Glasgow City Council. Aye like that was going to happen

I think about those times a lot and try and fully appreciate every bit of success we have today....cause I too remember the great depression and how * times were

It's crazy. It used to be that if you developed a world-class player like Dalglish, then a Liverpool would come along and take them at some point. Working from his Wikipedia article, Dalglish appears to have been around 26 when he left for Liverpool. Nowadays, they come and get kids who merely look like they might have a chance of being world-class. The ludicrous concentration of wealth is doing very strange things now. You've got insanely talented kids rotting away for lack of game time at elite clubs and less talented kids making it because they get the game time. It's unimaginable that someone like Lubo would have stayed at his Slovakian club until his mid-20's and then brought joy to the likes of St Etienne, Bastia or us or these days.

Just another reason why I mainly only watch Celtic now. They've broken the game.

Not any dirtier than any other left/right back in that era, hard tackling, up and down the park and a shot a rugby kicker would be proud of
