One huge positive with this link (whether it happens or not) is that we’re fishing in the right pond. I’d much rather be fighting Ajax and PSV for signings than teams like Barnsley and QPR.

First time in years, arguably ever, that I'm confident in our manager to find someone who suits us down to the ground anyway.

If we get him, fantastic, if we don't, it wasn't meant to be and Ange will find someone.

Agree. We also need players/player to stamp their authority on the pitch - ie like a Dalgleish, Souness, Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles and be a fulcrum for the team.

We need to be objective and realistic in our expectatations.

Ask yourself - If you were Souza, where would you choose to play next ? Look at his options. Would Celtic be his first choice ?

This thread is certainly heating up - good to see.

Expect some real news regarding transfers within the next 7-10 days.

Ange will be assembling his players soon for pre-season training and he will want new players in early.

The 2nd string defence looks worrying to me if we have wholesale injury issues. Jullien will go and Welsh is just not good enough imo. Taylor and Ralston will do as back ups but we need 2 centre half's for cover assuming big Chris is sold.

Completely agree... I used to be glued to these threads more in desperation because we were about to start a season with Bitton as our centre half, again... and about 6 players light....now I can relax in the knowledge that Big Ange seems in complete control of our transfers..

If we don't get this lad I have every faith that we'll get someone just as good. Ange/our scouts/ recruitment didn't miss last season.

    https://thecelticbhoys.com/2022/06/18/celtic-vinicius-souza-transfer-problem/

Celtic are in need of a defensive midfielder at this point of time. Scott Brown left the club last summer and then, Nir Bitton called time on his Parkhead career at the end of last season. As a result, it is a void that needs to be filled, especially with Ismaila Soro, James McCarthy and Yosuke Ideguchi, all having struggled to break into Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans till now.

Vinicius Souza is a player Celtic seem to have set their eyes on. The Brazilian midfielder made quite an impression last season while on loan at KV Mechelen. He is currently with Belgian second division side, Lommel SK, who are part of the City Football Group.

It is believed that Souza could head out on loan once again this summer although some rumours have suggested that Lommel SK could be willing to let him go for a transfer fee around €9 million.

A number of clubs around Europe are being linked with Souza as well though. And as reported by the Scottish Daily Mail [18/06 print edition, page 124] (via 67 Hail Hail), he is no rush to decide his playing future. In fact, he could potentially wait until the end of the window to find the best option for him next season.

It goes without saying that that would be a problem for Celtic. Defensive midfield is a position of need for them and not one of luxury.

Under ideal circumstances, they would want to start pre-season with a signing already made there. As a result, if Souza decides to wait before making a decision, that would be a worry for the club, especially since there is no guarantee that they will win the race for the Brazilian midfielder’s signature.

Thus, they could be left scrambling towards the end of the window if they fail to sign Souza, a situation that they surely will want to avoid. So, if the transfer saga drags on, it might be best for the Hoops to turn their attention towards other targets.

Thats quite a fee for a 2nd division Belgian team lol.

£7.7m which not much more than we paid for Jullien

If this lad isn’t going to make a decision in the next week or so, we’ll most likely move on to make sure we get a DM in before the preseason starts.

He is owned by a second tier team to basically be loaned out to higher tier teams and sold. Part of the city group etc. Sounds a lot anyway for me.
I was happy for high amounts for Eddy, Jota and CCV as it was try before you buy.

@McGrory1888 have you heard anything? I’m hoping this is still alive but I get the feeling it’s not happening and we’ve moved on.

I believe we will get Bernabei. Argentina has been having economic issues for some time now and Lanus would be crazy not to accept the Celtic offer for the player. They may want 4 mill for the player at this stage of his young career but they won't get it for a short defender from a lower mid-range club. Celtic pay that money for forwards or CBs, not fullbacks. So Lanus needs to take a good offer and stop bluffing, as well as his manager trying to get a bigger slice of the pie.

Bernabei has the chance to raise his football profile in European games and this can only help in his ambitions to play in the national team and increase his value. He will become an even better player at Celtic under Ange.

Celtic I think will offer 2-2.5 mill to Lanus and offer good terms to the player re salaried contract.

Souza coming to Celtic may be more complicated getting the deal over the line.
