I checked out the most expensive transfers and their date(but only last 10yrs) on Transfermarkt. Just to see the link between our more expensive transfers and the quality.

    1. Jota 31/8/21
    2. Edouard 31/08/17
    3. Jullien 01/07/19
    4. Simunovic 01/09/15
    5. CCV 31/08/21
    6. Ajeti 13/08/21
    7. Furuhashi 19/7/21
    8. Nawrocki 26/7/23
    9. Stafelt 21/7/21
    10. Barkas(sick) 28/7/23
    11. Bernabei 1/7/22
    12. Sinclair 7/8/15
    13. Klimala 14/1/20
    14. Abada 14/7/21
    15. A Johnston 1/1/23
    16. Kouassi 12/1/17
    17. Bolingoli 4/7/19
    18. Holm 1/7/23
    19. Juranovic 21/8/21
    20. Tunbull 27/8/20

It shows the later we sign players, often the higher the quality. As well we signed some amount of dross! Specially in the 2-3mil bracket!

But even top transfers under Ange were often late(r) signings: Giakoumakies 31/8, O'reilly 20/1, Harte 3/8, Oh 25/1, Mooy 19/7 Haksa 25/8. Notable difference are Hatate/Maeda 1/1.

I keep saying. The players we should be targeting will be on the radar of similar sized clubs.

They may be 2nd or 3rd choice so might want to hold out to see what happens elsewhere.

When you are a big successful, relatively rich club in league terms you might need to be patient to get the player you want.

Or we could just go out and hoover up any old dafty and pay them over the odds, because Fenians.

He hasn't got a clue about our usual transfer policy, does he?

That was really enlightening. I'm a better person for reading that.

    Thank you to everyone involved.

That kind of gives me the fear tbh.

We've entered a cultural stage in football where players, rightly so, are more finally minded and looking to maximize their earnings. All fine and dandy.

But being a players second or even third choice doesn't sit well with me.

A player who "settles" for us is likely to have one or two attitudes. Play out if their skin for that original move they wanted, or toss on the shirt and take a wage.

When I read "other options" or "weighing up options" I automatically have that cretin Viduka in mind.
Did a job for us aye, but the * around from him at nearly every stage of his Celtic career was abysmal.

Totally understand that quality players will always have competition for their signature, but if a player receives an approach from us and replies with a "wait and see" , we should wait a while, then move on.

We're not * Watford. We're Celtic Football Club, an institution in the game, playing on the biggest stage in world football, where domestic medals are there to be won, and careers are forged.
We shouldn't need to wait too long on a player.

There will be players happy to play for us if they dont get Spain or England and now Saudi.

The players we want will be aware and we need to be patient. Bookmark this post. I think we will spend at least 25 million in the next 5 weeks. Maybe some loan to buys on deadline day.

I think we'll be in good shape come matchday one CL

Whilst I agree with your last paragraph, that's still a very romantic way to look at it. These guys will have options in other countries with stronger domestic leagues, better climates, potentially a culture that suits them and their family more.

Players who jump at us with no second thought will be the likes of Barkas, Ajeti, Klimala etc who weren't good enough in the first place.

    25 mil?!

Jaysus, wish I had your confidence!

I think we will definitely spend money, easily over the 10m mark more, but whether that's on one or two players I'm not so sure.

Nawrocki didn't wait for long, as far as we know. O'Riley could've stayed in England, but no. Went here like a rocket when approached and seems likely to stay for his third season.

I think a psychologist should be part of the scouting team. Try and find out the personality of a prospective signing. Single out those driven purely by money and avoid them. Prioritize those who want to play regularly and develop.

Wonder where the record funds for an incoming Celtic manager story come from? Was it some Jurno who's heard or knows someone or someone like us knows Rodgers left last time due to being unable to get the level of player required to take us forward (I.e lack of funds) so the fact he's back must mean he has a war chest? So basically just guessing like rest of us.

I would find it strange Rodgers coming back if he was to be shopping in the projects market.

I think so far realistically the Polish boy is maybe the only player he has said go and get me. I'm sure he had sign off on the others but would not have been players he identified

Edit: I do find it worrying Rodgers says nothing until after the Ross County game. We must be a good bit off still which makes me think we keep getting rejected.

I think that's ideal but if that's not going to work with every player. Avoiding ones who care about money would lose us so much quality. It would probably lose us transfer fees. Id also question the attitude of a player who wasn't a Celtic fan that wanted to come to Celtic and not move to bigger and better things.

I will happily join you on Mount Doom if that doesn't come to pass :giggle1:

To be brutally honest I think that it's the least we will spend. Should actually be spending more.

I've stuck 2 mars bars in the freezer though. Just incase.

There is a healthy level of ambition. IMO, Hatate has that. Kyogo might have a loyal streak in him. But people point at the example of Viduka as something to avoid. I'd add Ntcham and Edouard to that group. Yes, great ability, but they want all the attention on them (bad team players) and want to * off at the very first opportunity.

If we're courting a "big" name right now that seems to only look at us as a last resort option, it's likely we're best off not even wasting our time. Tete didn't even have the guts to outright refuse us, but played along until everything was sorted with Shakhtar so he could leave them. Suddenly we hear it's Napoli that want him, then Fenerbahce...we've been had.

We should have self-respect as a club.

For years it was always "players are waiting to see if we are in UCL or not, we need the UCL to lure them in"

Now we've got it, it's "aye but the players are waiting on other clubs to make the UCL to choose them over us"

    Just * sign someone :56:

We need to evolve our way of thinking.

Whichever ‘marquee’ player we sign in the next few weeks let’s just accept right now he’ll be gone in 2 years, maybe even 1 year. He knows it, we know it.

This is football now. Let’s accept it and make it work. There’s absolutely no reason it can’t work really well for us.
