It's South Korean "culture". Under American influence (show-biz), physical appearance has been put high in terms of importance- and people try to conform to ideals. Men use cosmetics and do plastic surgeries, let alone women. Jo is viewed as supremely handsome, and of course, likes the attention and keeps the image up. I honestly prefer North Korea in this aspect: keep things simple and disciplined, and stick to your job.

But I don't think Jo is self-absorbed in the sense of Ronaldo. The fact that he chose to heed the words of Ji-sung Pak- a Korean legend over his own wishes tells me he behaves in a typical Korean manner: polite and respectful of elders' authority.

To correct myself, it's actually a thing in Japan and on Taiwan as well. Confucianism. But there are positives- like following rules, unlike South and East Europe, where I'm from. We'd have liked Jo to be braver in exploring his options. But this has a flip side. A very ambitious guy will pull stunts off if things aren't going his way. Most I expect Jo to do, or have done is beg JS Pak and Sang-sik Kim to be allowed to fulfill his dreams.
Loyalty to friends is another Korean characteristic. He has friends at Jeonbuk, and because of them, he won't get stroppy. Of course, a close friend is calling from Mainz, and he's torn.
We're out of luck, TBH. Ange has no experience in Korea, and I expect this market to be abandoned. I know I'd have talked to the player personally, and promised him game-time- at least 1 start for each 2 of Kyogo's. Verbally and in written. On top of telling him about our club. Perhaps Ange has done this, perhaps not.

Nothing strange in players from East Asia being at less than full fitness at this time. But I agree this is a cop-out. He'd get the Iwata treatment, and that's that. Get ready in a few weeks, and then you're in, son. Unless he's carrying an injury, this excuse does not hold up.

IMO, he wanted Mainz above everyone else. They couldn't stump up the necessary cash, or maybe even wouldn't (strikers were due to return). I think he still wants Mainz.

South Korea international Cho Gue-sungwants to delay a move away from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors due to the striker's concerns over his fitness, claims his agent.

Gue-sung and his representatives have spoken openly about interest from Celtic who who had submitted a bid in the region of €3.3million which included a hefty sell-on fee in order to try and tempt the 24-year-old to move to the Scottish Premiership, with Bundesliga side Mainz and MLS out Minnesota both credited with big money bids.
