Steven Gerrard is interested in taking Moussa Dembele to Aston Villa and could land Celtic a windfall, according to a report.

The former Rangers boss could swoop to lure the Frenchman from Lyon in January with his contract set to expire next summer. If his contract is allowed to run down, the Hoops would miss out on getting anything from the sell-on clause they had inserted when they sold him. So any January deal would rescue hopes of landing some cash.

The 26-year-old has often been linked with a move to England with clubs like Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal said to have been interested. And he's fallen out of favour at the Ligue 1 club after the arrival of Alexander Lacazette with several of his seven appearances this season coming off the bench.

It's thought the frontman is keen to wait until the end of the season to become a free agent in order to maximise the options he will have.

However, Lyon would like to sell in January in order to some of the £20million they paid to Celtic, and that would obviously suit the Hoops too.

French media outlet Jeunes Footeux are now reporting that Villa have jumped to the front of the queue.

Gerrard has been criticised for his start to the season with the Midlands side with some supporters even calling for his head and they lie 16th, just two points above the bottom three.

Dembele was with Celtic for three seasons and endeared himself to fans with some big goals, including a hat-trick against Rangers.

Don't see us getting much if any money here if Dembele does move in January. I would assume that the sell on clause would be a percentage of any profit Lyon make. So given his contract is up in the summer its hard to see Lyon even getting 20m for Dembele in January. Our best bet would be that Lyon's new manager really likes Dembele and persuades him to sign a new deal and then maybe he moves for a bigger fee later.

I feel like he wanted to leave Lyon after a season or two. I think it's turned into a bit of a nightmare for him there.

I wonder if salary expectations are the killer like we saw with Denayer because he's far too good to not be getting a move.

Frimpong will be the one we actually make a killing off of on sell on fees, if the idiot Lawwell put one on him - which he surely did, given the pittance he was sold for.

If Aston Villa are looking at him, so should we, FFS.

Hope your right because I don't see us making much if anything on Dembele at this point.

As much as people have a disliking towards Lawell (and most reasons are more than valid) he’s definitely not an idiot.

His ability to get the most money for selling players, which tends to include a nice sell-on clause, is one of the reasons we’ve been in a strong financial position for the past 20ish years, unlike some clubs.

He consistently sold players at an utter pittance.

The only sale I’d give him credit for is Armstrong at £7m.

To be fair to him at those times we couldn’t ask for more for players cos teams wouldn’t pay. Only recently have teams started paying more for players out of the “big leagues” but still not really the worth in our eyes

I’m not a fan of Lawell, but you’re talking *.

Van dijk, Forster, wanyama, Edouard, Ajer, Dembele, Tierney, Frimpong.

Sure, we could have had more money from some of them, but he took a gamble to keep some and also added sell on fees which for us extra money for some like Van dijk.

We have missed out in some players because of the negotiating style. But overall I’d say he did well. It could have been worse, look at sevco.

In hindsight we did well with Wanyama, Forster, hooper and Mcgeady, it's not as if these players were sold on for higher amounts

Even with Dembele, the fact Lyon were happy giving Atletico Madrid a buy clause of €30 m which they didn't take up suggests we did alright getting €22 m

We have a sell on fee, that we won’t get * all off but that’s the gamble innit.

Forgotten Moussa Dembele could reportedly leave Lyon for as as little as £5m in January as the Ligue 1 side look to cash in on the former Celtic striker.

The striker netted 22 goals for the club last season and was linked with a summer exit from France after being the standout performer in a campaign that saw the club finish in a disappointing eighth place, but he opted to remain at the Groupama Stadium and enter the final year of his contract. The summer addition of Alexandre Lacazette from Arsenal has limited Dembele's game time and he has netted just twice this term.

Galatasaray will reportedly look to tempt Lyon into a January sale to avoid the risk of the 26-year-old leaving France for nothing, with several reports in Turkey suggesting an initial bid has already been put on the table. En Son Haber claim that a lowball offer of €5m (£4.3m) has been submitted.

That could have a major impact on Celtic, who agreed a 15 per cent sell on clause when Dembele left Parkhead in 2018 for £19.7m. If Lyon accept that offer, the Scottish Premiership champions will recoup just £645k from the sale of the striker.

The report claims that Dembele is keen on the move to increase his minutes on the pitch. The Super Lig title challengers now await the response from the Ligue 1 side, but it is claimed they expect the initial approach for the frontman to be knocked back

What a * move that would be. Surely there will be suitors from down south for him.

In theory, without a doubt...I'd be * buzzing for getting him at that price and playing under a systems like Ange's that creates so many chances, I'd wager he could get (if remains fit) 40 goals in a season under Ange.

Reality though is he is never stepping foot near the club unless as an opponent
