Steven Gerrard might not be worth £50 million, nobody is, but he is by far and away the best midfielder that the British Isles have produced in the modern generation, that's for sure.

Different types of players but there are few weak links in Gerrard's armoury. He's strong, powerful, uses the ball well, tackles well and scores plenty of goals. He leads by example. He has carried that Liverpool team single-handedly some years.

Scholes has been a superb player but he isn't strong, he isn't powerful and, defensively, he's a liability.

 

He's a good EPL player but has he ever had a good game for his country yet?
