Exclusive: Celtic misfit Derek Riordan set for cut-price return to Hibs - The Daily Record

Exclusive: Celtic misfit Derek Riordan set for cut-price return to Hibs

Aug 26 2008 By Gordon Parks
DEREK Riordan is poised to complete a sensational return to boyhood heroes Hibs.
The frozen-out Celtic striker's switch back to Easter Road for a fee of around s100,000 is on course to be completed before the close of the transfer window on Monday.
Riordan, 25, has endured a nightmare two-year stint at Parkhead where he's publicly fallen out with Hoops boss Gordon Strachan over his lack of first-team opportunities.
But the Scotland striker, who still has a year left on his Celtic contract, is on the verge of kick-starting his career where it all began.
Strachan snapped up the Edinburgh-born attacker in a s300,000 summer swoop back in 2006.
Now the SPL champions are willing to write off a transfer fee loss in order to get him off their wage bill.
It's also believed Riordan would accept a drop in salary for a fresh start in a bid to rediscover the form that saw him hit 64 goals in 146 appearances before his ill-fated switch to Parkhead.
Leith boss Mixu Paatelainen revealed yesterday he wants to sign another striker. And he is about to get his man, though it's highly unlikely he will play in Hibs' Co-operative Insurance Cup clash with Morton at Easter Road tonight.
Riordan killed off his Celtic chances when he slammed Strachan in April.
Riordan had said: "I only get chucked on when we need a goal so he must think I can get him one.
"But he obviously doesn't want to do it unless he really has to because he doesn't want me to prove him wrong. When I speak to him, he says I'm part of his plans but you know by his actions that he is talking rubbish."

Good riddance to him. He ruined it for himself. He's to blame not Strachan.

really want to know what went on behind the scenes regarding strachan and riordan. the guy is undoubtably a very talented player and deserved a better chance, really is a wonder what happened.

Dont think he was right for the club from day one. Didnt rate him when we signed him, dont rate him now, was a success at hibs but let himself down when he joined celtic, i think he had the attitude (I will walk onto this team with ease) because he did it with hibs but our clubs a different ball game you hafta work to play for us week in week out.

Its a shame because he could have turned out to be a good player for us. Obviously behind the scenes activity has prevented that. Ive heard he likes his drink as well, just hope that if this move comes about he doesnt chuck it away. We have seen too many young lads in Scottish football with bright futures that * it away

think it was his fondness of the columbian marching powder that was his downfall tbh.

I'll never forget WGS interview about Aiden McGeady after the Benfica home game last season. It was something like:

"Aiden McGeady is one of the players who you will always see in the gym after training and is always one of the last to leave. These are the players who you happen to find are on the team sheet every weekend"

it was a clear hint to the Celtic fans to why Deek never got a game.

Good riddance to a talented waster.

I drive past him in his fancy M5 at half past 9 on Kilsyth Road every single morning and i think to myself 'i'm going to work to knock my * pan in to earn a pittance when this idiot earns thousands and thousands for doing what he loves and has wasted it all by being a * with an attitude problem'

I think the folk blaming Strachan over Riordan's complete lack of application need a serious reality check.
