Barca are acting like * imo.
    :47:
Messi wanted to go and play with Argentina in the Olyimpics.

Barca said no because they need him for pre-season and CL qualifying.

FIFA stepped in and said that anyone under the age of 23 is ALLOWED to go and play with their country.

Now Barca are taking it to the Sport court! FFS let the boy play.

Messi has said * them and is going to the Argentina camp and will come back if Barca's appeal is succesful.

Disagree. Club before country IMO, Barca pay his wages and are entitled to tell him where he will be playing his football. I may have some sympathy if it was a copa America or world cup, but the olympics?? GTF Messi.

I don't get why Argentine and Brazil are gaga over the Olympics. Seems like everyone else is pretty much using journeyman (if anyone) for overage. Messi is under-23... but he's clearly a full nat and a little beyond that level I should think. Somehow I doubt Argentina is lacking another good young winger worth a punt.

my words. barca would have to suffer the consequences if Messi got injured again. they pay his wages and preseason (CL!) is far more important than a diddy tourny at the olympics.

club before country for me, always! Don't like when players go away with country as they won't pay the wages if they get injured & we end up losing them just like John Kennedy who's career has stalled because of a stupid friendly 4 years ago when he was top of his game!

Why should Barcelona give a * about his Argentina future. It is Barcelona who pay his wages and now have to do without him for some Champions League Qualifier action. Not to mention the risk of him getting hurt. Plus on top of all that it is the * Olympics so it isn't even important.

If it was an important coutnry game, it would be reasonable for to want to go but to want to bother with the ollimpics football is stupid.
Barca have evey right to want him to play for them in important Cl quailfiers and to make sure he is fit

If it was Aiden McGeady and we had CL qualifiers we'd be smashing the house up.

But it's Barca, they can miss him for a couple of games, the young boy wants to go to China and why shouldn't he? The only holiday he got this year was * St Andrews, poor kid.

You put your club before your country in my eyes they pay your wages so their decision should be the one you go with. Just look at Skippy he turned down playing for Australia in the Olympics, The Olympics is a load of * imo anyway.

Actually that one is the clubs' call all the way. As per FIFA clubs can refuse over-age player requests (in fact most probably laugh in the countrys' face), but not under-23. Skippy falls into the former, Messi into the latter. (Unless there is some kind of birthday loophole I'm missing)

Anyway, my view on the whole thing is that should be U23... for development of players. Messi doesn't need any development at that level, he just thinks it's an easy Gold Medal. (Same goes for Ronaldinho who had a similar spat with Barca just a few weeks ago... somehow I doubt AC Milan are letting him go now though.)

    Clubs win ruling over footballers

[IMG] Messi was keen to be with the Argentina squad in Beijing

Three European clubs have won their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) to keep their players out of the Olympic football tournament.
Cas ruled that Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Werder Bremen's Diego and Rafinha of Schalke can be prevented from playing in the Beijing Games.
Barcelona were reluctant to let 21-year-old Messi play in the tournament, although he was keen to take part.
The clubs argued Olympic matches are not part of the international calendar.
Cas said there was "no specific decision of the Fifa executive committee establishing the obligation for the clubs to release players under 23 for this tournament".
A statement added: "In view of Fifa's recommendation made to the clubs to release their players as well as of the Olympic spirit, Cas calls upon the good will and the good sense of Fifa and the clubs to find a reasonable solution with regard to players who wish to represent their country in the Olympic Games."

Who do you think will win the football at the Olympics?

    RKW

Fifa had ruled on Wednesday that clubs must release players aged 23 or under for the Olympics if a nation requests them.
The world governing body said: "The judge determined that the international match calendar is not of relevance in establishing whether clubs are obliged to release players for the men's Olympic football tournament.
"Taking part in the Olympic Games is a unique opportunity for all athletes of any sporting discipline.
"It would not be justifiable to prevent any player younger than 23 from participating in such an event if his representative team had qualified."
Barcelona want Messi for the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie on 12 August.
But with the Olympic football tournament set to begin on 7 August they would have to make do without their star player.
Messi revealed he understood Barcelona's position but it was a dream for him to play in an Olympic team for Argentina.
AC Milan have already told Brazil that they will not allow Kaka to play in the Olympics, while the Italian club's new signing Ronaldinho and Manchester United's Anderson are both included in Brazil's 18-man Olympic squad.
Real Madrid have asked Brazil to release Robinho from Olympic duty because of a suspected groin injury.
The 24-year-old has more than 50 Brazil caps and is a reported target for Chelsea. Real Madrid revealed their doctors had said Robinho's injury was discovered when he turned up for a medical examination and light training along with most of the club's squad. Robinho revealed: "Unhappily, I can't go with Brazil to the Games but it is Real Madrid's decision and I respect it."

In Messi's case Barcelona hold all the aces really. He's indebted to them for moving him to Spain and paying for his treatment from hormone growth deficiency from the age of 11 so it's not as if he's a footballing mercenary that would leave them over something like a club v country row.

That being said i reckon they'll still let him go they're not really renowned for their uncharitable past as a club, much like our own.

I don't think they'll let him go. They wouldn't have gone to all this trouble just to give in.

They went to all the trouble as a matter of priniciple together with the other 2 clubs. Argentina played hard ball and they refused to waiver, it's still not set in stone they won't let Messi play. If Messi wishes to go, even though he doesn't appear the type to moan, i'm sure they could come to an agreement.
