I grew up in Glasgow. It is a violent city, countless times I've been threatened with knives even needles at one time (yes, I wasn't liked in my area for some unknown reason - wasn't even involved in any gangs or bad people). Couldn't even play football on the local pitch because of the young teams, thinking they own the place. It is not worth arguing with them, they stabbed me in the * and my mate got stabbed on the side of the face. They even got away with it in the courts.

Spent a short time in Johannesburg in South Africa, this place is absolute nuts with all the blacks jumping around shooting people with AK-47s, blowing ATM machines out the walls and robbing cash in transit vans. And the World Cup is going there in 2010? Crazy. People will die. If you decide to attend the 2010 World Cup, I advise you do a lot of research and plan your trip well, believe me this is far from a safe country, end up in the wrong area and you will be raped or killed.

I'm due to move to Beijing and Shanghai very soon (6 months in each city). I will decide which city to stay in the year after. You will rarely see any crime there, a much stronger society. But in China, it is quite common for pick pockets.

I've been jumped once (when I was 11 waiting on a bus from school) and had a knife pulled on me in Glasgow City Centre when I was 15, luckily the * didnt use it and just took my wallet! Im 27 now and not had a sniff of bother since then.

A very good post and I couldn't agree more.

To be honest I would never consider moving back to Scotland to raise my kids there. There are far too many parents who refuse to take responsibility for their kids actions. They are either in complete denial or they simply don't give a *. I'm far from perfect and my youth was one dodge after another but I try my hardest to make sure my kids grow up respecting others, speaking in a nice mannerly way and generally being proud of themselves and treating other people in a humane way. I see a lot of kids over here who are so spoilt it's simply a joke. We were in an ice cream parlour at the weekend and this wee lad, must have been about 9 or 10...starts gobbing off to his old boy that his ice cream was melting and running down his hand. He actually demanded that his old man change it for him. The guy was a complete idiot though, just stood there trying to pacify the boy which was not working. In the end the wee boy launched the ice cream at his old man and hit him right in the guts with it, then he walks over to the freezer and takes out an ice lolly and starts eating it. His old man, like the muppet he is, paid for it and walked out.

I couldn't even imagine one of my kids doing that. They're kids and they act up as every kid does but never like that.

I suppose the point I'm making is that education starts young, really young. If it's neglected then it's simply a slope kids find themselves on and they just slide lower and lower down it to the point where they lose all respect for themselves and everyone else.

Used to employ a young black guy from South Africa, really a lovely guy who was very quiet about what he had seen or went through in S.A. Himself and his family must have seen some tragedy. He kept his past very quiet but what he did tell me was unreal, especialy about his brother.

Anyhow you seem to have seen some agro yourself better luck out in Beijing mate, just watch out for those pesky Tibetan monks.:84:

OK mate didn´t realise 1991 stood for the year of your birth.

A wee bit of advice for you, take it or leave its up to you, but be careful as to the info you give out about yourself online. Obviously your amongst freinds on here but better to be safe than sorry.:50:

I lived in Shanghai for 3 months in 1998 and for a month in 2003. It's one of the best and safest cities I've ever been to. My pal loved it so much he bought a pub there and has lived there since 1999.
You'll love the social life and the food. I want to go back there now. :50:

Mabey thats the type of generalisation or racist remarks that you've made in the past (although you might not have realised it) that have landed you getting stabbed in the * my friend!!:97:

    My Eagle Eyed friend.

First I'm not generalizing, you've just dug up a mistake in what I wrote.

Secondly, yes I don't trust black people, especially in South Africa. It is not racist, remember that naivety kills.

I live in Inverness and we'd always been lead to believe that the two big cities were rough as * and pretty violent. I moved to Edinburgh for 5 years and while I had a few fights in my time down there, I have to say that for the size of the place, the Schneck is a lot rougher. We're fairly lucky, in that knife crime isn't very prevalent (I've had a knife pulled on me once), but in recent weeks a couple of boys that were known to me were stabbed to death. I've been hit with glasses and bottles in pubs up here, but never in a "stabbing" fashion. Generally we have our fair share of scum, but at the same time, EVERY * drinks up here and usually ends up with some form of aggro at the weekend. I've discussed Switzerland before with the original poster and if you haven't been there, you'd be amazed. I've never been to a country where I've felt safer and this is with ZERO police presence. Generally, I reckon socio-economic factors are at the root of many of the problems in Scotland. When people drink excessively, it's usually through boredom or depression. There's never been much of an economy in North, outside of tourism, so we've never had it to be taken away, like the mining towns around the central belt and therefore we don't have that sense of injustice many feel. It's kind of like a bubble up here, cut off from the rest of Scotland by 100-150 miles of hills and heather, where there's nothing to do, but get blazing. Smack is creeping in to most of the smaller towns and it's having an incredibly detrimental effect on communities.

I feel safe, although my town is a rough one, you just have to be assertive, I mean the quality of life here is good, although if you look for trouble you will get it! Also if you associate with scum, trouble will inevitably follow, i imagine its the same in most large towns and cities,

From my window I can see a total of 7 CCTV cameras, we had a murder a few weeks back up stairs, don't think they've caught anyone for it yet. There's usually a street battle of some sort a couple of times a month, but that's not bad actually, there's a lot worse areas to live in Glasgow.

If you are looking for an argument then you are not going to get one.

I find it hard to trust black people, it depends on who they are, for example I would never trust any black on the South African streets. I done this to survive. You don't get involved with them, you wouldn't understand unless you've experienced life there. I didn't create society, society is here for us to live in, and if avoiding blacks is a safe option for me then so be it. Life isn't a bed of roses.

Blacks in the UK, well my view is different. The culture is different here and I do respect any black as the same as any other race by default then it goes from there.

    * sounds like a lot of you guys have it rough.... i live in a decent home on a lake in new jersey.... we used to live in the city but my dad moved us out not too long ago... i have nothing to worry about in terms of street crime.... but like some of you guys have mentioned in the pubs things can always get a bit rough once someone has a few cans in them..... probably moving back to the city not too long from now. just graduated university, and that's where all the work is...

Stay in Hamilton, mate got a bottle smashed over his head about a month ago. Apart from that, i dont notice anything different from any areas, they all have their scumbags, and they all have there decent people. Just have to learn to talk your way out of it when the time comes that something does happen. Or learn to run.

Hamilton seems to have a kinda bad press for some reason as well (Maybe because of the Palace:rolleyes:). Some of the stuff you see is pretty dodgy, but you learn to know where to go and where not to go to avoid trouble. If you want it, you will most likely get an absolute pasting off some ned.

It must be about 40% Africans in these flats and I'd rather live with 200 Africans than 1 Smack Head any day I can promise you that.
