Truth is with such a small voter pool if I had voted, Raging Bull would probs make my top 5 which would have rocketed it up the chart.

Which is why I’m keeping a cool head :giggle1:

A superb film that I could watch once a year forever.

The thing is that people’s Film lists always vary to the extreme. So when you have what you think should be in a top 10, top 20 or top 30 you yourself may very well be very disappointed.
My top Pick Chariots Of Fire barely made Top 40, but I take it on the chin same as Raging Bull fans :84: as plenty of other amazing Films did not gain places as high as I would like. But that is not me voting.
Taz’s Film Threads are brilliant and what we get is a varied taste in Films which is largely unpredictable, which is more than half the fun.

Good points mate, and agree entirely. After all, these results are a culmulative result of folk ranking their favourites - not simply a 'guess what the overall most popular movie is going to be' situation, lol.

As for the Number 1 picks, I highlight each person's top pick not out of vanity, rather so that people can use these as recommendations. There has to be a reason why any given film resonates with someone that they would have it above all else and that alone is reason enough to check it out.

Case in point, overnight I sat through Grave of the Fireflies for the first time. I had heard of it years ago but never really gave it much thought, especially as years have gone on and can't really appreciate animation, but wow, totally deserves to be checked out. It was such a sad tale, and the last half hour... Good pick @Dannybhoy81 :50:

    Anyhow, onto Runaway Train next...

In actual fact, even if you'd given it your number 1, the highest it potentially would've finished is 23rd - and that's not even taking into account the other votes you'd have in the Top 10 etc that would have to be factored in, whihc could've bumped other films in the order around as well, and moved them up also and kept RB from getting that high... let alone anything less than '1' and it is nudged down another place or two. So yeah, cool heads prevail, none the less... unlike Jake LaMotta, :56:

I'm more bewildered by it because I know Raging Bull is a well-known film that most people have watched. When you combine the large viewership with how good a film it actually is, I thought it was a cert to be in the top 15 (minimum). I'm less annoyed* at seeing films like Come And See lower down, which I'd argue is better than RB and was in my top 3, because I know the same sort of viewership isn't there and is thus going to be ranked by fewer people.

*I'm using the term "annoyed" quite loosely here. This isn't going to affect my day in the slightest. It's more just a "what, really?" type thing.

It's a good list, the more "what, really?" type moments, the better. It breaks down your own opinions of what's a good film, while forcing you to view films you'd traditionally gloss over in a different way.

I have certain films that I absolutely love, not because they're particularly ground-breaking, the acting is amazing, or even because they have cinematography that is mind-blowing, but simply because they let me tune out of the world for a period of time, stop my brain thinking, tap into some period in my life that I think of quite fondly, and/or any other reason that isn't specific to the tangible qualities of a film.

Films like Anne of Green Gables, Zardoz, * Tracy, Cobra, The 'Burbs, Field of Dreams, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Englishman That Went Up A Hill & Came Down A Mountain, Whistle Down The Wind, and a few others are the most recent examples to do those exact things.

Raging Bull is without doubt an All Time Great Film, however take me, though I really like it and have seen it 3 times, the last time I saw it was 15 years ago!!! That will soon be sorted out:biggrin:
So we get reminders on here of Films not only we have not seen in ages but Films we have overlooked.
What will be interesting, very very interesting would be a Poll
On our Top overall Films of all time. Now would send all our heads into a Mega Spin!!!:84:

In due course mate. But have some decades and some genres/catagories to do first, but will get there eventually, lol

Exactly mate. The worst thing this list could be is a IMDb top 250 or a BFI Top 100 clone. Those films are very limited in how they're viewed, as they're almost removed from the purely visceral attachments people have with films.

Roll on the next "What, really?".

That’s just wrong sorry. Absolute madness.

Tell you what though. This top 20 is going to be epic going by what’s fell by the wayside.
